Capy’s mysterious Xbox One adventure 'Below' emerges from the shadows

Microsoft, dogged by bad press and with a self-publishing initiative to promote, might have liked you to know a bit more about Below by now. You sense the Xbox One maker could have done with Capybara Games being more vocal about its mysterious new adventure, which has been confined almost entirely to the shadows since it was unveiled on Microsoft’s stage at E3 2013. This shroud of secrecy suits the game’s theme, but it has other, more practical advantages, as Capy co-founder and president Nathan Vella explains.

“It’s given us the chance to focus directly on the game,” he says, “to not have to spend tons of time building it up for demos, for promotion, then paring it down immediately [and] starting all over again. Promotion, marketing, PR: they take a lot of time away from actually making the game. So having these last nine months or so to really work on the game has meant that it’s come a long way since we first showed anything.”

Below is a project with plenty of challenges – no surprise, given Capy seems to set out to do something totally different with each new game. Yet what might seem to be the biggest of all, working with Microsoft, has been anything but. Indeed, the platform holder sanctioned Below’s shift from Microsoft Game Studios to the ID@Xbox initiative, letting Capy not only self-publish the game but also freeing the studio up to bring it to other platforms, such as Steam. Vella thinks it says much about Microsoft’s attitude.

“Microsoft catches a lot of shit – some of it deserved, some not – but they understand our goals,” he says. “They understand the goals of the game and of the company, instead of trying to shove us in a direction that would benefit them a little more and us a little less. [This is] the best-case scenario for both the project and the studio. It represents a positive shift in big publishers [and] companies understanding the way that independent developers develop games.”

Sounds great. Looks beautiful too.

This is the one coming to Steam, right? I'd like to play it, but don't want to buy an X1 just to play it

Yes, it seems to be timed exclusive or something but the games press keeps omitting that fact.

They compared it to dark souls, I know most will like that, but I'm not one. Sounds like a hard game to beat.

It is illegal to have a preview of a game in 2014 without comparing it to either Dark Souls or calling it a rogue like.

This was the game that I was most impressed with at E3, for better or for worse, and that hype still lives on

Grabbing this on PC when it releases. I really love the look and feel of the game so far. Glad to see an update to one of my more anticipated indie games of the year.

I know MS gets a lot of crap in regards to indies, and parity clause (for good reason), but I really like the fact that they let Capy move from being published by them, to being self published through ID@Xbox so they could release elsewhere, even though they already had an agreement in place. That's pretty cool of them to do.

And ya, I played the game at PAX East for about 20 minutes. It's real easy to die and you get set back a ways. The game itself is GORGEOUS, I was really left with a smile on my face the whole time. 20 minutes felt like 2 in that regard.

Waited for 3 hrs in line to play it at pax (at one point Randy Pitchford cut in front of us).

We only got 15 min to play it. It was interesting, there was a point I was bleeding out. I set a cauldron type thing on fire, put the sword in it and the characters cauterized the wound. I died alot, but the exploration was interesting, when you enter a room it's dark "fog of war" style that lifts as you walk around revealing the area. Closest thing I can compare it to is the first time playing Zelda 1, where you have no clue what to do or where to go, with a pinch of darksouls. I can't wait to play more of it, shame i'll need to get a xbone since the mac version won't be till much later.

Concerning the Dark Souls comparisons, if you're not careful with enemy encounters you will be killed easily, but it only throws you back a few screens to a checkpoint. I'm not sure it you lose items or equipment due to only having a short time to play it. But its resemblance to roguelikes is first and foremost.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Artstyle isn't doing anything for me... I still reckon Capy's best looking game was their Might and Magic on DS (not the remake for XBLA).

Loved playing this at PAX East and can't wait for it to come home. And to echo everyone else, yes this is coming to PC (Steam) and other platforms after the timed exclusive clause wears off.

When you die your items drop with your corpse, though the rooms are randomized there's a chance you'll come across the same room after you revive and can get your stuff back.
