Meh, this game continues to looks boring gameplay wise to me. This was bassically just a video of a guy in cover behind the same pillar for 2 minutes, shooting generic fodder enemies who kept running out on balconies a few at a time. And good lord at the enemies just standing and starring during the segment where gallahad is dragging the guy inside while shooting with one arm

Whenever I watch these early gameplay videos I'm trying to get a sense of what I'll be doing - as the player - and the kind of choices I'll make, either from moment to moment or as part of a longer term strategy.

In this video, with me as the player, I watch a cut-scene which then puts me into a firefight on street level. Cover to the left with allied AI using it, cover to the right with allied AI, and cover forward in the street with another allied AI using it. I guess I'd use the big ole empty cover in the middle for this firefight then.

Now, I'm behind cover, what are my choices? There doesn't seem to be any real need to advance as the enemies are all at height, and no reason to look for alternative cover spots for angles or defensive moves since nothing the enemy is doing looks to affect me here. So my choices are really in which order to take the enemy positions down in.

Once that's done the game literally asks you to fire your special weapon attack into the building's second floor so you can see a canned explosion and advance the checkpoint forward.

Then policeman guy gets downed and you're asked to attend to him. You get to move up and hit triangle, at which point you're now stuck on rails while a line of enemies will walk on to a rooftop in the open and fire on you at point blank range with their pistols. The choice here is the same, to prioritize who to shoot, only now you've got no cover to work with.

Once you take down those enemies in whatever order since they're all the same, you get another cut-scene and the story moves forward.

So, as a showcase of visuals, this video is fine. As a showcase for gameplay, nothing that's come out for this game looks engaging in the slightest. No interesting choices to be made whatsoever.

If there's a fun game in there, I'd love to see it at some point.

sums it up nicely

i really dislike how they've been promoting this game so far

My guess is that they arent going to blow their load on a crappy teaser stream. Wait till E3 for it to deliver the goods.

That said, it does look like another 3rd person shooter, which isnt necessarily bad if its done the right way.

My guess is that the people already throwing stones were the same people who saw the couple min demo of Last of Us and called it "Uncharted with Zombies"...people need to not pass judgement so fast and wait for something closer to the final product.

I... didn't like it?

It uncannily looks like Gears, right down to the shoot-with-one-hand-while-slowly-moving-something-with-an-AI-partner bit. I think the reticle in that sequence is even similar to that of the gun you're forced to use in Gears during that sequence. And the first part of the footage is him circling a pillar, shooting at rooftops without the enemy really forcing you to switch positions that you'd even find on lower difficulty Gears levels. The sparks looked a bit overdone, except for that explosion in the building.

Hopefully the next time we see the game, it's a bit more compelling. Still excited though, I'd stomach the gameplay for that setting and narrative. They haven't been shy about the narrative focus either.

Also, did anyone else really think that that one box on the floor looked out of place in the first part of the video? Missing shadows or something.

If it weren't for the unique setting, I'd almost think this is a parody.

It's...almost like it's designed to incorporate everything I dislike about 'AAA blockbusters' with surgical precision:

-Third-person cover based shooting that doesn't appear to offer a single remotely creative aspect.

-An obsession with emulating a 'cinematic' presentation, despite having what looks to be, at best, a superficial appreciation for that medium. Drab dialogue, dodgy acting, and a scope aspect ratio just 'cause.

Edit: - Oh, and blatant scripted-as-fuck set-pieces.

We gave the game the benefit of the doubt when it was first shown. After all, that gave us, at most, fifteen seconds of actual gameplay. Here, we get a whole three minutes, and not a single compelling moment throughout the whole thing.

Surely we'd get something, anything that sets the game apart from others of its ilk? I find it hard to believe the marketers for this game think it wise to give the game a public showing twice without showing some unique feature to set it apart from the crowd, assuming such a thing exists.

Either they're sitting on some great gameplay features to blow us away with at E3, or this game is as creatively bankrupt as all the media released to-date paints it.

*looks at trailer* Yup. That's definitely a trailer. Nothing especially new to see here--my hype level is about the same (REALLY HIGH) so someone let me know when I can pick this up in 2015.

Going through previous pages, it's funny to see the usual suspects play down this, in the same way the Driveclub threads get battered with bollocks...

