Wolfenstein: TNO is unplayable without patch [Bethesda denies; See OP]

So basically physical discs are just a formality now.

"Hey boss, the game doesn't work yet."

"We'll patch it later, press the discs and ship 'em out to these suckers."

EDIT: Eh, I didn't use the right word when I said formality did I?

As I pointed out in another thread, these kind of practices should be boycotted. Selling an incomplete disc is anti-consumer and unacceptable. They might as well just place it as DD only if this is the solution they come up with.
Why should I boycott it if it doesn't affect me personally? I'm aware of it and have the bandwidth

I mean, come on, I understand why this is bullshit and feel for those without internet, but I would never go so far as to boycott

If this becomes a norm in the future what would really be great of both console manufacturers is allowing the end user to download the patch ahead of time.

What I mean is I often purchase games from my laptop while at work and they are waiting for me when I get home. Why can't we queue up patches?

I guess the one argument would be patches are only delivered when they are required, but hey if someone is going to queue up a patch without purchasing the game, they may not be the brightest bulb in the bunch to begin with.

The day Wolfenstein is released I am going to go pick it up from Best Buy on my lunch break at work. Also turns out I have a dinner to go to right after work, and I will not get home until 9 PM or so. Depending on how long this patch takes to download once I insert the disk, I very well may not be able to check out the game that night as I usually go to sleep around 11 PM on a work night. IF I could download the patch ahead of time, that would go a long way to me being able to play the game sooner when I get home.

I suppose people will say then order the digital version. Until digital versions come with $20 credit like the retail version did from BestBuy, that is simply just not an option for myself. I go where the best deal is and where I either save or get money back.

I'm lucky enough not to have a bandwidth cap, but I feel for those that do.

It's not even about the bandwidth cap I feel sorry millions of people that haven't connected their console to the internet for whatever reason. Considering this is a single player game and will be potentially buying a worthless disk.

This is insane if true. That patch must have some pretty huge things in it.
As mentioned in the other thread, I think it just comes with the territory on iDTech 5, because Megatextures.

Yup, unacceptable. If you buy a disc from Wal-mart and come home and stick it in your PS4, it should work without an internet connection no questions asked.

What would really be great is if both console manufacturers wouldn't even certify such a thing, as others have said.

Pretty much.

The game looks really, really fun to me so why would i boycott it because some people can't play it due to shitty internet?

Surely there is a way around this, reviewers played it fine after all :/

So why not have that code as a base on the disc? You can't just demand an online connection for a single player experience.

But what if you don't have your console connected online at all, or have no internet for the time being? What happens? This is what I want to know. It may just be he got prompted to a huge update because he is connected online..Just assuming here.

Obviously this isn't the case, or else people wouldn't be complaining.
I'm assuming the game is literally won't let you play until you download the update.

Beyond the not having internet problem, if this turns out to be true you're not buying a game on disc, you're buying a key to a patch server that may or may not exist in the future. It's kind of like buying digitally, except we know even less about how long those servers are handled long term.

Wow!! Thats ridiculous! Thank god I see nothing interesting on that game and will not buy it anyway. But thats so unfair with their consumers!! Cant even understand how it was able to pass the certification thing.

Its just sad how the videogame industry, as they grow, they stop giving any shit for their costumers. Thats enough already!

Are you serious? This self-important attitude is more damaging to the industry than any other. This goes beyond a mere online issue, we're talking about an incomplete product being sold at full price. How can you not see this as a problem?

Not really a problem for me. But I have a lot of friends overseas and deployed without internet 24/7.

Just what this game needed. Some stupid fucking controversy to pop up the week before release

I'm not too happy about having to wait until like 4 hours after I first put the disc in (since I'm leaving on a weeklong vacation that evening and wanted to put some hours in), but now this shit will sour a lot of people. Understandably so, but it's disappointing because the game looks super promising.

Wow, is this the first time this has happened? It's pretty bonkers. I really hope this doesn't become a trend..

If there's too much for one disk, they're just going to have to bite the bullet and make it two disks. It doesn't make sense not to. Especially with a single player game.

Ah, okay. So how big is this game uncompressed?

No one knows, the thing is, most of the game data (textures, audio) nowadays is stored in compressed form even when installed and used by the game. Example, MP3s for background music, MP3 is already compressed and you can't compress it much further (not sure if this game uses MP3 audio, just an example) and they're decoded by the game engine as-is.

Surely the game has to at least work with just what is on the retail disc? Does unplayable in this instance mean that it just has a terrible framerate/popin or does it literally mean that you can't even get the game to start up? I mean, both are terrible and completely unacceptable but the latter is definitely much worse. I can't see how they can even legally sell a physical copy of a game if it doesn't work at all. That would be like selling a bluray of a movie that doesn't let you get past the title screen...

I have no interest in this game but if I did I'm pretty sure this news would kill it.This is such a shitty thing to do.

So when the fuck are they going to allow predownloading for this on the PS4 like 1.70 allows? Or am I now going to have to download almost 60gb on Tuesday? This is getting annoying.

You have to have connected the xbox one at some point by now as the machine wouldn't work otherwise. Still a shitty move but I'm going to wait for confirmation before hanging them out to dry.

It will affect you once the next generation of consoles is well underway and they shut down access for the old DLC.

Every time a story like this comes out it just further convinces me that PC will be the way to go when I finally feel like getting in on the current generation. Way easier to work around this crap on an open platform.

They have such a promising game at hand. How could they f*** this up? If this would be a MP only game, ok. But a sole SP game which needs a patch to work???

Any other impressions from people who have the game early and are not connected?

Going to wait till this is confirmed but the people who decided this had to know that this would give them a big shitstorm.

That's not self important. That's just wanting to buy a videogame I like the look of. I'm not obligated to boycott just because someone else can't play it.

And if you read my post, you'll see I acknowledged the problem. At the end of the day, this problem doesn't affect me, so why should I go any further than that? It sucks for them, but I'm glad I can play it

They never said it wasn't a problem. But its a problem that doesn't affect them, so they're not going to miss out on a game they want because of it.

Seems reasonable.

Lol if true far too late for a Hashtag. I suppose that what stinks so much they mentioned this when it was far too late or rather didn't mention it at all.

This is also out on last gen consoles you realise?

I can't believe some people don't care because they aren't affected. It's about consumer-rights. We need to stop them right here or they will find even worse ideas in the future to fuck the consumer. And then even the ones who don't care today are going to be affected.

Pretty sure this is grounds for a lawsuit? You're intentionally selling an as-is defective product with no warning of such either in advertising or with the product itself.

I worked at game when half life 2 came out we had to tell anybody that bought it that it required online activation I guess this is like that.
