WSJ: "Microsoft Plots Original TV Shows for Xbox"

What the freaking hell? I had to check the date on the first posts because this feels like something that could have been dated from almost exactly this time in 2013. Unfortunately not. Same immediate reactions, too, like "who'll pay for..." and "better come with Gold", includes the Halo and Spielberg name drops. I'll assume others got the same deja vu. So really we're back to press on TV! TV...you know what, screw it.

If they still want to go through with this stuff despite all the flack they got from it the first time and not getting the sales results they wanted versus Sony in the US (to say nothing of globally), let them. If they think this is a wise thing to re-announce after publicly re-committing themselves to "games, games, games", fine. That whole "let the market speak" or whatever. Please tell me this all has a separate budget and it's not taking money away from first-party game development. There'll be extreme backlash (again) if we get TV announcements at E3 or even some kind of accidental hint that games aren't the overwhelming focus. If Sony goes on such a tangent I'd expect the same.

Sad that the Atari landfill thing is just a TV promo gimmick. At least that explains why they're spending money on something so silly.

Porn on consoles is inevitable, specially with VR.

About original TV shows for consoles, I am not sold on the idea, its not necessarily bad but I fail to see how it could be implemented properly, there is Netflix and other services after all so I'm not sure even it is at all necessary.

Expanding the gaming IPs into other medias in a proper way would be great, but so far they failed miserably with movies, no indication that they would be able to do it any better with TV shows.

No. My nephew has X1, it would be funny to see which friends use the app and then call them out

I liked the idea that nobody's going to pay $500 + $60 sub to watch original TV content... but porn, something that practically nobody pays for ever, on any platform, would cause machines to fly off the shelves! :p

That's also, far and away, the most concentrated demographic on the system. It makes complete sense.

I never said it didn't make sense, just that the type of content they're offering didn't appeal to me hence 'uninterested'. Hopefully those 18-34 year olds don't find more varied content on cheaper streaming services.

If the shows are good enough people will come (see Game of Thrones, House of Cards), or they'll pirate the shit out of it, making the buzz around your platform even bigger.

Somehow I doubt a Halo show would be that good though.

Anyone who is really excited for a halo series will probably already own a xbox one. If anything it might keep some halo fans from switching sides o play destiny on ps4. MAybe

Sounds like they're sinking a lot of money on TV shows. And this is at no extra charge to current Gold subscribers? Plus giving away free games and timed exclusive CoD and BF4 DLC.
Are Live subscriptions enough to cover these costs?

Lol, they should make a game show out of it! Offer some prizes or even a cool job in the industry.

Whoa, slow down. We hope that they would at least include this with Gold. But MS being MS there is no guarantee.

Haha. Don't underestimate the money you can make by nerd culture pandering. It's pretty much a cottage industry on Youtube these days.

I doubt they all have an xbox one. I remember people said that when Halo 3 came out and it was not the case.

I got the system and have many games to play. Them wanting to make shows for their own box isn't going to automatically stop games from coming on to the system. I'm very positive that the people that are working on TV content aren't the ones that are actually making games.

Oh my god I'm actually agreeing with Bgamer it must be the end of the world

Whilst true, I think that makes a poor argument at times like these. Going strictly by that, anything else MS ever attempts to do, outside of making Xbox games is a reason to claim they're not focused on games, they lied to us, blah blah blah. If they opened two more studios with the budget allocated to this, then attempt to do this afterwards anyway, the responses would be pretty much identical.

I mean, how should they go about this exactly? Let's just imagine this is a completely separate initiative for a second... complete divorced from Xbox. MS simply wants to make some TV shows ala Netflix. To avoid pissing everyone off, should they start up a separate branch named Microsoft Pictures, then throw their stuff on a service that isn't Xbox Video? Is there anyway Microsoft, a huge company that has many initiatives, is allowed to make a TV show without it being bullshit in the eyes of gamers, that are completely fine with when other companies do something similar?

Exactly. I don't see anything wrong with this. Microsoft is a large company, and I doubt them wanting to produce their own original TV series would impact their game studios/funds in any significant way. As long as something like this is supplemental, I have no problems with it.

Also, slightly OT: But didn't Sony also announce a Netflix-like service at E3 last year? I remember something like that being mentioned, were you would be able to watch Sony-produced movies and TV shows. AND didn't they also say they were going to start producing original programming only for the Playstation(s)?

But Destiny is going to be on Xbox One as well. Those people don't have to go anywhere.

