This is presented as if it is a statement of actual facts, when in fact it is nothing but your own simple opinion.

People should stop presenting their opinions as if they are facts...

I for one loved the game (not my favorite MGS and yes it has quite a few issues) and disagree with a lot of the above "facts".

He's 100% accurate.

The Phantom Pain looks redeemable though. It's just a pity that MGS4 exists at all, as it taints every other game. Peace Walker would've been better without the forced connection to MGS4 (but still would've been shitty). Knowing how Big Boss ends up, in the most contrived and moronic possible way, makes me less excited for TPP.

Once you've mastered the controls, you can have so much fun in acts 1 - 3. I list 3 because of the facecamo fun and knocking over patrols in the barrel.

It doesn't read as presenting fact to me, just opinions jotted down in point form. Did you want IMO written in front of all those? Seems unnecessary when it comes across clear enough as it is.

What, does he need to start every sentence with "In my opinion..."?

Its obvious those were his views on the game which are subjective by nature.

I love this game so much, I still can't help but shed a tear every time I reminisce on the events of the game, especially the ending. It's a shame I didn't make time to play MGO more before its eventual demise, as I really enjoyed the multiplayer. Overall, MGS4 will always hold a special place in my heart!

Haha. It's true though, the game killed the series. At least for anyone with sense and taste.

It's sad to see Kojima trying now to squeeze stories in to that universe where there's still space left in the timeline.

Shell of the designer he used to be.
I don't know if my taste is awful, but MGSV looks to be the GOAT of everything ever.

I loved MGS 4 up until the Big Boss shit at the end. The part where Snake had just been fried in the microwave hallway, and he looks up and screams "Otacon!!!!". Seriously, was tearing up at that point. Then when Otacon says "Snake had a hard life", it was fucking waterworks. If it ended there I would have been sad for Snake, but satisfied. When BB showed up, I was hoping he had some magic Nanomachines cure that would make Snake young again, and they'd somehow team up for the next game. Instead I got a lecture on binary, Zero in a wheelchair and boredom.
That would have been the worst idea ever.

Let Kojima be the creative genius.

We will drag these nano machines into 21st century!!!
Sure when you can find flaws into any game if you want and no game is perfect but overall package of MGS4 is fucking good. I love it.

MGS4 is my favorite Metal Gear...there...I said it lol.

But in all seriousness, I really have to give a round of applause to Kojima for accomplishing MGS4. MGS3 was a nice self-contained story, but it provided little background or insight into illuminating MGS1 and MGS2's story lines other than saying that the Philosophers were later called the Patroits.

MGS4 had to carry the narrative weight of tieing up the complicated narrative started in MGS2 (which was not supposed to be taken seriously in the first place), and giving context to MGS3 and its overall importance to the entire story, seeing that MGS3 didn't do that whatsoever. It also had to account for all the history between MGS3 and MGS1 as well.

I loved this game. I stayed up until 7am to complete it and watch all the cutscenes. My wife did to just because we were so caught up in it. That last battle was fucking perfect. After MGS4, I was totally fine with never playing another one.

MGS3 is still my favorite, though, witb MGS1, coming very, very close behind.

Once again, it was an "at the moment" feeling. I already said I wanted it to end before Big Boss even showed up. Not saying it should have ended that way or it would have been a better ending. Although I do think Solid Snake was shortchanged. Was barely in MGS 2 and needed a walker in 4. Damn shame.

I am such a fanboy for MGS4. It's a campy science fiction game with a take-it-or-leave-it flavor that sold because at the end of the day you're still shooting things. And please don't be surprised by MGS4 when trolled with MGS2 - you had to either embrace the crazy or drop metal Gear completely when facing mind-controlling arms, escort sequences with a hostage that takes 40 minutes to explain why water is scary, and hairy armpits. MGS4 is campy as all hell, but man does it cement the seriousness and masturbatory attention to plot detail Kojima clearly always wanted.

I also gotta say, there's really no other AAA series where the creator takes so much energy to curate hype outside of the corporate PR machine to simply fuck with fans. Man I love this series.

The worst MGS game.

MGS = MGS3 > MGS2 > MGS4

Poor storyline/storytelling & poor characters, with some good gameplay hidden in the cracks.

Would you like to explain your opinions, or just say that you disagree and contribute nothing?

