SNES Game Collecting (Tips, discussion, and info for like minded collectors)

The Goodwill store in Dallas has had this baby on the shelf for about a month. It was $175, but it has been slowly dropping week after week. They also have Yoshi's Island for the SNES for $20.

Last week, I finally decided to do something with the organization and presentation of my SNES and N64 collection. SNES carts have been loose and in a small Rubbermaid case for decades, and the N64 titles have been in some nice plastic cases, a couple of huge crappy Performance cases, and loose for years. No more! Grabbed the artwork from The Cover Project and some Universal Game Cases to clean them both up!

Wish someone would make these case but in black rather than the white fogged plastic :(

Recently went to a toy convention here in northern California and picked up Final Fantasy II and III. $80 for the pair, and they were both in really good condition (although cartridges only). I don't know what it was exactly, but this had re-ignited my love for the SNES to the point where I now want to both build my library even bigger than the 27 or so games I have now and to also clean up the presentation of them a bit.

I managed to get a copy of Chrono Trigger (a crime this wasn't a part of my collection to begin with really) with instructions and a players guide for about $100 on an ebay auction earlier last week. Along with that, I also purchased my first custom case from Retrogamingcases on ebay (original boxart design), just kind of to see if I liked the quality of them. Happy to say both came in time for the weekend. I cleaned up the game nicely (seller didn't seem to bother), and after putting it in it's very nice case, I was thrilled with the full package. Slowly but surely I will be getting cases for the rest of my games, as well as instruction manuals for the few that don't have them.

Also really glad I got my SNES mini RGB modded when I bought my Sony PVM late last year. All these games look even better than I remember them now.

not that i am aware of, though i remember some other company is making a new type of ugc except in black. i belive it was discussed previously in this thread.

I wish Time Walk Games didn't stop making games. Having full cases and manuals is something I really wanted.

Guess I wish more that I got off my ass and pulled the trigger on the games I wanted from them before they closed.
I have one Time Walk repro of Earthbound Zero and was very very disappointed by the amateurish quality of everything. The cart was cheaply painted red (with a heavy paint smell to it). The manual is full of errors and looks nothing like a real NES manual, the box is made of a cheap, thick cardboard, the map that came with it was super low-res and printed on cheap paper. Everything about it was just plain bad and if that was a good example of their repro's then I can't imagine them having many happy customers.

Painting carts just isn't cool. I have an Everdrive "Deluxe" and it's the same damn thing. I would have paid extra to just not have them bother spraying it down with Krylon. It stank, and I ended up making my own shell.

And the smell does not go away, at least in the couple of years I've owned them. I keep them in their containers to keep the odor out. Fun as they are to play with, cracking open the boxes sure isn't.

Well that does away with a good part of my regret, thanks. :3

I had some decent goodwill finds maybe 8 or 9 years ago, but those days are long gone.

Could just be "I had some good finds maybe 8 or 9 years ago, but those days are long gone". It has seriously been a while since I've found anything really good out in the wild for a good price. Everyone checks ebay, or they get swamped by resellers who buy everything.

I find good stuff periodically at dedicated local game stores for good prices, but never at flea markets or Goodwills or garage/yard sales(though admittedly I rarely check these out). And yet I see people post on the internet their awesome finds, it kind of perplexes me

Resellers are assholes and I hope they get what's coming to them.

If you're just selling your collection, that's cool. If you're selling or trading or whatever, that's fine. .. But where does it leave us enthusiasts when the sellers are buying from the sellers so they can sell it for more than the previous seller was selling for.... These guys will hit every joint in town, regularly, like it's their job, because it IS their money maker.

It completely takes the fun out of buying anything if I can't stumble across a good deal, or just stumble across some good games on occasion.

Someone in this thread, or maybe it was another. They were raving about videogameimports.com or something like that... So I go there... these assholes.. these import selling assholes are the reason I had such a hard time stumbling across anything good while living in Japan!.... I mean, I did.. I filled out my cartridge only collection 600 or so strong, all at great prices from junk shops... But it was hard, and it seemed to become more difficult over the 3 years I lived there.

Anyway, I go on the hunt for the thrill of possibly finding nostalgic treasures. I don't do it to make money.. I didn't really think about it this way at the time, but as it becomes harder to find much of anything, it really upsets me that ebay is saturated with games, some of them even broken up into manual, box, cart auctions just to be more profitable. Not... cool. :(

Actually, I want a modded mini for S-video. My CRT TV does not support RGB, unless there is an RGB to Component converter with excellent picture quality out there, then RGB is also an option. I will check the serial number of the SNES I own and then post here. I may have the 1CHIP version without me knowing, though my SNES does have the white light beam in the middle.

If you're sticking with S-video, I'm not sure the quality gain is going to be worth it for the money you'll have to spend to get a mini and have it modded, particularly since most pre-modded units are modded for RGB only; people don't seem to bother with S-video unless requested. Someone here might be able to advise whether S-video on the mini would be worth it. There are good RGB to Component converters out there. You might also want to consider a component modded SNES if you have component input on your TV.

I hope someone responds that can tell you the supposed downsides to the 1-chip revisions since I'm not really clear on them. Also I am sure there are differences between the standard 1chip console and a rgb/svideo modded mini snes, but not sure about the specific details. Think it has something to do with the rgb amp inside the standard console, and you can bypass it to get the same quality of a modded mini, but once again, not positive.

As for s video, much like rgb, the standard SNES already supports it but the mini would need it modded in.