Maybe, I think Xbox and PC fans really like to follow Sony Games because lacking on their side.
PC fans are generally the most annoying fans out of all 4 platforms, even handhelds and mobile if we take them into account. You can't have a topic anywhere in real life or on the web without them pulling out their metaphorical cock to tell everyone how a game on their 2K rig looks better and 30fps is terrible on everything. Their need for self-assurance is annoying, embarrassing and hilarious all in one. Add Game of Thrones book readers, and you pretty much have the most annoying fanbases on the internet.

Yes, I realize I'm generalizing and there's exceptions to every group

CVG says they got a hands on of the portion of the game covered in the video we saw today. Game Informer had already written a whole article covering that portion of the game in their November issue last year. So I'm worried that we won't learn anything new. Was hoping the press preview last week was a completely new segment that hasn't been talked about before. Doesn't seem to be the case.

Oh wow so this is what they're actually showcasing to journos (and I imagine submitting as part of E3 judging or whatever)?

Yeah. E3 judges week.

Agreed. Releasing an HQ version of this isn't going to address much of the criticism, which mostly has nothing to do with the visuals. Whatever we get on Tuesday is going to be more interesting to watch/read.

I don't think we need a better clip, nobody's denying the game is gorgeous. What we need is a clear representation of what this game is about. If there's more to it than shooting werewolves, Sony has to show it or the "it's a basic TPS/Gears clone" claims will remain until release date.

I know but I would personally like a much higher quality video than the ones we have. Youtube destroys all PS4/XBone/PC footage as this generations biggest leap for me is image quality.

What are we getting on Tuesday, more footage ?.

Holy shit what a post. Well done sir.

Nope, whenever they make a R&C on PS4 they will still be awful.

I don't want to derail the thread with Insomniac talk.

They used to be really good, but they went downhill considerably the last number of years.

They are not the same studio they started out on PS3 with.

The original trailer screamed "Left 4 Dead in third person but in a alternate reality with more supernatural aspects." Even if the team behind the game wasn't making that game, that's what the original trailer felt like. And really, that's what the game should've been.

Gears of War fans are now a thing, I love Gears 1 and 3, if Gears 4 looks amazing gameplay wise I'm probably siding with the Xbone. The Order was the perfect chance for Sony to take some of that fanbase. Heavily stylized co-op shooter with broken up levels like L4D, with Gears gunplay and movement, multiplayer of human vs human on contained maps, human vs monster where real people could play as a werewolf or some supernatural being on the co-op campaign levels.

What's actually being shown is so straightforward. Max Payne 3 was a simple game, but the gunplay, enemy AI, and overall difficulty keep that game interesting.

graphics are amazing, gameplay looks pretty standard though

and is it just me, or is this the second The Order gameplay video that looks like the framerate is...less than amazing?

I know this post has been quoted multiple times already, but still needs to be quoted again. Very well written, and clearly brings out the main gripe people have regarding the gameplay section.

Chamber

love on your sleeve
I don't know Chamber, I feel like type of discussion should matter. May be RAD should not be happy with people just talking about their game, but worry about what is being discussed.

I don't think Sony/RAD have shown us enough of the game for them to be concerned about our reaction to it. The only real reason to put out teaser trailers is to get the product's name out there. A tepid reaction to a full preview might be more cause for concern but even then, I'm not sure how much that means in the real world. Watch Dogs is still going to sell by the truckload regardless of how many pages we spend talking about E3 2012 bullshots.

As someone who's been cautiously optimistic, that was not a great showcase. It's like someone decided to randomly start streaming any player they could find at some random spot in the game with no build up, and called it a day. I don't understand the marketing for this game. They seem hellbent on making come off as underwhelming so far. If you're being tight lipped about a project , I'd think that every piece of footage that does come out would be the best possible vertical slice, not some random b-roll.

I've been on gaf for quite a while, this is not a new thing. I actually enjoy reading the hyperbole, and seeing how others either support or try to tear it apart.

Also, the stream portion is just something new. Sure, streaming quality wasn't fantastic since it's not a perfect technology, but there's plenty of time to release full high quality videos down the road. We can also start focusing on the aspects many gaffers in this thread have asked to know more about, and try to answer those questions and inquiries as best as we can.

So keep with the chatter, I always try to read all of it.
Awesome.

Full press event on this game, embargo ends Tues morning, so we should have better and longer video previews.

I can't imagine why Ready at Dawn would team-up with Sony again. I would tell them to piss off for letting us work on PSP spin offs. If it turns out that the top dogs of RaD have been working on a generic Gears Of War clone the whole time I'll be pissed.

