Wow, i didn't expect THAT amount of hate, 6 years later. I guess it didn't grow up very well for many here, but imho it's probably one of the 2-3 best PS3 exclusives and one of the best games ever made. One of the last TRUE old-school games, and a real emotional rollercoaster.

I think I only love/loved MGS4 because it was more MGS and more of my fav character SS. As far as the story and they direction in which the plot went, I hated it... But I couldn't stop playing it. I wish it had gone differently tho.

First last gen game I played. It seriously blew my mind. The production values were insane, those crazy intro movies man...
Looked amazing at the time and the gameplay is pretty damn good.
Playing while listening to the podcast will help you discover a ton of little secrets, there's just so much to discover.
Returning to
Shadow Moses
with the music playing... I had tears in my eyes.
It's one of those games you just have to experience, with all its flaws and eccentricities and cutscenes, it's a crazy package but it's so worth it.

Best fan service ever. It comes down to whether you like it or not, the game doesn't really stands up as a standalone title, but holy moly that was like a love letter to many MGS fans out there.

This just highlights how poor 2008 was for console gaming.

O_O

It had LBP/Fallout 3/Dead Space/Braid/etc.

Recently finished the game for the first time. Don't think it deserved the ridiculously good reviews at all, thought it was the worst in the mainline series and the beginning was just so boring. Then again, it starts to pick up towards the middle and overall I thought it was decent, I guess it got GOTY 2008 on GAF for a reason, hopefully hype wasn't the sole reason for that.

I loved it at the time. Looking back? I hate everything about it, think I just enjoyed it because it was an MGS game. Don't think I'll ever play it again.

Terrible game. Absolutely no redeeming qualities at all. Except Metal Gear Online, but that was also a poor mess.

Overall I enjoyed Metal Gear AC!D 2 more.

That's funny considering it was my favorite series until this game.

Loved MGS4. Best part?

Metal Gear Online.

That was my shit.

I hope the old gang gets together for MGS5, but for me it would be like when MJ returned.. to play for the Wizards.

Having grew up with these games and playing them as they release, that Ocelot fight at the end:

"LIQQQQUIDDDDDDDDDDD!"

"SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!!"

Goosebumps every time... I think a MGS marathon is needed soon.

Awful game. Thought it was ok the first time around, like I'd heard it was so amazing and just played through waiting for the amazing to happen. Act 3 was garbage. Act 4 started off hype but then those weird robots killed it, and then the awful Naomi and Hal crying cutscene buried it. Act 5 was like, one room, and a couple bosses. Then a crap movie at the end. And don't talk to me about that 'epic' fight at the end. Not when it wasn't really Liquid. Not when it wasn't really Ocelot, since he was in Liquid mode. How can a final battle against some fake non-person that simultaneously ruined two great characters be epic?

I was playing through the series earlier this year, and came back to this. Popped it in, first two acts ok for gameplay, hit Act 3, give up for a week, come back to Act 4, quit. Just can't finish it again, knowing how terrible it is overall. I tried to pay attention better with the cutscenes, knowing what the plot is more or less--and it makes no damn sense. It's shitty writing, shitty plot, nanomachines everywhere, Naomi makes no sense, Raiden and Rose and Colonel makes no sense, and fucking Liquid Ocelot makes nooooooo sense whatsoever. The whole thing just shits all over the greatness that was MGS2 and MGS3.

Sorry about the swearing, even self-edited a bit. I've been watching Eastbound and Down a lot since HBO hit Amazon Prime.

Edit: More swearing out.

It was such a great game with some of the best cutscenes ever in gaming.

Although I sometimes think back to the trailer that Kojima showed with the first person view of soldiers on the battlefield and how Snake was like a phantom, then BAM they get taken out before they even knew what hit'em.

After a whole generation of gaming, Kojima finally has the hardware power to do that trailer justice.

