16-bit Cityscapes

Here are a few Super Famicom games. Sorry I haven't posted the names of the games, but I saved a load of screenshots a while back (including these) and can't remember all of them. If you want to know a certain game though just ask and I'll find out.

Apologies for the somewhat late bump, but I had to mention how much I enjoyed this thread.

I too love the way in which cities, are particularly their skylines, are portrayed in classic games (and older movies by the way). They always seem so exotic to me, like magical worlds that beckon us on the horizon. Their exoticness was especially increased by the fact that I grew up in The Netherlands and thus only knew skyscrapers from games and movies.

Having visited big American cities like New York, Boston, L.A. and Houston for the first time these last few years, I came to the conclusion that (A) my view on such skylines is forever tied to games mentioned in this thread (especially beat 'm ups like Double Dragon and Final Fight, and fighting games), and that (B) the real life counterparts often seem less exciting somehow...

This was one of my favorite threads of last year, and I don't want it to die.

So lets start off 2014 right with, Ninja Combat's cityscape:

Good to see this thread appear again. Loved it last time and still do.

Sorry, nothing concrete to contribute right now, but will try to think about what to add later.

So far, fighting games and beat 'm ups seem to be the most used examples. Anybody know of some other genres to check? Run and gun games or action platformers perhaps?

Hoo boy, this thread is delivering. Most of my favorites have already been covered (Stardust Speedway, all the SNK love, & Streets of Rage, whose cityscape is actually my desktop atm).

Still, I'm not sure if I saw this here yet:

It's even better in the arcades, but that'd definitely be cheating the "16-Bit" angle.

Technically 8-bit, but close enough. I really enjoyed the cityscapes in Air Zonk, particularly in this level, with all of the simulated traffic in the distance:

All of the levels has some great parallax as well.

I actually have a folder with a ton of art in it called "dithered anime art" that I keep some good stuff in.

If you're reading this, you probably know Akira inspired a shitload of game backgrounds.

Anyway, I realize not all of these are cityscapes, I just want an excuse to post some of them.

Huh, Akira... You're right. I didn't particularly enjoy it when I watched it, but after seeing this thread I kind of want to watch the movie again, just to look at it.

The reason why I like many of the 16-bit cityscapes is because the limited colors and the individual pixels for windows really give it a certain unique look.

King of Monsters (Neo Geo)

Immediately thought of this. The second game is has much better gameplay, but the first game has actual cities to smash. No good screenshots that I could find, so here's a video.

Here are a few Super Famicom games. Sorry I haven't posted the names of the games, but I saved a load of screenshots a while back (including these) and can't remember all of them. If you want to know a certain game though just ask and I'll find out.

The Godzilla shots are from Kaijuu Daikessen, which actually seems to be a pretty good game. The ones with the guy that looks like Trunks are from the Go Go Ackman games, which is based off a short comedy manga by Akira Toriyama.

Gundam Wing: Endless Duel has another cool licensed game cityscape. You can immediately see that the city is inside an O'Neill cylinder.

Incredible. Thank you! All these look so cool. Especially that Merry Go Round one. My new new phone wallpaper :lol

edit: not to be greedy, but you wouldn't happen to have that one in a larger size, would you?

I'm pretty sure everything I posted is in its native resolution except for the Tekkaman Blade one. The only way you'd get it bigger is by making it bigger yourself, in photoshop or something.

If you're willing to post it to a Minus gallery or something, I'd love to see more. Detailed '80s/'90s anime is great.

Please do not use Minus. They notoriously randomly delete peoples images and also have rotten loading speeds.

If you want lossless images, use Sta.sh or Flickr. Sta.sh is the file host DeviantArt uses so it's very fast and reliable, and everyone knows Flickr.

Ah, okay. Guess I didn't think of the source of these. Not exactly 4K resolution :lol

Still look great, though. Thanks again.

ESP.Rade had some pretty cool ones since most of the game is set on an urban setting. The last battle was specially great looking.

That Sailor Moon Arcade game by Gazelle had some pretty nice spritework and backgrounds too. If I´m not mistaken, it was done by Joker Jun as well as ESP.Rade.
