that puzzling face
I would take any news coming from Ukrainian or Russian sources with a grain of salt unless internationally corroborated.

Too much political motivation going on in that region to get a fair, unbiased report.

Wow, they thought it was an AN-26 and shot it down.

This is what they had to say about it (the vid was originally uploaded as AN-26 shot down but changed to the Boeing with the addendum in the post)

As was declared in numerous times due to constant crimes committed by fascist Ukrainian aviation all territory of Donetsk and Luganks Peoples Repulbics are declared by local government as no-fly zone. Looks like this Boeing was see as military Ukrainan An-26 and thus was downed.

P.S. this video was updated as at the beginning was expected that this is a video of fascist Ukrainain An-26. Condolences to relatives of all passengers. But everyone should know, that violent crimes against humanity committed by Ukrainian government give full right to declare territory of Donetsk and Lugansk Peoples Republics as no fly zone.

This. I know everyone is interested in learning more ASAP, but we need to wait until we get some independent verification.

Russia won't explain shit. It's about time everyone just shut them out completely and just banned all trading with them. That government has no place in the modern world.
That's really would should be done but will probably never happen because of all the Gas the EU buys from Russia.

Knowing a good amount of pilots, I highly doubt the crew ignored any airspace rules. This is likely on Russia. Shits about to get real

You're right, my bad for assuming they had the airspace on lockdown. Judging from that picture of where it went missing, seems there are few restrictions for commercial aircraft.

Is there an airspace restriction for how high they are flying? There must be a reason for this plane to have been shot down and not any others

That image from Flightradar is interesting, looks like they lost contact with plane quite a distance from a crash site. So something had to happened between last point of contact and crash site.

I just woke up, groggily checked twitter on my phone and shot out of bed.

If this is an accident, it happened in the worst possible place it could have.

Jesus Christ! This is so surreal. Another Malaysian airplane down, this time fucking shot out of the air? If this was because of Russia, then the shit just hit the fan.

This actually happened? Terrible, horrible.

And we still have no idea what happened to the other Malaysian flight. NONE. So fucked up.

Agreed. We need to take a step back and wait for more information.

Damn... my country and our citizen's are in for another round of shock. Why does something so tragic of this scale happens 2 time in a year. This is what happens when you arm rebels and extremists that have no intention of spreading peace and instead achieving their objectives through mindless force and violence and are trigger happy...

Taxes?! Isn't this the line for Metallica?
Can a passenger plane even detect incoming missiles? Like would they have even had a shot at some sort of evasive maneuvers? I know 777s don't exactly turn on a dime...
I don't know, but I remember at one time there was discussion of adding counter-measures to commercial aircraft for added protection, but the probability of such a scenario was too low compared to the costs so it was not implemented.

It could have saved a few lives today :(

Take evasive actions when it's picked up on sensors?

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure it's not easy for a huge passenger plane to avoid a modern targeted missile. Especially from pilots who have no military experience, and probably don't have the equipment on board to detect missiles. But again, I could be wrong.

I really hope that when this is all done and over with, the EU politicians put together a plan to minimise the exposure we have to Russia, and to sort it out so that the EU can actually defend itself.

BBC is reporting it was shot down...

"Anton Herashchenko, an adviser to Ukraine's interior minister, was quoted by the Associated Press as saying the plane had been hit by a missile at an altitude of 10,000m (33,000ft)."
