Would anyone else like a "Tales of" Zelda?

I've never been interested in the Zelda mythology so this holds zero appeal to me. Plus, part of the appeal of Tales games is getting to know a new cast of characters and the world they inhabit.

I love this idea of crossing over Nintendo properties with new gameplay styles. Pokemon Conquest, Hyrule Warrios (in theory). Even the ones that didn't work (Metroid: Other M) I thought were worthy of experimentation, because hell, that's how we got Metroid Prime.

I'm all for it. Start mixing and matching. A couple duds is worth the good games we'll probably get out of it

I'd rather have a Xenoblade-like Zelda to be honest.
Playing Xenoblade now and I really like it.
But there's no puzzle solving to speak of which wouldn't fly for Zelda. If you're just taking about the realllly big maps of Xenoblade,
Then sure.
But that'd be about all I wanted from Xenoblade in a Zelda. Dunno why that's become a thing lately.

How would filling out a party be an issue btw? The Mario RPGs make up characters and species for every single game. Why couldn't Zelda?

Well, A Link to the Past was originally going to have a party system.

Miyamoto: “Ever since I started making the first game in the series, I’ve been saying that the third Zelda will feature a party, one that consists of the protagonist, who’s a mix between an elf and a fighter, a magic user, and a girl. The fairy that appeared in Adventure of Link was actually a party member designed for Zelda 3.”

"A girl who looked a little like a fairy and whose role consisted of reconnaissance. Like the characters in action games that don’t engage enemies in combat but rather go and scout out the surroundings and return to you safely. It’s also fun when action adventure games lets you choose who to send out. That’s the sort of thing I’m thinking I’d like to put in Zelda 3.”

Not sure if he could pull off the 'HYAAAAA"'s perfectly.

Of course I'd like Link to talk, I'm probably one of the few who'd probably want to see that in a Zelda game. Don't get me wrong, I like it the way it is. I'd just like to see one Nintendo iteration of Link talk. That's not the cartoon or the Philips games.
And its actually because of the "HYYAAAAAA" I think he would be a good choice. ;)

If we're defining this as "Action RPG with Zelda conventions and Tales series combat", I'm down for this.

Anything else is just eww.

That sounds a lot like Mother. Only a few characters that are good at a certain thing. Imagine Zelda's future if this happened.

That would literally be the ultimate letdown for me, gaming related. I already find it very hard (c.q. boring) to get into turn based games, but furthermore I just loathe the JRPG genre in general. I don't like the traditional Japanese games.

But Tales isn't turn based...?

I have no idea why you'd want that, but as long as it's not taking away from Nintendo's development resources I don't care if they do it.

Tales isn't turnbased. It has random battles, but each fight is like a mini-session of a 2d fighting game. You move back and forth and jump and attack in realtime. Maybe it's not actually 2d and you can also sidestep? I can't remember, it's been awhile.

Tales recent games aren't turn-based tho. I don't think they've ever been turn-based.

I don't think anyone considers the Mario RPGs to be "mainline" Mario games, don't see why it would be any different for Zelda.

I think it could be interesting.

I took as they wanted it to be the next Zelda game. That's just me assuming, so if thats not what was meant, then so be it. I still wouldn't play it as I don't like the Tales of ... series.

A Fire Emblem/Zelda would be better. Your unit would be Link and he wouldn't be able to talk. But you can change the gender of your unit so yeah.

While they seem willing to lend the Legend of Zelda mythos to B-series crossovers, I can't imagine a Tales spin-off being high on the agenda.

What I would like is the Tales of Ganondorf.

Have him rising up, building an army, conquering towns and cities, solving dungeons and fighting his arch-nemesis - Link.

If Nintendo can do it with Wario, why can't they do it with Ganon? Get Platinum Games on this shit, now.

No.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Zelda brand has insane potential and it could be used for so many amazing things. Offering reskined versions of other franchises isn't the way to go.

If Nintendo wants a JRPG based on the Zelda universe here's what they can do:

1. Create a spin-off called "Hyrule Historia" or something and try to establish an all-new AAA brand.
2. Keep the key elements from the Zelda lore.
3. Hire Sakaguchi or Matsuno (or both) and put them in charge of the IP.
4. Give them a proper budget, full creative freedom, and tell them to make a new large-scale RPG.

Nintendo can diversify their portfolio by establishing all-new AAA IPs based on their current brands, they don't need reskined versions of Tales and Dynasty Warriors.

Mario RPG wouldnt have held up over hundreds of skits
Aren't skits just when the faces come and they talk?

...so it's just dialogue right? Paper Mario has plenty of dialogue. People say Super Paper Mario has too much dialogue. Am I missing something special about "skits" particularly?

LoZ should stay as a LoZ-style series. It's one of those franchises that doesn't need any lame spinoffs. Except Tingle.

The only redeeming quality of the Tales series is it's battle system, so sure, I could get in on that.

Get rid of the characters that are clearly aimed at fedoracore man children and you'll have a nice entry in to the series.

I think all of the newer one's except the Vita remakes don't even have random battles. You can see all the enemies on the map and a vast majority of them can be avoided if you wish. Of course it'll make the forced battles harder if you do that but I'm playing Xillia on the highest level you can through my first play through cause leveling up the shops and killing enough enemies for that made it far to easy and even then the only enemies that really give me any trouble are the devil beasts.

I love Tales of Vesperia and all, but fuck no. Zelda's gameplay is more unique and interesting than anything Tales has ever produced.

It would be the first Zelda game with great combat, wouldn't it? I'm in.

Hm. The thing about Zelda is that the combat, puzzle solving, and exploration generally compliment one another. They're not really about having phenomenal combat; for me it's more of a means to an end. Skyward Sword tried to further define the combat in Zelda by making the combat itself, rather the actual enemies sort of like puzzles as in some of the enemies had certain tactical weaknesses that asked you to approach them in specific ways using the Motion Plus. I don't know that it was completely successful, but I thought it was fun, interesting, and did keep me on my toes a bit.

But I think it had the right idea. I don't think Zelda needs to be awesome combat central, but I think it could experiment with the kind of ideals that Skyward Sword did. Instead of adopting or copying other styles of combat out there it should take the Zelda staples and inject those into the combat.

As much as I love Zeldas stories and characters, I don't think the series has a big enough cast of characters to support a tales-like game, and any characters made specifically to do so would potentially not feel very Zelda-like.

The battle system yes, but that's all they should carry over. I'd like to see a Zelda RPG, after all it worked for Mario.
