Oh! I really thought the original went bad at the end and that's even before the weird movie happened. Brotherhood is so much better in its entirety.

To be fair, FMA was one of the contributing factors I got into Jpop. I doubt Brotherhood could beat the OPs/EDs of the original. Like I said, I didn't finish Brotherhood, but the original had some good arcs and had a great character arc for Mustang; probably my favourite FMA character.

Its incredibly catchy and memorable, that other digimon song that plays in some episodes though (hey digimon).

I... I didn't even know about that one.

I weep for you all you victims of that US version release.

Qiang has a pretty sad back story. Diao is fearing she'll be left behind and ultimately alone again. Qiang leaves to go to Wei to get her just deserved revenge

Hitsugi No Chaika -

I don't think I'd have watched this show beyond the first episode were it not for the positive impressions that fellow gaffers put out there for the later parts of the series. Truly glad that I went through and finished it. Thanks for keeping me from missing out on this one guys and here's to Season 2 in the fall!

Now to start some summer shows ...

Yes Chaika turned out to be really cute and a fun, if short, adventure. At least more is coming!

6-10 right now is:
Steins; Gate, Welcome to NHK, Madoka Magica, Utena, Chihayafuru
but thats always flux. It is difficult to choose.

Isn't Haibane Renmei that mecha show? Interesting.

Also, I googled Gunsmith Cats and holy shit it's full of lewdness. :lol

Haibane Renmei is... not a mecha show. It's very good, though. It's sort of like a fantasy show with elements of drama.

*high five*

The German soundtrack is so good, I argue even better than the Japanese one. The lead singer(s)... so good:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yGOW365j_Y

And then there's the abomination that's the US soundtrack (and where ever else it was used). I just... you cannot possibly have as good of an experience with the show if the original soundtrack is missing. Why you'd possibly replace most of the great tracks with this one atrocity... I just can't...
Oh yes!

Mustang had his share in Brotherhood and arguably a more satisfying ending.

Bhahaha. Interesting thought.

some dub movie soundtracks retain the original music. others replace it with Disturbed.

the Digimon movie replaces it with Barenaked Ladies.

i think it's obvious what's superior here.

Ah found an older post of my concerning the Digimon soundtrack. It lists some more great tracks.

Oh, seeing Digimon mentioned here... yeh. As I'm from Germany I was fortunate enough to get an unbelievably good dub of the Japanese tracks, as opposed to what people got in the US and some other places.

Wir drehen auf (German version)
Break Up (Japanese version)

And for the others just the German versions:
Jetzt ist es soweit
Der größte Träumer
Leb deinen Traum
Digimon 02 German Opening
Wir werden siegen (well that's the Digivolve theme or how you wanna call it)

I've linked these before and it seems like some of them have been blocked thanks to GEMA. But dunno, maybe their accessible outside of the Germany and via proxies/unblockers.

e:
These tracks can you get you so pumped and have all really good lyrics as well, quite inspiring/motivating.

Overall that show is one that really excels at teaching kids about friendship etc.

Ah nice, I was about to make another list, but this is even nicer.

But I might add some insert songs like Wenn die Sonne untergeht and Unsere Digiwelt.

Oh fuck you Mamoru, I'll have no guilt tripping from you, you fucking snake!

Lots of angst, Mamoru going "YOU THOUGHT YOU HAD A TOKYO FRIEND, BUT IT WAS I, MAMORU!", creepy old man being creepy old man with Quon. I really feel bad for that scientist assistant lady, she seems to have nobody non-shady to confide in and/or vent to, so her (sexual) frustrations just keep bottling up. She needs a psychologist visit.

Scratch that, almost everyone in this show needs one.

Came for the Watanabe (and likely god-tier Kanno score), stayed for the reasonably interesting story, great characterizations, and, yes definitely, godly music.

Actually looking forward to ep4 to see where the story is going. Would almost say I'm hooked. Maybe another episode or two if they continue at this quality.

That reminds me that I need to watch Gunsmith Cats and Chihayafuru. Maybe I'll get to those after I finish Love Lab.

I kind of hated Albert's characterization in the show. But then, the book is one of my favorites.

I'll have to finally read the book after the show. There is already lots of stuff that I don't remember from movie adaptations and want to see if it's their addition or how things went in original. (Granted I don't remember much from movies beyond the basics.)

To be fair, both have fantastic openings.

Haibane Renmei | Bokurano

They don't have anything to do with each other, I just don't want to miss an opportunity to post the Bokurano opening.

Bokurano's opening was the best part of it for me, actually. I wasn't a big fan of the rest of the show. I thought it ran out of steam fairly early on. Still a couple good moments towards the end, but I can't really recommend it.