Same here. I was fine with the overall premise (pissing bipedal cow robots aside), but I grew increasingly disillusioned as the game progressed. The return to Shadow Moses is both the best and worst part of the game; it's the most interesting locale and a wonderful throwback for fans of the series, but at the same time it just serves to remind you how much better of a game the first MGS was.

And goddamn did Kojima need a competent editor for the MGS4 script. The ending scene could have been copy/pasted out of Gravity's Rainbow and would have made just as much sense.

Love this game. Got me to play the rest of the series (which I still haven't finished lol) but this was probably my third favorite game last gen. I don't even have an issue with the cut scenes, as I genuinely liked the characters (plus the Raiden scene was so stupidly badass).

not just one of the worse MGS games but one of the worse games i've ever had to play.

watching snake smoke during the install was more entertaining than the cut-scenes in this POS.

This game is literally a punishment.

It's the sins of the fanbase for not accepting MGS2.

WE BROUGHT THIS ON OURSELVES

No, seriously. The amount of "fanservice" in this game is fucking horrible.

"LOL I'M PHSYCO MANTIS REMEMBER ME SNAKE?!"
"I'M GONNA READ YOUR MIND, REMEMBER HOW I DID THAT?"
"WAIT, YOU DON'T HAVE A MEMORY CARD, OHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOOOO".
"WHY AM I ALIVE, EVEN AFTER MY HEART BREAKING MONOLOGUE IN THE FIRST GAME? WHO KNOWS!?!!!"

Easily one of the best games of the generation. I replay it every now and then, still a very good looking game. I wonder if TPP will top the REX vs RAY fight, or the fight with Liquid Ocelot at the end of the game, those are some of my favorite moments in the series. That REX vs RAY fight could have easily been made into its own game, it was seriously fun.

The entire game is Kojima trying to please fans and that's why it's awful. 1-3 he did whatever the fuck he wanted and it was awesome.

4 is when he lost is spine. 4 is where the franchise took a turn down a path it couldn't come back from. 4 is where MGS died.

But hey, keep trying to bleed more life out of this universe with GZ/PP, Hideo... *rolls eyes*

Absolutely.

4 is when he lost is spine.

That's a great way to describe it.

4 is where the franchise took a turn...

It sure did!

...down a path it couldn't come back from.

Exac-- wait, what?

4 is where MGS died.

Ah, I get it. This is an ironic echo of the over the top, melodrama that the MGS series is famous for, isn't it? Very clever!

Haha. It's true though, the game killed the series. At least for anyone with sense and taste.

It's sad to see Kojima trying now to squeeze stories in to that universe where there's still space left in the timeline.

Shell of the designer he used to be.

Man was this game disappointing. I hate what they did to Snake too.

Well, that was just Kojima's way of "subtlety" airing out his current state of mind with himself and series.

It's why Snake was such a hopeful and active person with the world in MGS2, trying to make it a better place and giving the player a ten minute speech trying for a final time to pass the message of MGS2 to the player. Then compare that Snake to the one we find in MGS4 who is dragged back into the fight only to please a long time friend. He's old and doesn't give a shit about the world anymore and would rather die in a ditch than try to do anything about it.

For as many nitpicks or straight up problems I have with this game (which admittedly aren't too many, lucky me I guess) the way Snake's story played out and ended was not one of them. I thought it was really well developed and touching and kinda epic to watch unfold. And for as much sense it did or didn't make, I thought the final concluding moments of the ending were terrific.

I guess I have no sense or taste. MGS4 was mostly a mistake but 1 thru 3, PW, and GZ are still fantastic and all footage of TPP looks great. MGS4s existence doesn't affect them.

Except for that whole AI plot in Peace Walker which was an attempt to bring in the MGS4 storyline of Zero making AI machines to rule the world make more sense, or at least plant the seeds into the storyline.

For those who love this game, weren't you all disappointed after Act 2? They kept teasing us with slivers of awesome gameplay, but it never materialized.

