Devil's Third on IGN now Wii U Exclusive

Gamespot footage for those who haven't seen it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlv5CfVqhTI

It's much better than the IGN demo.

I highlight this since it really looks as if the multiplayer part will be absolutely golden!
Was looking out for Devil's Third since its first announcement. It looks a lot as if they scrapped and reworked most of the game meanwhile and what we're looking at looks like a very early build.

I see a lot of potential in it, though. The fighting system looks as if it supports many different possibilities of interacting with weapons, objects, doing different sort of kills, playing the game to your own liking. And especially in multiplayer, it looks like it could be so much fun mixing all these different fighting styles. From a pure gameplay perspective, it seems very ambitious, and seeing as it is Itagaki, if all these different ways to fight and play are balanced in the end, it will be a blast.

Regarding the technical stuff: It looks kinda early build, but I must admit I like the style and the coloring. It looks as if an Arcade game had a child with Ninja Gaiden and a TPS and then SEGA sprinkled some blue skies onto it (I know SEGA has nothing to do with this but I get a bit of a SEGA-Dreamcast era vibe from the colors). And - not wanting to derail anything here but I rather have this look like some of Platinum Games output aka Metal Gear Rising (you know, on screenshots, Rising looks kinda bad but ingame it's so great) and have smooth framerate and that feel of satisfaction when you can interact with everything and get great player feedback when you destroy something or defeat an enemy in different ways than have it be corridor-cinematic-action game number 452462.

If this gets another year or two for polish, I think this will be a great action game.

Knowing Itagaki, this will rather be a 2016 release than an unfinished 2015 release. And, knowing Nintendo, they will rather have this polished up till infinity by Itagaki than releasing it too early. Furthermore, Nintendo is kinda known for pushing devs they partner up with to the limit, helping out with their own staff or providing a clear project outline (many ambitious projects fall flat since it can not be overstated how important it is to have a publisher or primary partner in development pushing a clear project outline. If anything, Nintendo is great at that usually and I think they are now confident in working with HD games after some earlier setbacks).

Um, it looks like absolute shovelware. Like, in every way, shape, and form. It's as if someone was making a deliberately awful version of Duke Nukem Forever. Can't imagine anyone wanting to pick this up unless they were straved for games or something. Which probably explains why it disappeared for so long.

watched the whole thing. this game has so many features! It reminds me of Timesplitters in that aspect.

edit: Itagaki mentions enemy AI as one of the things they still need to work on.

edit2: ok, after some thought I think I'm beginning to understand what makes this game stand out from your standard online third person shooter. I don't play many of those so maybe this stuff is only new to me, hopefully someone here can correct me if I'm wrong.
The way I see it, there's a much larger emphasis on movement and using your environment than in a regular online shooter. In that sense, this game is probably closer to Sunset Overdrive and Splatoon than its gritty/bloody looks would lead you to believe.

Well after seeing that longer footage..It still looks bad, but I'll get it anyway. I guess I need something for the WiiU besides Bayo.

Nintendo are saints for reviving this. It has 0 sales potential, it's on the wall and yet they are pretty much letting it exist for some hardcore fan-cred. I just hope it plays okay, surely Itagaki can manage that.

Eh, actually this looks like a pretty decent rental.

yeah, don't know why IGN footage looked so rough, compared to this. not that this is great, but neither horrible

It had low sales potencial. Now that it turned into a WiiU exclusive will sell even worse.

actually, it is the other way around.
it was dead, and now that Nintendo is funding and publlishing it, it will sell obviously more. maybe just 1 copy more, but still..
same as Bayonetta2

It looks somehow decent but not as good as some of Itagaki's best games (DOA3, NG1, etc). If I ever buy it, I'll do it when it's 19.99$ or something.

It definitely seems like we're seeing an early build of the second go-around at this project. Hopefully that means with another year or so, this game can be polished up to something more in line with Itagaki's usual level of polish. The Gamespot video has got me slightly more optimistic, as there's definitely potential there. Let's just hope Nintendo push for the game to live up to it.

