Nintendo demoed this very early, they showed alot of 2015 stuff. Devil's third wasn't ready. Nintendo trying to sell Wii Us

It looks a bit generic and unpolished, but I think a lot of people are overstating exactly how bad it looks. It looks like your middle of the road last gen shooter, which isn't anything to gloat about, but is still a far cry from a low rent PS2 action game. Itagaki aside it's nothing worth getting hyped on, but it might help scratch an itch for action fans when they've exhausted the Platinum stuff, and honestly Wii U needs a better variety of software in genres like this, even if it's not top tier stuff.

Even a middling game can contribute to a better overall ecosystem, and with Itagaki at the helm it's possible it might even have some unforeseen redeeming qualities when all is said and done. Look at the difference between the Hyrule Warriors reveal and the most recent media. It's obviously not Nintendo caliber, but it's come a hell of a long way since the first footage. I have the sense Nintendo pushed for showing Devil's Third in a janky state versus not showing it at all because they need to pull every string possible to promote the Wii U. I'm curious how long the dev team has spent with the platform at this stage. Here's hoping the final result is more polished and appealing.

I totall agree.
Let's see when and how it will come out: for now, not thrilled but I'll keep an eye on it

A little surprised Nintendo is publishing.

Well my guess is that Nintendo wants some of the bro-shooter pie to attract people to Wii U.

This game isn't really my cup of tea and it looked REALLY early (the first defeated enemy clipped through the fucking ground in that IGN presentation).

It also seems like quite a lot of effects were missing.

The game probably won't come out bevore Fall 2015. Maybe it looks better then.

Hope someone at Nintendo steps in and tells Itagaki that this game looks dull and offers advice as to how to improve it.

This looks super fucking stupid, completely unfit for publication by Nintendo - and I LOVE IT. This could live up to Deadly Premonition levels of play-it-because-I-hate-love-it

Doesn't this go against Itagaki's philosophy of only developing on the most powerful platform?

That's hard to do if you don't have any money. Upgrading this so it'll look at least decent for next gen platforms would have cost them who knows how much. It still looks like a low budget 7th gen game even on Wii-U.

Even from that angle it's an odd pickup. At least Bayonetta has more of an inbuilt fanbase for the franchise and pedigree as a quality hack-and-slash, which could draw some HW sales. This on the other hand really doesn't look like it can compete against the rest of the bro-shooter pie. Does Itagaki have the type of fanbase that will buy a platform for his games and is that fanbase even particularly large these days?

I joined the thread to congratulate Nintendo on signing another interesting core title for the Wii U, than I watched the gameplay. While I only watched the first three minutes (slow internet with limited traffic), I can probably safely say this game looks horrible.

The graphics are pretty bad and the gameplay doesn't any better. The perspective change for the shooting is such a stupid idea and everything looks clunky, although that could have been the player. The little bit of melee combat I saw also didn't look interesting.
The mediocre game Wet actually looked better than this.

The trailer still makes the game look good though.

Demo didn't look good, but trailer was interesting.
I still believe in Itagaki for the gameplay, and Nintendo usually has the "polish your gameplay before your graphics" motto. I'm sure it'll be better next year.

Re-watching the demo, it doesn't look that terrible but rather just another really generic shooter. They need to up the level of crazy and silliness.

Graphics look pretty bad, but I'm still interested. Pretty shocking it looks the way it does coming from ex team-ninja guys though. Game reminds me of WET without the style. Never did play the full game of WET though.

Money would have been better spent convincing Kojima to release MGS V and PP on Wii U as well. If Konami is releasing it on PS3/360 there's no reason why it shouldn't also be on Wii U...

Ah well... at least Nintendo is supporting a young company. I'm just afraid this is going to die a brutal death at retail and Valhalla won't be any better off for having made it Wii U exclusive.

I have to disagree with that, Nintendo knows if it's a multiplat war they have no chance of winning. If your going to spend the money the only way your going to appeal to those gamers is by giving them something they can't get elsewhere.

I want to remain optimistic. This is the man that was at the helm for Ninja Gaiden, but this looks very rough... I hope this releases late 2015 and give this more time in the oven.

