Yu Suzuki and Mark Cerny talk Shenmue III strategy?!

He did a post mortem of Shenmue at the GDC, I thought there was a part 2? If so, it would be cool if he announces Shenmue 3 after the presentation. Even a kickstarter initiative..

I don't understand how Sega couldn't finish the series with the Yakuza team. It's basically the same style of game so they could use the Yakuza series' engine.

Nope. If Shenmue 3 will ever see the light of day, it will be way, way more bigger and complex than Yakuza. Not only in terms of tech (realtime weather, day/night cycle, open world etc) but also in terms of gameplay with a very high consideration for the details.

If it's kickstarted, then probably not.

I put in Shenmue II over the past weekend and I gotta say, it has aged poorly. Not just graphics, but the delivery of the lines, the animation, the scripting, I mean just about the whole of it. It was pretty painful to realize since I hold these games so close to my heart.

I think rather than get a 3rd game with the first two getting HD releases, it wouldn't be a bad idea to just start it over again with a remake for the first two games AND the third part, all rolled into one game. Go ahead and trim the fat from the first two games as well and make it a more streamlined and focused experience.

I know some of you might call blasphemy, but I think its a legit idea and a good way to get NEW players interested and KEEP them interested rather than trying to get them to play through the old stiff games that can't hold up to the new stuff they're used to playing.

... I don't mind this idea but to be honest, I've been waiting for Shenmue 3 for far too long for that to happen.

Instead, like we've seen in other titles such as resident evil, it is best to go straight to 3 then they can look back and improve the previous versions later. Hopefully, by then, the audience would increase enough to really warrant the massive upgrade of the previous, and if you and I are thinking on the same lines, those upgrades will definitely not be visuals alone (even the arcade centres in the game should have more games to play with).

I agree to some extent, of course I still think it was amazing for its time.

The whole HDification thing...it would have to be redone from scratch at this point regardless. I just don't see how adapting the old code could be any easier than rebuilding it in something like UE4, or whatever. Fortunately the game isn't anywhere near as large as, say GTA, in terms of assets. But that also gives you opportunities to refine things, like the controls which I think are a little stiff by today's standards.

Geographically it might not be as big but Shenmue is pretty high in terms of density.

It's probably better just to take the Shenmue IP out back and put a bullet in it, put it out of its misery. Sega doesn't have the money for a project this costly and they don't have the personnel to get it done, to attempt it would be suicide.

Protip: not everything this man does revolves around Shenmue.

Do you never tire of the endless little deaths you suffer from every single time your hopes and dreams are crushed?

Freaking Sega never released it on a PS platform and then moan about low sales. It's like "dude, there are a ton of PlayStation owners who never played it because they never owned a dreamcast or a Xbox." Tons of potential customers on ps2 and they never release for it.

Yup

The dream never dies, my friend. As longs as crumbs like this keep popping up, the hope of a new Shenmue will continue to be fed.

Killing it is going a bit far. I'd settle for an emulated re-release. There are a lot of gamers who only know of Shenmue by name or have a curiosity about it, and they should have the chance to experience it in a practical and affordable manner.

Really? I played shenmue 2 first after getting an original Xbox, not knowing what it was I saw the boxart (and me being an anime fan the style of it was really appealing) when I was 9 and had to have it. I remember thinking the graphics looked pretty good (not as good as Halo environments but the human models were definitely better). But the voice acting, and the regular animations like walking around, people emoting with their hands to me at the time were so hilariously bad they were charming. I mean who can't remember the hilarious way the arm wrestling dude at the docks would scream "DAYUM!" in bewilderment.

That's why I think a sequel could go a long way in this day and age, getting passionate people in every department to deliver a polished product. The best parts to me were the interactions between the characters who had VA's that understood their characters as well. Rather than an actor who only got paid by the localization team to read a few NPC lines.

I know i'm stirring the pot of dreams and fantasies, but can you imagine all the Shenmue series with Uncharted 4 graphics? Combined with improved voice overs, easier play mechanics, improved need for improvement and being rewarded for your efforts system, more gifts, more games in the arcade centers, and some extra side stories here and there... Also, if we allow all the scripted fight scenes to be choreographed by Donnie Yen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCPMRzP86YM) I think everyone including myself would blow up! Imagine Lan Di fighting like Donnie Yen, which will be appropriate to be honest.

Look at the pic below to entice your fantasies:

I sure hope if 3 is made they redo 1-2 so that I remember a fucking thing.

If it ever came back they would have to do this. The idea they're going to just continue the story after a 15 year break or whatever the hell it is now is beyond crazy.

Also its never coming back. People just need to accept this.

Can we just stop? How about we just stop so my heart doesn't have to hurt anymore.

Shenmue GDC post-mortem was the final nail for me. That was the last reasonable shot we had for an announcement. I've given up hope, so it's not the longing for seeing Shenmue 3 that hurts... I'm done with that. What hurts is seeing you guys still being constantly disappointed.

Let it go, it feels much better.

Do you see that jacket he's wearing?

I'm pretty sure Shenmue III is Yu Suzuki's life. I'm gonna follow him around and see how the series ends.

I really hope not. I'd rather have the spirit of the old games to be about Ryo's journey than super realistic graphics. Besides, that would take too long to develop and I want it NOW.

But he stopped at Shenmue 1. You know what that means right?

I never played the games. give me the run down on Shenmue and why people are so eager to see a third game.

Think of it like this.

The series starts with some heavy, intense and meticulously detailed world building. You grow up emotionally and in skills, and set sail for a big adventure. You work towards your goals in a foreign land, meeting people and building on the character and lore proposed.

...and then a MAJOR twist happens. A bizarre, beautiful, intriguing twist that busts the doors of what's possible in the story wide open.

And there ends Shenmue 2.

Not to oversell it, but it's everything: An adventure game, a simulator, a fighter, a racing game, a QTE game, all wrapped up in a murder mystery story with awesome graphics and music.

Keep in mind it predates GTA 3 and just about every 3D open world game.

We'll see PlayStation 5 before we see Shenmue III, if we ever see Shenmue III at all that is.

if something comes of this i'm quite sure it will be a reboot, no sense whatsoever in starting from Part 3 when only the gaming grandfathers have played the previous chapters :D