Facts aside, I doubt a TV show is going to keep people from buying a PS4. There's not really a precedent for that.

I don't think that's the immediate goal. It's more of just trying to offer more value for a service. If it succeeds and gets big, then it's another thing that could draw people over to the console. I doubt anyone would buy any system just for a tv show.

To be honest, I have no interest in a Halo show. Halo is a game series. That's about it.

I'm more interested in Remedy's idea for Quantum Break, both TV and game are thought up together to make the whole that is Quantum Break. I think that has more potential to be good.

They did have a 10 minute (or so) segment at E3 talking about media/TV shows and how they wanted the PS4 to be a good box for that. I don't remember anything about original programming for PS4 but shows like "The Tester" didn't stop the PS3 from having solid games.

This will probably be mostly for the streaming player they will release next year. Streamer boxes are hot now so they will release one two years too late like they always do.

Microsoft following what is cool two years too late since 2003.

Not super excited about the TV stuff on either console, I guess its a nice thing to have on top of everything else, but wouldn't make me buy one console over the other... MS has a better game line up announced as of now IMO, so its weird to see people act like the TV stuff is keeping them from making games. I still dont have either new console yet, at this point I am going to wait for E3 and see how things look after, but I really hope very little time is spent on TV by either Sony or MS at E3...

These. They're always late to the party every time other companies think about something great that consumers will love - Apple, Google, Samsung, etc.

It's better for a game hardware company to be late following trends outside of their area for a gaming company to be late following trends inside.

Sony already beat them to the punch with the awsome reality show they call Playroom. Tits and Ass wins everytime.

Exactly. Not everything has to be seen from the viewpoint of console wars. They're trying to add a great deal more value to their services. While it may have xbox implications, this clearly goes well beyond just Xbox. They're trying to establish a popular service that people will want to subscribe to for reasons beyond just gaming. And, in doing so, they hope in time their efforts will be seen as just one of a couple very good reasons for why people value being subscribers to said services. Shit, I have no complaints, as it doesn't appear to be distracting them from taking games seriously, and I also genuinely hope something worthwhile comes out of their efforts. I have high hopes for the Halo show, for example.

Then let me rephrase. No one is going to buy a game console to watch exclusive TV shows.
This is a bonus to people who already own one, but it won't be a deciding factor for people to shell out money they wouldn't have otherwise. It seems really pointless as an XBox only thing.

But aren't Netflix and amazon both doing it? Surely most people won't have both subs there either? Not to mention those services signing up other exclusive content.

That's very frustrating as a simple consumer that would like to just watch TV on my streaming service without worrying about which service to subscribe to, or which app to launch.

Nobody thought Netflix was gonna make anything of value and look at them now, they have House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. Good move by MS. Non-broadcast TV is big right now. They just need to make sure they make it more like cable tv and less like mainstream broadcast TV and it could be huge.

Exactly. And posters here still think that Microsoft is going to focus on games from now on?

That's why I didn't get my hopes up.

Exactly. They fell for Phil's PR hype.
Is there a problem focusing on more than one thing?

MS is a big company, they have enough resources to do more than one thing at a time...

Seriously. Despite Microsoft constantly saying they're focusing on gaming, they seem to do the exact opposite.
Yes hiring a completely seperate team for this means they are going to mainly focus on TV. The game studios they own are going nowhere so this is just an added bonus.

Sony had The Tester and Qore shows for years. Nintendo even did some weekly show on the Wii about upcoming games (that was cringeworthy due to the actors).

I doubt this TV studio group means that they take away money they were going to allocate to games. Some corporate executive set aside money for all this stuff a long time ago most likely. It isn't "crap we need more money for TV shows, lets just cancel some games!"

tl:dr You can make TV shows and make Games.

I never cared for the story of Halo. The Atari thing does sound interesting though. I got the system for the games but I won't get mad at new bonuses just because they aren't my favorite. It would be like people getting pissed at Sony for Virtual Reality goggles because they don't like VR.

On Podcast unlocked one of the guys on that (Ryan?) said he saw stuff for it last week and the embargo ends on Monday, said it was Netflix like I think but not 100% sure on context.

If they give program to XBL Gold members for free that would be pretty good (and in every region) and you know, I might actually watch some of it then

No, but if they happened to already have the box and the sub they might watch it (and its free) plus it might be on 360 I guess? Which isn't $500

Why would it ever be free? A brand new media service that costs billions to produce and MS, of all companies, will be charitable with its distribution?

Mmkay.