EDIT

Is there any word on the framerate they're targeting for this game? Given Itagaki's history, and the nature of the action in this game, I would assume 60fps? That would explain the game's less-than-cutting edge visuals. I would at least hope Itagaki aiming for 60fps, after his feelings on the Sigma games...

Being able to make your own bases (levels) for multilayer is pretty awesome.
Game looks better than I expected, seems pretty high quality and feature packed for a mid range not triple AAA game.

Huh? That's pretty harsh. It looks fun.
Kind of reminds me of something like The Club, which was also quite fun.

I agree. This looks like bargain bin material. People just get hyped because some company made a Wii U exclusive.

Have we got confirmation, or are we just going based of the stream feeds? Youtube caps at 30, and I wouldn't be surprised if other streams do as well. Would love to hear some on the floor impressions or, ideally, confirmation from the developers themselves.

@Diablos991 People were and are hyped for this game because Itagaki is a game design legend who made Ninja Gaiden Black, still arguably the finest character action game ever made. Regardless of how scrappy it looks now, if he gets enough time to give it his polish, it could be something very enjoyable.

Very few in this thread are hyped but if we were, you would be incorrect as to why.

It's really not difficult to understand why people are interested in Itagaki's next project, the one he originally announced four years ago.

That Gamespot footage looks miles better than the IGN one. Still doesn't look that good of course, but at least it doesn't look horrible now.

You need to get The Wonderful 101 too.

Of course. Wii U owners are so starved for games that they get happy when any game is shown. /s

Or you know, maybe the people enthusiastic about it (I don't see that many people very enthusiastic about it though) don't think it looks bargain bin material?
edit: Not to mention it's possible other people appreciate the creator too and believe in him.

He said the game was 30 fps "like the battlefield series" a year ago or something when the game was still in limbo

This looks completely uninteresting.

Considering how people keep going on about the man and continuously crap on Team Ninja, I expected a lot more.

And that smoking while behind cover bit looked like it was straight out of Vanquish.

Itagaki will always get the benefit of the doubt from me.

Game looks interesting, but does remind me of the B-tier 360 action games we got a few years ago. It's got a long way to go before it starts to resemble the quality of Ninja Gaiden.

Visually this game looks bad, and comes of as really generic to me. But the gameplay seems like it has the potential to be fun.

When I was watching the IGN stream yesterday, a question was asked which included the words "60 fps". I don't think the interpreter asked Itadaki the question because we never got an answer.

The game is clearly quite janky at the moment, but I'm also pretty sure the player just isn't very good at the game. Here's why:

- At 15:49 of the Gamespot video it's clear that there is a slide move. The player only uses it that one time.

- The player spends much time at ground level using cover, and sometimes just seems to leisurely stroll out into the line of fire.

-It appears that verticality can be used to gain a tactical advantage, and death from above takedowns are shown during the MP trailer. The player even seems to climb up on things only to demonstrate it can be done, but then just jumps down.

- A reticle always appears on-screen when guns are equipped, there is even reticle bloom when the player runs or jumps. This suggests to me that Blindfire and hipfire are gameplay options that the player is simply ignoring in favor of ADSing at all times.

- There's definitely a block that's seldom used.

- I swear I even saw a fucking back dash during that ninja fight.

It could also just be severe input lag rendering the game almost unplayable, I don't know. However it looks like the game is being played safe and boring, when stylish play is entirely possible.

I exactly agree with this.

Seeing as Nintendo are publishing this hopefully it will meet certain Nintendo standards of quality and will benefit from being tested by the Mario Club.

I paid good money for this Dynex!

Is Nintendo officially the publisher on this, or is it just exclusive to the WiiU? If it's the former, this suddenly becomes a lot more promising, for the reason you mentioned.

At the risk of sounding cynical to hell, I can't think of another publisher who's pick this up then willingly making it a Wii U exclusive.

EDIT

I'm also pretty certain in the Gamespot video he goes into talking about working with Nintendo's internal guys.

Even if this game is as good as Ninja Blade from the 360 rather than Ninja Gaiden, it's precisely the kind of game with the kind of options for online MP that Wii U needs to have, and that Nintendo needs to push.

I hope it gets improved and polished repeatedly until release!

Yes Nintendo is the official publisher.

