Halo 2 and 3 multiplayer (never played 4 and forgot how Reach was) was great for two reasons:
1. Rankings determined by wins/losses
2. No unlockable gear/weapons/perks
3. No worrying over K/D ratios
It was fantastic always being matched with players of equivalent talent. COD-style blowouts (ex. 75-25 on team deathmatch) just didn't happen very often as I remember it.
since advancing in rank was ONLY based on winning, it forced people to communicate if they wanted to progress
