Will drop pants for Sony.
Wow system prices were so cheap. I remember saving up to buy the n64. It was a painful few weeks. Nowadays I could walk right in and just buy it without a second thought.

After the N64 came out and there was only Mario and Wave Race to play, we got a cassette tape (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0i_SI63I70) in the mail from Nintendo. It was mostly about Star Fox and it did a number on me, getting me excited for that game. I don't think I've ever been so hyped for a game in my life (well maybe FF7, but that's another story for another thread). I must have watched that tape a hundred times. It also had previews for other 64 games like Goldeneye and Cruisin' USA. And the rumble pack!! Man was I excited for that.

Point being, yeah, I remember staring at pics in gaming magazines and just imagining what the game would play like. And that excitement of going to the video store and seeing a brand new game on the shelf that you didn't know was coming out. It makes me sad that my kids will never get to experience that.
Those were amazing the few times they got put out. They really hyped the hell out of the rumble pak with that tape. I also remember a Diddy Kong Racing tape, and I think there was one for DK64. Great times!

Thought I'd look up some of the new ads for toys r us and oh...

Oh wow! I remember this exact Ad

My parents would get these ads and have us circle the things we were interested in. Great memories.

Edit* Also those $70 SNES games...lol. Amazing what we were paying for games at the time.

I miss game slips..:(

Man, that brings back memories of going with my father to TRU and picking up Genesis games. Such wonderful memories. I still remember the smells, and bringing the paid slip to the counter where they bring the games was so exciting.

Low System prices were subsidized back in the day with high game prices.

Now the reverse seems to be happening. Hardware makers seem to be trying to profit on day 1 while software makers are losing their collective asses.

In the last 25 years, they haven't been able to change the perception that games are worth more than $60 so now we get half a game for that price and you need to pony up another $60 if you want the other half (DLC)

yeah, i paid +$80 for Ocarina of Time when it came out. When i bought Megaman X for $20 well after MMX2 came out it was like buying a $5 steam game today, it felt so cheap. Mind you, im sure if you take inflation into account those prices look even crazier.

Carts were mad expensive, yo.

I vividly remember Toys R Us here in Sweden selling Donkey Kong Country 3 for something like $130. I thought it was ridiculous even back then. Sonic 2 was still going for $60 around that time as well.

I also remember an electronics chain selling Tony Hawk for PS1 around the late 90's or early 00's for close to $100. I always thought non-specialized retailers selling video games mostly preyed on the ignorance of parents to squeeze out some extra bucks.

I swear, I never paid $60 for a video game before the 360/PS3 era. I remember buying Conkers, Paper Mario, and Perfect Dark day one and spending $50.

I was just telling my friend about how this worked on Saturday. You make me so nostalgic.

It always felt so special back in the 16bit days, getting that slip and taking it to the dude in the back and having him grab one for you.

Me being a little kid: "I miss cartridges"

Me today buying my own games: "Thank goodness the cartridge days are over."

Seeing the prices between N64 and PlayStation, I knew which one I would've picked.

SNES pad - $15
Genesis pad - $15
PS1 pad - $25
Saturn pad - $35

When the fuck did it become the norm to charge $60+ for a controller?

I've said it many times, I can't believe how astronomical the price of controllers has become. $60 for a DS4 is offensive.

$34.99 for Donkey Kong Land 2. Accounting for inflation 3DS games may actually be cheaper.

DKL2 was worth every penny though.

They have significantly more technology in them these days

Also, Gameboy Games were almost the same price as the HARDWARE. Crazy.

More tech is relative to the time though. While there is much more to controllers today, it's also 2014, not 1993.

I never knew the PSX had an analog joystick peripheral. Anybody here get that thing? What'd you use it with?

First I've ever even seen the thing. It's strange even seeing the original psx controller since I replaced it with the analog version that had a button that had a red led when you switched to analog mode. While it's nice that games have gotten cheaper, man do I miss the days when controllers were cheaper than the games themselves.