See here:
Nintendo E3 2014 Press Kit
It comes under Nintendo Published.

An interesting thing is that the Devil's Third screenshots in the Nintendo Press Kit are 1080p. 1920 x 1080 BMP's.

By comparison the Bayonetta 2 screenshots in the Press Kit are 720p. 1280 x 720 BMP's.

Back in July 2012, THQ relinquished the rights to Devil's Third and transferred ownership to Itagaki and Valhalla Games even though the game was nearly finishing its development, but THQ was unwilling to provide a big marketing budget for it. Initially, THQ wanted to keep the IP, but the publisher respected Valhalla's wish to keep the IP instead. Apparently, a big part of what made Devil's Third development take so long was due to the middleware supplier of the game's engine went out of business.

I suppose Nintendo now owns the rights to the IP since they seem to always do (like with Eternal Darkness, Golden Sun and Sin & Punishment except for a few IPs like Rare's Perfect Dark).

Let just puyt it here (from Adriansang) for curiosity
"When Devil's Third does see release in 2013, it may be on more than just PS3 and Xbox 360. Itagaki told Impress that he and THQ are actively looking into making Wii U into a compatible platform. He added that he's personally very excited about the possibility.
Incidentally, Itagaki's first impression upon seeing Wii U at Nintendo's press conference (he'd yet to try the system out himself at the time of the Impress Watch interview) was that it was designed with consideration of Japan. Japanese homes are small and thus can't have multiple televisions. This is why Japan has gone the way of the portable, Itagaki feels. He believes that Wii U's concept of letting you move the game over to the controller when the television is taken is Nintendo's attempt at combatting the trend of lower console sales in the Japanese market. "I believe it is a good idea," he said

Gamespot footage looks way better. It's amazing how video simply going through poor compression can make a game look far worse.

Seeing it now, the tech looks fine. The art style is still pretty terrible, but I'm really liking the look of combat, and multiplayer looks great.

I'm missing the wall running though. It's such a fun feature in Titanfall, I don't see a good reason for them removing it.

Woah woah woah. I just saw the Gamespot gameplay. What's so bad about this game? It actually looks fun. This is what I've always wanted in a shooter. The fact that it's in 3rd person and allows all kind of action is cool. I was sold when they said the game was all about over the top fun. Plus, the fruit blender sold me.

Yeah, the art is trash and the character looks very unlikeable. Another bald dudebro.

The Gamespot footage makes it look pretty fun. Unpolished, but fun. And I like how dumb and over-the-top it seems to be.

I think people forgot that they literally had to scrap the entire game due to being forced to change engines mid-development. Some sort of legal issue. And when you consider that the game wasn't being financed after THQ dumped them until Nintendo picked them up, it makes perfect sense that the game looks this rough.

I trust that both Nintendo and Itagaki will be working their asses off to bring the game up to their very high standards of polish. We don't even have a release date yet, so I'm guessing they're waiting until they're satisfied with the project before announcing anything more.

Makes sense. I can't bring myself to be excited though. Not until they fix this game up.

I woke up yesterday to the news that DEVIL'S THIRD was announced and Wii U exclusive. I fucking pre-ordered it for the Xbox 360 ages ago!! I was motherfucking ready. I was ready to buy a console I said I wouldn't buy for more than $149.

Itagaki is my MAN, I get so pumped for Itagaki's antics and I fucking love his Ninja Gaiden games. I was ready for whatever he was doing next because it had to be the fucking realness...and then I saw this shit. It looks so fucking bad. Visually, the gameplay, everything about it is just awful looking. Is this being bundled with Bullet Witch and Vampire Rain? Good God, it looks absolutely dreadful.

I really hope this get's better. I hope everything about this improves and we can get Itagaki and his team pushing Wii U to the bleeding edge like he did on the Xbox with Ninja Gaiden Black and bringing us the best combat systems in gaming like in NG:B and Ninja Gaiden II. Right now, it looks like Itagaki has become the Ninja Dog that Hayashi has always been.

I wonder if MS passed on this or were unapproached. Itagaki has always had such a solid relationship with them that I was shocked he never ended up working there.