This is how every MGS4 thread goes; people tear the game apart with very reasonable complaints, and the defence force offers little more than "i was not bothered by all the flaws" and appeals to popularity.

Hayter's best performance, out of a stellar career.
God I hope Sutherland doesn't screw it up. Some of his line reading is really hit and miss in the trailers... but I guess at least theres some 'hit'... so it can't be complete trash...
Hey, did the old voice cast get gutted in it's entirety? I heard Ocelot's voice got changed too...

Nah, Kaz at least still has the same voice actor, as does Huey and Chico (as of Ground Zeroes anyway). Im guessing any returning Peace Walker cast will retain their VO's, but it looks like everyone else will be new. Ocelot got changed because he's in a weird place, age-wise. Not nearly old enough to sound like OG Ocelot, but too old to sound like Spider-Man. I think Troy Baker will do a good job, he always does. I'm just hoping it won't be too much like Booker or Joel; it would be easy to just put on a gritty tough voice and call it a day but Ocelot is way to cheesy to go in that direction.

Love all the Metal Gear games. Yes I know there a few flaws with the games but I am a fanboy of Metal Gear so I can look past it all.

The story that Kojima has is just so epic.

Seriously, lol. I was very emotional, I can't be held accountable for my feelings!! Is anyone actually glad that the final scene with Big Boss was included?

I kinda hoped Snake would blow his brains out. I thought the FoxDie disease-thingy that turned him into this entry's world-ending weapon was a brilliant twist. I wished they had run with it.

There are plenty of valid reasons to think of it as an awesome game. The gameplay, for starters, was quite exceptional. The visuals and score were great. Despite some sloppy writing the story was still fun and engaging, and I thought Snake's character was wrapped up very well. There's also a plethora of content.

And I'm sure your reasons for not liking the game are completely valid too; only no one seems to be calling you out and it feels like you're saying that the people who like the game are wrong because they haven't been able to personally make you understand why they liked it.

I am. I thought it brought the story and character of Solid Snake full-circle. If Snake had killed himself I probably would have destroyed my PS3 out of disappointment. I'm not saying Big Boss' appearance was anything logical or probable, but neither were most elements of this series going straight back to the original MGS. The original had a dude that could levitate and throw shit around, another dude had a protective flock of ravens that ate at him as he was giving a ridiculous monologue. This has been a ridiculous series from the get go, so I have no idea why people suddenly started asking for more grounding come MGS4.

In context, Big Boss' appearance was pretty par for the course. MGS1 was insane, but MGS2 is where it got completely loopy. I loved it, but for me the series has always been incredibly ridiculous and does whatever the fuck it wants. Perhaps my stance on the previous games is why I was impervious when it came to MGS4's more inane creative choices.

I didn't want him to off himself, but definitely understood him wanting to at that point. Damn, I need to go play this again. That MGS throwback area gave me fucking chills the first time.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Had the game included VR missions to counter the extremely lacking stealth espionage action in the story campaign, I would be more forgiving. On its own, it felt like barely a game with the core design conceit disappearing abruptly seemingly after the tutorials end. Basically it's a shit game.

Wow to the people saying Beauty & the Beasts corps are the worst and least interesting bosses in the series.

Forgetting about Peace Walker much?

Still polarizing on GAF, still a great MGS one of my favorite games ever.

For those who love this game, weren't you all disappointed after Act 2? They kept teasing us with slivers of awesome gameplay, but it never materialized.

The final act had an amazing stealth sequence, but that was the only one and then more nonsense cutscenes.

This game was just a huge tease. They refined to the controls to something finally decent, but you really don't get to experiment much since its cutscene city.

I partly agree with you in that they could've had more playtime with this, but it felt like a lot of that was regulated toward MGO2 to extend the playtime in a way, which is why I wish that version had offline elements since before it shutdown. I was disappointed that MGS4 never got a Substance-like expansion, which made games like MGS2 doubly replayable for me. I might imagine an expansion adding 2 or more Acts that acted like Act 1 & 2, more open spaces and chances to test all of your tech.

For what was in-game, Act 3 was decent change of pace from the first two acts, that was fun to replay in different ways (locating the resistance member across the maps while avoiding PMC troops felt a little like The End fight). In replays, I've ended up approaching the whole tailing thing different ways; the most fun might've been trying to take out all the enemies across the maps, and then tail the guy.

