E3 doesn't have an effect until the games on display actually release. Nobody outside of hardcore types is buying a console based on trailers.

Well no but maybe it gets them thinking that yeah, Mario kart was fun with my friends, and look into it a week later, and maybe consider it.

Ok but that literally makes no sense. I just spend like 10 minutes gathering numbers from prior GAF NPD threads.
YTD at this point last year was 260.3k (roughly speaking.)
If the YTD thus far would be 90% up it would be roughly 494k

When subtracting this year's results so far that would give the Wii U this month would be over 240k. I don't suggest for a second that the Wii U sold that much, but the percentages are off somewhere.

That's weird. All the info we are getting is from iansherrs tweets. There's a good possibility he fucked up somewhere. Has Nirolak or Aquamarine taken any note of this?

We should ask creamsugar for hardware numbers to verify.

Yeah. If you look at other major cross gen games, the current gen versions have sold the most (and helped to drive hardware sales of the new consoles), despite last gen install base being tens of millions more.

With Titanfall being the defacto, high profile Xbox One game, it's amazing that this didn't happen.

3ds could have been "saved" (at least they would have made real money ) if they had a 3ds redesing + lots of pokemon amiibos for the new pokemon games launch (in november, i think it is)

But amiibo is not coming to the 3ds until 2015... (another missed oportunity, nintendo). Amiibo real potential is pokemon.

I ran an estimate the other day for WW PS4 sales based off of NPD numbers and general WW to US sales ratios. Pegged PS4 at around 8.5M. I think they're probably waiting to crack 10M as it's slowed down from a million a month

Except for the fact that any new Xbox One buyers are most likely getting the Titanfall bundle, which NPD doesn't count in numbers.

I didn't even post my opinion on the subject and yet you put words in my mouth.

For the record, I wasn't implying that a viral phenomenon like the Luigi Death Stare is boosting console sales but that it exists outside of GAF/Reddit on various other channels. There have been news articles about it on non-gaming websites from The Guardian to a few others.

I'm seeing this on my phone and damn it almost looks like a real picture. ND about to make bank this Gen. Also, did we get Wii U numbers yet? I thought Reggie said they saw an increase by a factor of 4.

The Regge statement was from July while those hardware sales which are already in the OP are from two days.

I'm not sure how you could really do that since the PS4 has released in many, many more markets in 2014 (if you were using NPD numbers from 2013 and the worldwide number they gave for the end of December.)

I'm guessing it probably only sold around 50k or less. Still, its nice to see the Software sales are holding up incredibly strong for both next gen. consoles with them outselling their last gen. versions.

Oh software sales were up for the first time forever! (And no one seems to care) Watch_Dogs, MK8 and MLB effect I guess. Probably nothing of note last year.

The best-selling new releases of last year were Metro: Last Light, Donkey Kong: Country Returns and Resident Evil: Revelations HD. None of these games managed to sell over 100,000 units.
