NPD Sales Results for June 2014 [Up3: All Hardware (June/LTD), Top 10 Software SKUs]

Nintendo's Pro Bono PR Firm
I can't really see Wii Sports Club having any sort of impact either seeing as it doesn't seem like Nintendo is putting any real power behind it like they did with MK8.

Who knows though...maybe it can surprise us if Nintendo is clever with the game's marketing campaign and it catches on through word of mouth...
:/

Unlikely, but a girl can dream right?
No chance. But the good news is, people will buy a Wii U for Mario Kart 8. The bundle still exists, doesn't it?

Happiest NPD result ever.
PS4 on top. WiiU likely being neck and neck with XBone which means the XBone is getting blown out by the WiiU worldwide.

This is all I ever asked for. Especially since it's a price cut month for the BoneBox.

Do we have any idea yet whether the Wii U outsold the Xbox One?

Surprised at how high the Wii U sales are this month, nice to see the system have some positive news even if it doesn't hold up.

We need creamsugar to provide us with his cryptic number riddles....:)

We know already that Xbox One > Wii U.

If the price drop didn't do it, I expect we'll see some good Xbox One bundles this fall. NPD isn't exactly the source of surprises these days.

so much for the console industry dying, when Nintendo is pulling in the numbers you just know things are looking good for the future as a console gamer.

MK8 was almost surely the highest software SKU, then. I hope.
Fantastic! The Luigi Death Stare drives sales... is what we can say anecdotally with zero actual evidence. There's also no way to quantify this, but maybe there's a weird "nostalgia bump" for Nintendo? A new console MK instantly triggers fond memories of playing the others. When their numbers were so dead every month it's not hard to find something that's a "bump", I figure.

We know already that Xbox One > Wii U.
Well you're no fun at all!

Where's all the doom and gloom coming from then? It's not a massive difference

One console always has to win, that's how it works

360 sold around 41.5M of its WW total of 83.7M in the US

PS3 only sold around 26M of its WW total of ~84M in the US

US is a far far more important market to MS than to Sony historically

Is it possible that Wii U HW sales may decrease by 50% this month or will it stabilize above 125k thanks to Mario Kart 8?

Wii over 100k?!! 140k to be precise!!

This is huuuuuuuuuuuuge. First time ever it's over 100k outside Nov-Dec. First time ever Wii U beats the GameCube (monthly).

This is cause for celebration. Where's that gif of Nintendo guys in squids?

Wii U is hitting its stride.

I think we estimated the Xbox (At doubling) at around 144k based on estimates last month. And if the Wii U is at 140k... then damn close. But not sure now since that wasn't readily posted by now.

Nintendo's problem for the next six months is two-fold:

1) Does anything they're releasing have the potential to bring in players that would not already own the system the way Mario Kart did?

2) Does the 3DS hurt the Wii U by offering cheaper alternatives to a lot of the same experiences?

(The answers are no and yes, respectively, if you're curious.)

Now, the silver lining for them here is that they still might do okay. Even if they're not massively increasing the install base (guessing ~60k is the new average until November), if they're getting Wii U owners to finally buy software and pick up what they're releasing this fall, it's a good thing for them. Keep in mind, when I say it's a good thing, I mean it's an extremely relative good thing, but it's a good thing all the same.

They have to take this lesson to heart and come out in 2015 with a steady stream of games to keep people interested. Don't just crowd the latter half of the year as if it's the only part that matters.

The answer to 2 should be clearly given by SSB 4.

Get back to me when Sony wins over 2 years in a row straight of NPD numbers.

Hell, I'm just glad Sony is announcing NPD numbers now, and that the Sony fan is excited for NPD numbers these days as well!

Is the US market that important to Nintendo? Looking at the Media Create charts, it seems like Nintendo dominates in Japan (3DS at least) or is the Wii U just losing so much money across the board that it drags the rest of the company down.

That's right!

GameCube (June 2003) - 123K

Wii U (June 2014) - 140K

Oh wow...that is special.

One console always has to win, that's how it works

Because:
1. It's a +20% difference already
2. The gap has been steadily increasing since launch
3. One of MS's biggest 2014 exclusive, numerous temporary price drops, and Kinect removal and price parity have done sweet fuck all to prevent 2.

The top 10 chart for the past year just makes me feel real sad. Did we have NPD back in like 2001 or around there? I'd like to go back and see how different the landscape looked.

Here's *JULY* 2001:
Code:
1	PS2	Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec $50 Sony 573,296	NEW
2	GBA	Super Mario Advance $30 Nintendo	138,604 / 517,721
3	PS2	NBA Street $51 EA 124,594	/ 275,756
4	PS2	NCAA Football 2002 $52 EA 121,216	NEW
5	GBA	Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 $40 Activision	72,840	/ 233,513
6	DC	Sonic Adventure 2 $41 Sega 71,259	/ 186,112
7	PSX	Final Fantasy Chronicles $41 Square EA	71,180	/ 125,720
8	PS2	Twisted Metal: Black $51 Sony 69,806	/ 242,394
9	PSX	Gran Turismo 2 $21 Sony 58,349	/ 2,362,667

I gotta say yes to 2. I bought a 3DS and mario kart, 3d land are right there and on the cheap with smash bros on the horizon. In addition to what has to be the single greatest year for games on a single system in the last decade, 2013, number 2 is definite reality.

So I take this will finally shut up everyone who was inferring that people would buy the XB1 over the PS4 if they were the same price?

Yep, MS don't have as much of Europe or Japan to fall back on if they lose marketshare in the US and NA.