The final act had an amazing stealth sequence, but that was the only one and then more nonsense cutscenes.

This game was just a huge tease. They refined to the controls to something finally decent, but you really don't get to experiment much since its cutscene city.

Yep, all the bad choices they make in 4 taint every other game now.

The truth is, any story/world is going to get stupid/convoluted after enough games (hi Resident Evil) but with Metal Gear Solid 4 they really fast tracked that fact and hammered the final full nails themselves in one whack. Impressive.

Apparently I have no sense or taste. Thanks! :p

PW was excellent considering it was designed from the ground up to work with relatively limited software in mind. It tied the game mechanics into the themes brilliantly, too.

GZ is an excellent addition and, if that and the gameplay vid are anything to go by, TTP is going to be amazing. Gameplay wise, it's the Metal Gear I've always dreamed of.

Then, of course, we have the excellent MGR spin-off, which is magnificent fun.

Sure, MGS4 did a lot wrong (I still played the fuck out of it, mind), but all in all I think one misstep in a series that consistently delivers isn't necessarily a death-knell.

Except for that whole AI plot in Peace Walker which was an attempt to bring in the MGS4 storyline of Zero making AI machines to rule the world make more sense, or at least plant the seeds into the storyline.

I thought it was a brilliant way to do that plus explore BB's loss, which wasn't really covered before.

- Worst boss fights in the series (by a large margin)
- Least interesting bosses
- Worst pacing when it comes to gameplay and cutscenes
- Solid Snake is a depressing aged piece of jerky instead of a wisecracking and angry aged piece of jerky
- Naomi's character arc is fucking lame and dumb to the tenth degree
- Humor is lacking and is a lot more forced
- Overly depressing and drab characterization
- No mystery or intrigue when it comes to technology or what seems to be the supernatural
- Raiden's character development was a lame gray fox attempt
- Vamp's arc is just as lame as Naomi's
- The writing overall feels flat and drawn out to the point of not caring about the mythos
- Drebin and his diaper monkey, I mean its a monkey with a diaper
- Mount Snakemore, jesus christ
- Raiden's breakdancing and mouth combat
- No clear or recognizable themes in the story

Off the top of my head.

This is presented as if it is a statement of actual facts, when in fact it is nothing but your own simple opinion.

People should stop presenting their opinions as if they are facts...

I for one loved the game (not my favorite MGS and yes it has quite a few issues) and disagree with a lot of the above "facts".

Considering there is nothing in your head, not much of this means anything.

I loved MGS 4 up until the Big Boss shit at the end. The part where Snake had just been fried in the microwave hallway, and he looks up and screams "Otacon!!!!". Seriously, was tearing up at that point. Then when Otacon says "Snake had a hard life", it was fucking waterworks. If it ended there I would have been sad for Snake, but satisfied. When BB showed up, I was hoping he had some magic Nanomachines cure that would make Snake young again, and they'd somehow team up for the next game. Instead I got a lecture on binary, Zero in a wheelchair and boredom.

Considering the convolution of MGS started with MGS2, I don't think it's the number of games that caused it. The proof was in the pudding in 2001. MGS4 took that and multiplied it

That Liquid Ocelot Vs Snake fight is arguably my favorite thing in the MGS series. What a powerful cutscene. I honestly i don't hate MGS4 its not the worst but its certainly not the strongest in the franchise.
Fuck that Big Boss CQC hugging, i cried like a baby damn it.

Story's fine up until right before the end of Act 4 after an amazing sequence of events, then it starts a nosedive into the bad with impossible-to-believe feats of strength (even for MGS standards), silly music videos, broken promises, and stupidly long ending cutscenes that go on and on and on until you lose your mind just to learn about the very dumb reason why all this stuff happened. Game should have ended at Act 4 for story's sake. It just crumbled under the weight of needless escalation of epic-ness.

Gameplay and boss fights were awesome though, could have used more of that, as is the case with all MGS games.