The story is a non issue to me, but the gameplay looked lacking polish.

Nah. WiiU simply can't output the graphics dudebros want from their games, and the other consoles will have more shooters anyway (with more marketing behind them). There's no point in fighting that battle.

Hiring Itagaki makes sense because the same crowd that wants Bayonetta is likely to play a good action game from him. DT doesn't look even remotely good, but maybe it'll get better.

I think it is a cheap addition to the portfolio, in a quest to offer more variety to Wii U owners (actual and potential), trying to re-inforce the idea that they can have a decent output even missing the vast majority of proper AAA multiplatform release.
I'm not saying that they will succeed in this, but at least this can offer another exclusive game, in a genre that they don't cover internally, reinforcing the partnership with a well known developer that, maybe, will develop again another title for another Nintendo console in the future
That's my guess.

Or, Iwata liked the pitch back in the days, and, as for Fatal Frame, decided to develop it for his console ;p
(I've heard this rumor about Fatal Frame)

I'm always happy for new Wii U exclusives but thought the trailer was trying too hard to check every "adult game" mark, from the rocket launchers, scantily clad ladies, ultraviolence, and even a swig of booze at the end. It won't be high on my radar but will keep on eye on the review scores.

So an itagaki game...

You know, the more video I've seen the more this has grown on me.

It does look not great and is quite rough (it still reminds me of some low budget Eastern Euro action game) but I don't know, there seems to be some potential in there.

The game has had a very hard road to get this far, maybe now with some stability (can't really get more stable than having Nintendo as your publisher) Itagaki and his team can smooth things out and deliver a solid game.

The more games the Wii U gets, the better. I'll leave my judging of the game when it actually comes out. Glad to see Nintendo trying to get games out of their comfort zone in their library.

What state was DT in when THQ went bankrupt?
Itagaki left Tecmo in 2008/2009 to form his own studio. As far as I know this is the only game they've been working on.
It was announced at E3 2011.
THQ filed for bankruptcy in Dec 2012.
Itagaki stated the game was 80% done Dec 2013 and would be releasing in 2014.
Which brings us to now.

you people are too harsh.

Isn't this the game Itagaki mortgaged his house to buy back the rights from THQ?

He and his team seem to have a lot of faith in it.

The graphics don't bother me. The setting is a non issue (price to pay for a recent itagaki game). The shooting looks like ninja Gaiden shooting with guns.

The melee combat upsets me greatly. This is what I want from an itagaki game and it doesn't look like an improvement over ninja Gaiden.

Along with The Wondeful 101, Zelda Musou, and initially the Ninja Gaiden 3 update. It's strange how a lot of people are saying character action games are becoming more and more niche while Nintendo seems to be outwardly trying to appeal to this audience.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Watched the preview. Conceptually I like the game, and I have a soft sport for janky rough shit as long as the mechanics are enjoyable and feedback for action satisfying.

This, however, looks extremely rough in play and that's what bothers me. While I'm sure there's a degree of influence from the person playing and bugs/issues with the current build of the game, the preview itself highlighted uninterested, bog standard encounters, erratic enemy AI pathfinding and animation, glitchy animations, and no particular stand out feature as a saving grace. Snapping to shooting from third person seems okay on paper, but the presentation here is disorientating and it's hard to understand why it isn't just third person instead.

Will stay interested because I like some pulpy, ultravoilent jank. And I like the idea of a shooter with a proper melee combat system. But yeah. Bad preview.

This looks like the sort of game I hope I forget exists and then in a few years happen upon it in some bargain bin for next to nothing and I'm like wtf is this and check it out and it's janky and super stupid and good for a laugh and cheap fun.

I imagine it wasn't Itagaki's choice to the show the game in its current state. Also, I wonder if porting to a new console/new engine has caused trouble for the original design.

I don't think they're niche, just not big enough for big publishers. Bayonetta, DmC, Rising all sold reasonably well, they can't reach God of War numbers but they also cost much less to make. Competing with Western publishers in the AAA shooter market is crazy expensive and difficult, competing in the character action market is much better.
