Halo 2 led the death of competitive Halo gameplay and those numbers spearheaded Bungie's cause right into Halo 3. Reach was the beginning of the end and Halo 4 was the mistake that a new studio needed to make in order to redeem this franchise from imminent doom.

"Shhhhh, you're the vocal minority, millions are enjoying Halo 2 so obviously you're wrong about this because numbers > you." The unfortunate reality of how many people felt back then in a sea of new fans after Halo 2 released. As for the bolded, Bungie should have been listening to the fans they seemed to enjoy "fighting" with.

Nowadays we're seeing the benefit of listening to your most hardcore, dedicated fanbase from other developers; the people who put UNGODLY hours into something you created might be worth listening to when developing a sequel IMO.

Yep. It seemed to me that the more popular Halo 2 got, the more Bungie showed their hubris. The disconnect with their core player base became obvious, and their "we know best" attitude got more and more apparent as the years went on and into their next games.

Take bloom and Halo: Reach for example. Despite it being demonstrably bad for competitive gameplay and many players asking for it to be addressed, Bungie refused to budge. They claimed it was "not possible" to disable it and that it was baked too deeply into the game, but anyone with a map editor or a 360 dev kit linked up for realtime memory access could show you that it wasn't true. It wasn't until 343i came along that we were even given the option to play without it.

This has to be some strange form of Stockholm syndrome, there is just no other explanation for this.
We were just fortunate Halo 2 had excellent maps in that time. Imagine if we were stuck with Halo 3 or Halo 4 quality. Instead of dozens of great map and gametype combos, we'll be lucky if you can find five good ones. You'll be stuck playing AR starts in Construct, or Construct in general, or Snowbound, Epitaph, or Oddball on The Pit. If there was voting in Halo 2, we would have played Midship and Lockout all the time. Granted I loved those maps and yeah they were great, but they had a lot of other great ones in the game.

So if I want to stand a chance against the god weapon, I need a power weapon. Got ya.

A good player should have to earn the good weapons. You may as well be playing Team Rockets.

No one likes spawning with a shitty weapon. It's not fun and it's not good for gameplay.

I was hoping for no voting. Another thing from Reach that should FOD. Veto sucked too but at least the end result was still random

just run the playlist (H1-H4 or Blended) and you get what you get

playing the same maps or game modes is infuriating... Halo 2 did it best

Amen. We should be friends.

Bungie had a major disconnect with a lot of the community and how the game was actually played.

They stubbornly insisted for years that the SMG was an appropriate and balanced starting weapon on all maps (it wasn't). They claimed they were prepared for modding on disc maps and had it covered (they didn't). They insisted that modding and standbying were rare and not major issues (they were). The claimed the ranking system was unfair and that Halo 3's system was an improvement (it wasn't). And, as anyone who played against them online will testify, none of them were particularly good at their own game.

So let's not act like some snarky quip, more specifically a snarky quip added to the game just a few months before original Xbox Live support was pulled, is infallible.

Wait, you didn't enjoy starting off with an SMG on Coagulation and Waterworks with Snipers and BRs pumping you down as soon as you spawn?

I'll never forget Bungie amazingly altering the weapon layout for Team BRs @ Ascension to remove the Rocket Launcher but leaving the Banshee on it. The first team that got the Banshee first usually always steamrolled the other team. Bungie made some particularly baffling decisions for Halo 2 that made me question their competence.

I do also remember Frankie telling people that at upcoming patch would "practically eliminate modding and standbying" and...it didn't stop it at all. We all stopped playing Halo 2 less than a year into its life because it became such a cheater's playground.

And yeah, we ran into the Bungie crew in ranked one Friday night about a month after the game came out. We crushed them pretty hard 50-26 I think. We were amazed at how bad they played their own game. They took off immediately at the PCR screen.

Super excited for this. The amount of content is mind blowing. Perfect digital download game to have on your system for the entire generation.

Naw man, Bungie is heroes

343i is just living off Bungie's golden poop

etc.

If Halo 2 didn't have the strong map selection that it did, I don't think it would have been the massive success that it was. As I've made it clear in the past, there are a lot of flaws in H2's gameplay, but the maps were so amazing (and versatile) that it makes up for a lot of its deficiencies.

I didn't like Reach's gameplay, and without a good map selection I quickly lost interest. I thought H3's gameplay was superior to H2 for the most part (the netcode was certainly better), but I never did sink as much time into it, in part because the map selection was not as strong.

I know some players who deleted their DLC maps and bridged a player in their party host (for benevolent purposes, I should add). The amount of cheating encountered was pretty negligible.

