WSJ: "Microsoft Plots Original TV Shows for Xbox"

150 people dedicated to this. That's one AAA studio if we look at a company like Sucker Punch. What would you rather have? Their focus is all over the place.

150 people is nothing compared to the amount of people who will actually film/act/make-up/costume/sfx etc.

I honestly don't see anything wrong with it. If they're finding ways to expand and offer more entertainment on their consoles, what's wrong with it? They delivered the games so far, so if they keep it up while offering multimedia content that I might like, why complain?

Not to mention 150 people hired that have no experience in games development, so at best you would just not have those 150 people...

How? This reminds me of everybody saying their E3 sucked because of TV, TV, TV, TV yet it was all games.

and we've known about this since, what, last year? Add on that Sony focuses on original programming, too, so.
No their initial reveal sucked because TVTVTVTV, their E3 sucked because $500 + DRM + MS Reps looking like douchebags because they were tasked with either defending the company's untenable policies or obfuscating them.

with $499 price tag and $60 subscription, I don't think it's going mainstream.

'All in one entertainment system' effort has bit them in the ass. Either make a cheap Roku-like box, maybe a repackage 360 to offer something a little different than the competition or/and make an affordable next gen gaming console.

Their E3 was fantastic if you're looking at it from a strictly games perspective, which is normally the most important thing.

And price and ownership of your games have nothing to do with that?

They've shown their true intentions last year. Anyone who falls for it again has only themselves to blame.

I got the system and have many games to play. Them wanting to make shows for their own box isn't going to automatically stop games from coming on to the system. I'm very positive that the people that are working on TV content aren't the ones that are actually making games.

We still doing the TVTVTV was at E3 stuff?

Are there any new games coming out for the One?

Completely serious question. I mean in the next few months. What the hell are they doing?

No one is going to pay $500 and $60 a year to watch TV shows....
Yeah it's really confounding that anyone at MS thinks this will sell Xboxes. This is a symptom of a company that does not want to be in the market it is in.

Their e3 didnt suck for gaming content. Phil already hyping this years games showcase, so theres no logical reason for people to default to the typical alarmist "TVTVTV" attitude. Gaming is by far their biggest focus.

Resources are finite. Things have opportunity costs.

I imagine that this is not meant to sell Xboxes per se. It's meant to keep people watching, playing, and potentially making money in advertisement. We'll see how this content is actually distributed, but there are plenty of opportunities for cross-marketing and leveraging other content through TV shows and documentaries.

It'll be interesting to see the pricing structure on this. Hopefully if you have gold it will be included in that, but I'd assume that this will be part of Xbox Video and you'll be able to watch on your computer, phone and tablet as well. Maybe free with gold, and requires a Xbox Video specific subscription without gold?

Resources are finite. Things have opportunity costs.

This most likely isn't just an Xbox thing though. I'd assume this will be for all devices.

They're just focused on tv blah blah blah. Has anyone taken time to notice that the XB1 has quite a few compelling exclusives already? This takes nothing away from their games. It adds value. There is nothing at all negative about this.

Below
D4
Sunset Overdrive

for exclusives until E3. Wouldn't make a lot of sense to announce a lot of games with E3 not too far away. Might as well let the indies and multiplatform games tide people over.

This is precisely why i was cynical about Phil Spencer's recent "games games games" PR.

Early adopters of $500 games consoles don't care about this stuff, and they're also into the hobby enough to see it as wasted resources that could be going into a new studio or game. I don't know if this is some weird attempt at building momentum after their big bet (titanfall) failed to boost sales enough to beat the competition. But it's the wrong way to go about it. This sort of announcement comes when the console is affordable to the mainstream consumer, not when it costs as much as it does.

Sell it to the people who actually have a chance buying the system (gamers looking for games on a $500 games console) and as time goes on, and the system reduces in price they'll get their "TV, TV, TV, SPORTS, TV, TV, SPORTS" audience.

There is absolutely no chance that either Below or Sunset Overdrive come out before E3.

Sunset is the fall and Below i think. We barely know anything on them. I think D4 and project spark might release sooner.

As an early adopter who likes quality tv programming I am thrilled to have original series coming to the Xbox one.

More than likely. And hey, I would be interested in shows/documentaries that are gaming focused and I'm pretty sure others who play games on the console would be too.

I really hope this thing works out. I use my gaming console for literally everything, so more entertainment is a good thing. I'm excited for more things that differentiate these two units. Those that complain about this or hope for this to fail clearly have no skin in this game.

I really hope they fired the PR firm that was writing the dialog for their pre-E3/E3 presentations. It was so goddamn awful. Who writes this shit?

As an early adopter that LOVES quality TV, I'd rather have Microsoft focus on what has actually become their comparative advantage (games), especially since their first party stable of studios still needs a whole lot of investment.

I'll make a personal exception to this -- VERY focused programming geared towards gaming. So, yes, that would include a Halo TV series.

But a program based on Soccer? The one reality show based on skateboarding? Yeah, no.

Again though, the fact that this is Nancy Tellem talking about it and not Phil Spencer seems to indicate that this is a MS Entertainment and Devices thing, not just an Xbox thing. Xbox Video is a part of multiple platforms.

The opportunity cost really depends on where the money is coming from and/or how it's being accounted for. This could be coming out of their advertising budget, for example, in which case it's probably a better use of the money than the NFL deal or pretty much any of the marketing tie-ins with EA aside from TitanFall.

They're working at complete saturation when it comes to public awareness of the product, and don't have many exclusive titles to dump advertising money into in the near future, so it's not like it would be a completely unconscionable use of their ad budget.

As an Xbox One owner I'm pretty excited to see what they come up with.

If they can create a high quality, compelling television show then I don't see the downside. It only adds further value to the box.

I mean, some shows on television right now have created an outright phenomenon in terms of their following so if Microsoft can manage to create a show that's even half as successful as things like Game of Thrones or House of Cards I'm sure they'd consider it a big win.

Seriously. Despite Microsoft constantly saying they're focusing on gaming, they seem to do the exact opposite.
They are just acting like they are for the gamers so they can lure in gamers, once they get those they will switch back to their tv tv shit.

How lucrative is it to confine these original TV shows to 2 platforms?

The Tester was great and I'm sure The Guild had amazing downloads on 360 but it seems a bit risky in the Amazon Prime/Netflix/Redbox Instant/Crackle/Hulu/etc. age to limit programming to a specific platform (with Gold required).

Even the Playstation themed programming seems asinine in the same sense.

Why is it one or the other? That's the thing people can't understand for some reason. Hey if Microsoft is making game series they cancelled every game. No games. No games at all. Its just silly.