Act 4 changed it more by dealing with tech-only bosses at first, but did get better at the Crying Wolf boss fight. And after the Vamp boss battle, the hype of the fighting felt literally palpable, piloting Rex.

Act 5 was shorter than it should've been (at least the stealth part); I would've to cover the ship the same way the tanker in MGS2 was covered. The Screaming Mantis and (especially) the hand-to-hand battle against Ocelot left playing the game on a high note.

But honestly, despite being shorter than some games (certainly MGS3), having the sometimes ridiculous amount of replayability and experimentation is what makes it fun to go back to.

MGS4 is a fantastic game for us hardcore fans. Unfortunately, it must be impossible to enjoy if you're a newcomer to the series.

Despite series like Final Fantasy that change things up in every numbered sequel, it does surprise me when newcomers start with 4 and feel completely lost, at least in understanding the story. In Metal Gear's case, sometimes I think people expect (or prefer) how CoD does it - different mission, probably very little connection to what was before it.

How is that sad? The only cutscenes I don't skip are the like of Halo and gta. I don't get invested in games stories and prefer to just play.

Everything else gets skipped. Dont take that option away from the customer.

Skel1ingt0n

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
Wait........ .... people skip MGS cutscenes?!

During their first playthrough? WHY?

Peace Walker's bosses were pretty bad yea, I liked them though as they were trying to do something a little different and it was clear what they were going with (as the inspiration literally showed up in the game)

The only B&B fight I liked was Laughing Octopus since that was a throwback to what Kojima wanted to do with Decoy Octopus apparently. Also Mechs don't warrant awful codec calls at the end of them.

Yea, but at least the B&B took the issues of PTSD and really made a great example out of them. Having them be complete copies, I mean be inspired by past bosses was a great idea. Not only that, but having a whole separate phase where the girls pop out of their exoskeleton covered in oil in a skin tight suit, slowly walking to the player as little rose peddles pop out when ever you shoot them really drives the serious message of these girls horrific past home.

Not only that, but you can take pictures of them if you wait long enough watching them crawl to you, getting a whole little mini-game of whipping your camera out and snapping some nice plot shots.

I like the game.

Yeah it's a bit of a movie but there was enough actual gameplay to be enjoyable. The story is melodramatic mess as is the whole franchise but it was overall enjoyable. Also, you get to be part of a metal gear vs metal gear fight.

I can understand when people say they preffer the gameplay in MGS3, it is better. But the story? Really?. Both are a mess but at least MGS4 has a hint of enjoyable drama (only played MGS1 and decided to give the franchise another try after seeing a friend playig the end of MGS4, although I admit that post credits scene is stupid). MGS3 is one of the most cheesy and corny stories I've ever seen in a respected gaming franchise.
With the generic russian guy, the whole "the boss wasn't evil after all, how surprising", those 2 minute long akwards scenes of Ocelot duing his gun thing basically every time he gets a scene, etc, etc

I now have an excuse to post this.

OMG, this so much. There was so much BLOAT in the story line, so much convoluted crap that it was hard to enjoy the good stuff like the Metal Gear battle.

MGS4 was a game I loved every second of when I got it at launch and played it nonstop until I beat it, and then gradually grew to kind of hate as time went on.

I guess hate is a strong word, there are still some parts I enjoy--some of the boss fights, Shadow Moses, some of the gameplay concepts--but the flaws stood out more and more. I say that I loved every second of it the first time I played, but it's worth mentioning that I fell asleep just after Big Boss's part of the ending started and thus missed out on that half hour of garbage till the next day.

I will say it's interesting to think of this as something Kojima was forced to do and didn't really want to, and to think of Snake being old and tired and his general attitude as a reflection of that.

Metal Gear Solid = Awesome.

Metal Gear Solid 2 = Too far up it's own ass.

Metal Gear Solid 3 = Awesome.

Metal Gear Solid 4 = Total clusterfuck.

Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker = Got to the tank boss and it took forever to beat in single player so I never touched it again.

Metal Gear Solid 5 - Hopefully a return to MGS 3 excellence...

I'm playing it for the first time as well, and I just finished Act 1. Can't say I'm feeling the decreased emphasis on stealth in favor of more action oriented setpieces so far, but it was nice seeing familiar faces at the very least. The mission briefing sequence was cool as all hell, too. Still not really liking it as much as I thought I would, though.

I'm told Act 4 is really, really great, so I'm gonna try and stick things out until I get there.