One thing that I am most interested in knowing: Since the Xbox One allows the real time graphics switch in Halo 2: Anniversary to actually be real time, will the new power be utilized for this version of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary? In other words, will the Halo 1: Anniversary graphics switch be instant, too?

One other thing: Halo 1: Anniversary included the original Kinect support - is that in for this version, or no?

Thankfully, I had a mega ass old Xbox with a hard drive that started whirring whenever a DLC map would try to load during matchmaking. I backed out immediately. Also yeah, we had a guy in our party bridge me host every time. But eventually it got to the point where it was like, "Why do we have to do all this shit to ensure a non-cheat game? Shouldn't Bungie be doing this?" And so we quit Halo 2.

Both of those events bothered me.

I don't like playing the same thing over and over, either, but I also dislike being forced to play god-awful maps and gametypes along side those. Gametypes were at least improved in Reach over Halo 3, so I could get along with things a bit more there. Still isn't as appealing as what was handed to us in Halo 2. Map quality, awesome gametypes, we were just extremely fortunate those things were created so well.

Watching the IGN video, the blended playlists feature: Big Rumble (12 players FFA), Big Team Battle, Capture the Flag (5 vs.5), Grifball, Rumble Pit, Swat, Actionsack, Team Slayer, Team Snipers, Team Throwdown,

I'm not sure how concrete this will all be. They even list which games are in said hoppers. CTF, for instance, only lists Halo 1 and Halo 2.

While it would be nice to have their maps included, ultimately, I'm pretty sure they won't be added in. After all, this is the "Master Chief Collection". So I think 343i is shying away from the spin-offs for this package. But, I mean...

We're getting Halo 1 and 2 online multiplayer, does anything else even matter? XD

I'm not being greedy, it's just, I tapped out after after Halo 3. I was spent, but was looking forward to ODST and Reach remakes on XBone. I would pay much mojo to play them. Particularly Reach always seemed appealing to me since it ties into the first game. And I heard good things about it's multiplayer maps?

How quickly this has gone from joy to people crying about the smallest of details and bemoaning about games that aren't even in this compilation.

What we are getting is an absolutely ridiculous value.

The compilation following the Master Chief's exploits must also include games where there wasn't even mention of the Master Chief though, otherwise why would anyone buy this? /s

I'm pretty excited for this collection, I'm bummed that they are leaving the button glitches in H2, but that was barely encountered in matchmaking back in the day. The big things for me are standby and game manipulation (hacking) being dealt with through it being on dedicated servers on a so far untracked platform. Halo has always been a game I love and this collection will be incredible for hours of play in my X1. To the folks complaining: would you rather this was only H2A? Or maybe no release this year at all? There could be no collection, or plenty of other far worse scenarios for this release and what we are getting is better than what most people have any right to expect. It is certainly better than what nearly everyone on this forum was speculating it to be before the announcement yesterday. Take a step back and appreciate that in 5 months we will be able to play Halo 1-4 on new hardware from start to finish in the campaign and on nearly every single map from any of the releases of the games as well as all the DLC...for sixty fucking dollars. Seriously, people on the internet could complain about some of the greatest things.

Frankie, I for one applaud the work you and 343i do championing Halo. Keep up the great work. Most of us are thankful for this collection and now have renewed hope for H5 being everything Halo deserves.

Did I hear correctly that only 6 of the Halo 2 multiplayer maps got face lifts?

Correct, all Halo 2 maps will be available in their original look up'd to 1080p 60fps. 6 select halo 2 maps will also have a rebuilt/face lift version. These 6 maps will also have forge functionality.

IIRC it selects a few tracks at random, allows users to vote for one, then randomly selects one of the tracks weighted by the amount of votes it received, right?

Yes. It's weighted to choose the most popular choice, but always has a chance of choosing the less popular choices.

Xbox and Halo is saved! Exciting news

This honestly did save it.... I went from not giving a shit about the franchise after reach and 4, to plopping down 400 to play the most cherished game of my childhood (socom also of course). I can't wait for this release.

In the IGN video interview they confirmed that the transition between classic and anniversary would be instant for both Halo CE and Halo 2.

Man have I missed MVP....not that I got it all that often. It was neat to see at the end though.

Same. I have missed good halo multiplayer. I wasn't really satisfied with reach and just let down by halo 4
call of halo
. Hopefully this will rejuvenate the series and get halo back into the competitive multiplayer spotlight.

The more I think about it, it might be like old times simply because there's no good selection of games to compete. It's gonna be like 06 when you see 35 friends online and 32 are on Halo. Yeahhhh