The downsides seem to be a matter of preference (some people want the blurriness of the original SNES because they believe that was how it was intended to be) and some glitches that can occur in the model 2s in certain games.

I don't see any striking differences in picture comparisons between the regular 1CHIP and the mini.
Eg:
I use a regular 1CHIP (an 02 revision), and get great colour and sharpness already, with no vertical line present. If I find a reasonably priced mini I will get one and RGB mod it for kicks, but for now I'm happy. The external mod amp indeed is supposed to produce the same quality of the mini but I also haven't seen any comparisons of that either.

Hmmm im not sure its worth getting a mini if its just going to be for S-Video and the Tv doesnt actually support RGB. In this case any SNES revision would do

I agree. If you're short on funds I'd just use what you have until you want to go for RGB. No point going for a partial upgrade IMO.

As well, if you don't have a REALLY fine soldering tip and very fine wires, it's very difficult to do the RGB mod to the SNES Mini. Pictures really don't do justice to the smallness of the legs you're soldering to.

I've read that it deals with the white line problem if you have it, but not sure if that was ever verified.

If you mean money, then yeah, they will get what's coming to them. If you mean some comeuppance for dicking up a hobby, then no, the world doesn't really work that way. I vent from time to time about it, but I know there is really nothing that can be done or will happen about resellers.

I've read that too, but I've also read that it remains even with the mod, so I'm not sure what to think. Thankfully the line isn't visible on mine, no matter how hard I try to make it appear.

Perhaps the mod reduces the visibility of the line, meaning it disappears on most systems but would still be faintly visible on those that are affected particularly badly.

I've never actually seen the line on any of my systems, but most of them are Super Famicoms. It could also be that PVMs hide them somewhat.

Santa Rosa two weekends ago actually. Usually toy shows (at least the ones I've been to) don't have a big game presence, but I actually got a decent haul at this one. Also got a few NES games and Final Fantasy VII on playstation. If you're near Alameda though, there is a really good game store there; a bit pricey, but has a lot of game rarities.

I suspect the RGB modded mini is a bit brighter than the 1-Chip, but I haven't seen a 1-Chip in person myself to confirm that. All I know is that with my mini, I have to turn down the contrast a bit to match my other RGB equipped consoles.

That brightness difference would probably depend on which level ohm resistors were used in the mini RGB mod. People who have used 75ohm resistors have made the same comments on brightness, and others for this reason prefer 100ohm or even higher.

Heh. Funny to see this still happens once in a blue moon. I got a copy of Earthbound about two or so years ago at Goodwill for 50 cents.

Geez-and I was happy to pick up a Earthbound for 130.00 recently.....

Oh well, there's always the chance Ill find a Harvest Moon, or E.V.O, or Hagane, or one of the other countless number of games that have skyrocketed in price. The best thing that ever happened to me was finding and FF3 for 2.00 at a Goodwill when I lived in San Francisco. Everyday before work, Id scan there electronics and game section.

I bought Hagane at a random video store that was closing down for $5 some years back. I had no idea how much it was worth. Crazy.

It does not. At least the systems I have show it very clearly on both my PVM and BVMs.Have non 1chip revisions.

Interesting. I guess I got lucky with my SNES systems then.

I think I was just trying to find a reason why I couldn't see it, since people seem to swear black and blue that it's on all SNES systems, and if you can't see it, you aren't looking hard enough. I've looked plenty hard lol.

If that's the case, where can I get an RGB to Component converter, and also a modded SNES? Will see what the prices are for both.

Also, I feel like I am buying SNES games at the worst time possible. I am honestly worn out on all of these high prices, that I only want to rely on my flashcart, but I don't want that to happen. Having a good collection is nice and all.

From the threads that I've seen about it there seem to be a bunch of people like you as well, that have just never had it on any of their systems and didn't even realize it exists. It isn't something that is subtle when its there either, it is notable on any black screen.

I had mine modded by Baphomet here on GAF, and I think he said he used like 68ohm resistors, so mine might even be slightly brighter than most. The adjustments I have to make on my monitor weren't that severe though, so I got it looking perfect in spite of that.

Quick question for everybody!

I recently won 7k. I decided to save most of it as I am a recent grad but am going to splurge on one item. The decision is between a boxed Chrono Trigger or a boxed Earthbound.

Which of those two should I go with?

I think there are some things we can do.

- First of all, don't splurge on purchases from resellers. Always hunt a lower price.
- Deal with your local community, such as Neogaf buy/sell/trade, other website communities. Don't give power to resellers.
- I saw someone oust a reseller on craigslist, with the title RESELLER ALERT!

It'd be great if there was a universal club for enthusiasts/collectors, that could keep people in the know and put pressure against resellers.

Congratulations! I'd go Chrono Trigger, personally, but try shopping around in the buy/sell/trade thread. Advertise that you're looking for a boxed copy with a WTB post.

Final Fantasy III, not even close.
Wow, complete Final Fight 3 is worth $200-plus now? SNES price inflation indeed. I got that game complete for $1 back in '07 (no, the place I got that game and some other less valuable stuff had no idea some SNES games have value :p), and knew it was valuable then, but I doubt it was over $50 or $60 or something then, nowhere near where the price has gone since...

... And looking up the other stuff I got there, most are not particularly valuable (that is, worth far more than I paid then of course, but not huge amounts), but The Peace Keepers is a $150-$200 game complete, now? And the other one from there that's expensive now is Spike McFang. No way would that game be worth $130 complete! SNES price inflation...
