Sunset Overdrive - E3 Trailer and Gameplay

Played this game yesterday. It was so much fun, got the hang of the traversing about half way through the level. Once you do it's like a little "ah-ha" moment, when everything clicks. Absolutely wonderful game. Look forward to buying it and playing it with my friends. Will definitely be checking it out throughout E3.

i loooove the concept, but execution is iffy to me

on a gameplay level the speed and movement they want to laud themselves on is a bit lacking personally- the air control is weak and the general speed of actions is roughly 66% to 50% of what i like. at the very minimum the lack of air movement control is worrying, 'cuz that's a major part of these kinds of games- the kinda floaty rock stuff shown is bad

on a tonal level something about the style represented in the game is 'too much', with a real 'out of touch old guys trying to be cool' vibe to me. like you know how some folks are put off by the 'i'm in touch with the internet/youth!' kinda 'tude that wildstar has? it's the same deal here.

but that's just tone, the gameplay part bugs me alot more because seriously gat dang i love the concept of mixing jet set radio and a third person shooter into a really sweet superfast paced action/style shooter

edit: not sayin' everything is wrong, 'cuz there's a whoooole lot right in the gameplay footage too but the difference between what looks wrong and right is like so drastic it's hard to tell what the game will be like! the on-foot sections basically look drab, but the grinding sections look fantastic and capture that speed i really want. if the design of the game is like purposefully to where you want to be grinding 100% of the time i'd totally be down

edit 2: also the guy in the character trailer is totally joey from friends.

Anyone go to the Microsoft store event?

Are we having Sunset TV this week? I hope so.

God, it's so nice to watch people who know what they're doing playing this game. And it's also awesome to watch people who have no idea of what they're doing. It's sad that I find it refreshing that a AAA game requires you to play well in order to have awesome shit, instead of just pressing A, but it is what it is.

at least one episode

So cool that vampire Bill went to go play this at the Microsoft store event!

Got to play this earlier and it's my fave playable at e3 so far. A lot of fun and feels super good to control.

I don't care how lined up or course like this little piece maybe could have been that was fuckin DOPE.

Seems faster...my only complaint from the first gameplay. Genuinely wish I had a One for this here bad boy.

Nice job, insomniac!

Anyone have any questions the wanna ask? I'll be at the SO booth for a while tomorrow.

lucky you. Ask them how many weapons are in the game, as they have been showing mainly the same ones and obviously the weapons make up a large part of the game.

Much appreciated.

Do they have plans to introduce a boost feature or a way to increase general speed for more seasoned gamers who have played games like JSR for years.

When will see some in depth character customisation.

Not much discussion about the game... it looks real fun like Dead Rising meets Jet Set Radio

That's just the E3 overload. There were multiple threads for this that went on for tons of pages.

And that's why it was very, very wise to show this a few weeks before E3. I feel it's getting lots of attention but people will want to talk about the other games shown at E3.

Don't forget the game looks generic and has zero appeal. Not surprising threads are dropping like bricks.

This game looks so awesome. Pretty sad to see not much hype for the game. Easily one of the best games at the show IMO.

I agree, this game has gotten all the buzz it needed. I'm already having a hard time tracking all the new information about games I've been interested in beforehand.
Something like Sunset Overdrive that, at least for me, came practically out of nowhere, probably wouldn't have gotten the attention it deserves. Having seen actual gameplay prior to the e3 press conference didn't lessen my excitement at all.

I love what this game is (or seems to be), but I think their E3 showing was piss poor and they really didn't do themselves any service with what they showed.

My hype is still at an all time high, you've probably seen me post my love in every single Sunset Overdrive thread as of late, and that hasn't changed, but really, in a game about killing in traversal and crazy explosive weapons, why the hell did they show a demo about going essentially nowhere, in a mostly flat environment, and without even showing the craziness of a filled-up style meter (that we have seen in some b-roll reveal footage last month). The thing never went upwards of "level 2" style, when you'd expect the demo to climax out at full style.

This is beyond me.The game looks more explosive and alive in any of the screenshots or previous footage than in the E3 demo. I'm still very much interested in the game as I said, but I felt like giving this honest feedback to the guys at insomniac (i know they read here) because I really feel they showed the game in a very bad light. What was seen at MS conference certainly wouldn't have made me interested if I wasn't already sold 5 times before.

But anyway, what matters to me really is the game, so please keep rocking guys.

Edit : mainly talking about the Single Player demo here, just to be clear.

Is there any info about difficulty, enemy AI, and the such? Was watching one stream of this and the person was grinding power lines for a long time just shooting enemies and not a single one even seemed to recognize his existence. They never even scaled a building to attack him, just seemed like cannon fodder. I know E3 demos are usually on easy/god mode, and perhaps they wanted to just show off the kill animations. Hence my original question, have they shown or talked about difficulty at all?

I was surprised as well how much slower and "off" everything felt compared to what I've seen before. I now wonder if those were bull-shots and just clever video editing, I really hope not.

I think that the latest footage nicely demonstrates why the speed is pretty much perfect the way it is; I can't imagine myself being able to remain in control if movement was any faster during all those tightly connected jumps, pole swings and rail grinds. Still, I guess an option for masochists those who want to challenge themselves wouldn't hurt.

Now I'm left scratching my head. Everything I've seen of the game before looked good, but what they've shown at the conference (and later on the show floor) looked so much more riotous, smooth, explosive and just plain FUN that it cemented SO as my most wanted game this holiday. The demo also had a great deal of verticality to it, so I'm really not sure where you saw that mostly flat environment.

I really don't think it is. I'm pretty sure the explosive crazy stuff we've seen is this game. I guess when you're making a game every day for so long it can be a bit hard to take a step back and figure out how you should present your whole game in only 3 minutes of show + make a "demo" of only a part of it (especially when it's an open world).

Maybe it's also the fact that making a demo specifically for e3 takes a lot of time, and when your game launches some months later then you might have to choose not to spend too much resources/time to work on a totally separate e3 demo that you'll throw away post-e3, versus working on the actual game launch that still requires a lot of work before it's done.

I really trust Insomniac has an awesome game here, so that's why I wanted to share how I felt about the way they showed it here.

I disagree. The demo was awesome. It showed the colorful world, the fun traversal, a different enemy, cool guns etc.. It was so refreshing.

I'm not entirely sure it should be an issue, you are just trying to show the best bits of your game, not sure why they would withhold or be unable to reach that explosive level just because its a longer demo. I really hope you are right, cause I'm a little bit worried after the FUSE debacle.

Well I'm glad you felt that way then. Obviously this is highly subjective, and more of an "overall feel" thing, but imo even with the roller coaster, and even with the fact that there was a lot of bouncing, I thought that compared to the "rooftops" footage we'd seen before, and how high up in the city you can go, this really just felted like a smalled closed-down environment with not much to it.

Now I don't want to derail the thread with that because it isn't even about the game (again I have no worries that it's awesome), but how it was shown here. I'm happy to see the demo was well received by other people, and I hope the general feeling towards it is more like yours than mine :)
