That is the direction the Dark Souls series went in.

Sony possibly approached From with Demon Souls 2, but From probably countered with something that would be mutually beneficial to both parties and the ability to distinguish itself from the current Souls franchise.

I've never played a souls game. What is the big deal about them? Why do people go crazy over them?

I can tell you why i love the series: It's a hardcore, dark fantasy action RPG. It's about gameplay mechanics and good designed levels. There isn´t games like this out there. At least, not anymore.