It would also make me even more dissapointed about the fact that this is Sony's big fall game. Eventhough The Order nails the core TPS gameplay it is bland, unimaginetive and repetitive to a fault. Not even near worth all the praise. If it turns out that RaD is focusing most of it's resources on this game as an exclusive for this fall it means that Sony is nothing more than desperate to keep up with the competition.

If Sony let RaD pull something as stupid as this on purpose I'm completely done with them. I'm not going to buy a PS4 because of them. If they do this I'm going to boycott every single one of their products. I won't support them even if I happened to buy a PS4 at some point.

Are you an expert?

So while mgs4 is 50% cutscene

this looks to be 100%

Objectively false and you clearly have no idea how to calculate percentages.

Strange handling of this game so far but it's not like the real media push for this game has started. We know it's coming, we know it's a looker, but there is definitely something missing from what we've seen so far: and that's some kind of unique selling point. I hope to see it at E3. I'm not especially worried that we haven't seen it so far because we've genuinely seen about 3 minutes of gameplay and a bit of cutscene.

I hope they get it right, I really like the setting of this game.

My feelings as well. They haven't done a great job marketing this game in the slightest. RAD doesn't have the well-known AAA pedigree to coast on a single trailer and scarce gameplay footage teasers. If they're really trying to carve out something unique for themselves, they need to starting bringing that out.

If there's supernatural enemies or elements in this game, why would you purposefully cover that up in these gameplay videos? You don't have to show monsters in full daylight or anything; just hinting at it would do. The two gameplay videos they put out were of soldiers fighting resistance soldiers. It feels like the marketing department is going out their way to be super coy with this stuff, but all it's doing is have people judging the whole game on the things they show.

Yeah... Now I get what you're saying and he's definitely aiming and shooting around them, but it does seem like a recoil heavy gun.

And it could have something to do with the player for that clip wanting to show off a spread of thermite ammo igniting rather than an explosion if all that ammo were in one spot when it ignited. I took the "spraying" to be for the benefit of showing off the weapon/ammo and not indicative of how they HAD to shoot... I could be wrong though, maybe heavy sway is built into it under the guise of it being... well... heavy, thus causing the thermite ignitions to naturally result of a larger area of fire rather than a focused explosion. We'll hopefully see more and have some clarification on on Tuesday.

At this point, I consider this game a rental. Visual appeal aside, nothing about this game is getting my juices flowing. From what I've read there are no additional modes of gameplay, so unless the story ends up being absolutely incredible, I can't see me throwing down $60 for this game.

I really hope I'm wrong and we start getting some glowing feedback from the hand on impressions.

The "generic" complaints make sense because so far the only major defining features of this game that set it apart from standard TPS gameplay tropes are its good graphics, unique setting, and... a QTE melee system.

Modern Resident Evil's "thing" is focus on co-op, score attack modes, weapon purchases and upgrades, and the stun->melee combat loop.
Dead Space has dismemberment and antigravity and upgrades.
Gears popularized and modernized the cover system as well as set the standard for competitive TPS multiplayer.
Mass Effect has class based upgrades, unlocks, and different powers based on class.
Uncharted has platforming and hand-to-hand melee combat.
Tomb Raider has... I dunno, platforming I guess. (not the best example, and I'm sure many would actually agree)
Sunset Overdrive has fast acrobatic traversal, superpowers and wacky weapons, and fighting hordes of enemies.
The Last of Us incorporates stealth and survival mechanics.

The Order has mustaches and letterboxing and really good looking leather and metal.

I'm sure that RAD has some hook in there that they want to show off, but they haven't yet.

It definitely looks generic but the term itself is almost utterly meaningless. For example, RE has "coop, score attack modes, weapon upgrades etc" but doesn't particularity play well and its not that fun (espc 5-6). Dead space has "dismemberment and antigravity" but gets stale really quick. Gears "modernized the cover system, etc" but is clunky, has poor ai and generally ugly game.

In other words, you can be generic and still be the best in your genre. Not that this will be of course, but what it does different doesn't mean as much as what it does best.

Not that you would disagree with anything I said but your post implies you need something different, when personally I just need something well made.

Oh, so it's some form of virtual playtest.

Everything has probably been said so I won't write much.

It looks like a nice little showpiece. "Show" being the main thing to takeaway from it. It's not out yet but I really wish they had more then just SP. Maybe there will be a new game plus, but that is only as fun as the gameplay itself. That's why sidenote, things like TLOU appealed to me alot because the gameplay was unique enough to want to run through again. Maybe Order's will be as well but they haven't shown it in these trailers.

It feels like a nice presentation but basically soulless.
