Eiji Aonuma: “No one explicitly said that that was Link.”

Nintendo just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Zelda for the Wii U, nor will they purchase any of Nintendo's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Nintendo has alienated an entire market with this move.

Nintendo, publicly apologize and make Link the protagonist or you can kiss your business goodbye

Blond hair, no sword, main weapon is a bow and arrow, uses something that looks suspiciously like a light arrow? Sounds like Zelda to me.

It still has to be Link unless they are pulling some kind of Big Boss/ Solid Snake thing. The face and hair are identical. It would be like having Street Fighter 5 show up with an identical Ryu character and people saying it's not Ryu. These characters are iconic.

Aonuma is just having some fun barring a weird story element, or the ability to design your character ala Skyrim.

Or like Link at the beginning of the game, before he gets the tunic and sword etc.

The face and hair are obviously NOT Zelda unless Nintendo is throwing out 25 years of character history and design.

Aryll has blonde hair, not brown.

Aryll has green eyes, not blue.

Not Link's sister unless they are "rebooting" Aryll.

Geez!! I can't believe I didn't think of that while watching the trailer! I knew the outfit looked different, but just chalked it up to it being a new game. Still, it looks like whoever it is, the game will be AWESOME.

Please, dear lord, tell me this is sarcasm?

How do you guys know it's even FEMALE?

It's an ELF - they've been gender-mistaken before.

Example:

This is actually a MALE ELF. I know, it's difficult to tell.

I think it's very telling that "Link" was not shown using a Sword in this debut trailer. How often does that happen?

Instead, "he" used a very special type of bow and arrow. While yes, Link also traditionally uses this item, more recently in popular culture, this has been stereotyped as the go to. Female weapon of choice (see; Hunger Games, Tomb Raider, even Zelda herself).

I think it might be true guys.

Let's do this, Create A Hylian, roam the world as your own descendant of Link and finally both genders can be played in the epic world of Zzzzzzzzzzzeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelda

Good thing Zelda was never a big seller in Japan!

Ugh. Why. WHY DO YOU HAVE TO DO THIS?!

The game looked amazing. Please don't ruin it with girl link, customized characters, etc.

Just give me link.