Log Horizon 23-25

The Scale Festival got off to a rough start with that dumb cake buffet, but it developed into a nice little economic crisis with a conclusion that promised plenty of excitement in the future. Particularly, I like the idea of running up against an antagonist whose information network and ingenuity at exploiting the world's rules rivals Shiroe's mastery. Even if how she behaves towards him is kinda... well...

Anyway, it wasn't super interesting on its own, but it was a good way to build out the world and demonstrate the growth with some of the other characters. Shiroe's reluctance to put himself in a public-facing role (the reason he's so willing to sacrifice his own image) could have consequences down the road.

Akatsuki's arc still feels a little undercooked, in that I feel like a piece is missing in terms of how her relationship with Shiroe has developed. I hear there's light novel material immediately after the anime ends that's supposed to help. We'll see, I guess.

Log Horizon - Series

I'd put down my thoughts about it before in response to Jexhius, and I don't think they've changed that much. Log Horizon doesn't have the kind of easy action hooks or save-the-world urgency of a lot of modern light novel adaptations. Most combat in the show is largely incidental, and when it's represented, it isn't particularly interesting. I've seen that this makes it tough for some people to get into.

Where the show really succeeds is in its worldbuilding and politics. It doesn't just drop people in an MMO world and leave it at that; it explores how such a world would have to function to actually support life. In that sense, it's about an online community of players turning into a living society of people, gradually building an economy, a government, and relationships with the existing outside world. What it lacks in moment-to-moment direction, it makes up for in big picture attention to detail. All the rules of the world are given space to breathe and demonstrate themselves before they become important. Every character in the expansive cast has a role to play in every story. There are even fun easter eggs going on in the background, such as the group of player-killers from episode 2 who keep popping up in Akihabara, going about their lives as citizens of this new city. The show didn't have to include them, and it's respectful enough not to rub those moments in the audience's face.

For me, Log Horizon feels like a show that could have existed on Toonami back when it was an afternoon block (which makes sense, considering it aired at a similar time on Japanese TV). Characters are mostly sketched as broad archetypes with cartoony quirks, and lewdness and violence are kept to a minimum. I really enjoyed how wholesome the show felt, and how most of the character development wasn't about people becoming stronger, but about people gaining the confidence to stand up for themselves and work towards the things they thought were important. And given how often online communities disintegrate into arguments and petty fighting, it was nice to watch a kind of 'online community' come together thanks to the hard work of the people at the center.

I really enjoyed it. It'd have a good chance at making my top 10 if I watched it last year. I hope that after reading my review, you'd have a good idea if it's for you or not.

I know I'll be slipping back into the database this fall.

Beautiful. Incredible. A masterpiece of animation.

Full impressions coming later. I have to recover from this now.

I will say this though. It's wonderful that this show has no sequel. The ending to this was perfect. Though they at least could have shown
Holland and Talho's newborn son after the time skip >_< but whatever.

This is fun. Everything in the production gives an infectious energetic vibe, likewise with Doremi herself. Of course what jumps at me instantly is that the funny expressions are actually funny and that the motion stylization is creative, Umakoshi the god, etc etc. but it's really the charm of it. Snappy dialogue, fun directing and good music don't hurt at all either.

The episode was mostly laying down some basic characterization and the setup, obviously, so they didn't have the chance to do much cool stuff, but I can feel the potential.

Hmm, that link appears to be broken. It leads to a page that doesn't exist.

Yup. Doesn't exist at all.

this attempt at a joke wasn't funny when the first person did it for the first unpopular sequel, and it's not funny when you do it either one million times later, suck it up, say "i don't like the sequel" and move on with your life

tamerlane's 2001 post (which I wrote a huge response to and then the internet ate it when I hit post :( ) inspired me to revisit a film I last saw probably over ten years ago and has probably escaped most people's attention (unjustly, I should say) - Studio 4C's Princess Arete.

In short, it's a medieval fantasy about a clever princess locked in her castle tower until she can be married off to her father's chosen suitor, and her eventual triumph over the fearsome immortal sorcerer who imprisons her in his own castle. More importantly, the film is about the power of human creativity and imagination.

My understanding is that the story is heavily changed from the original fairy tale (see this paper, which I read a few years ago, for more detail, although be wary of spoilers) although that's hardly to its detriment as it treats all characters fairly and intriguingly. It's a fairly simple fairy tale but a pleasant and entertaining story nonetheless; the middle third drags a bit in my opinion as it's a little excessively reflective and docile in pacing, which is understandable given plot events but not as entertaining as the rest of the film.

The visual design of the film is true medieval European fantasy - monarchies, peasants in tunics etc. Much of the film takes place in castles and the sense of scale is conjured well - the film uses several "crane" shots to heighten the imprisonment and isolation of Arete in her various forms of captivity, and I've picked out two here in particular.

The animation is fluid and characterful, with character designs that look like an illustration. While the art and scale isn't as eye-popping as a Ghibli film it has a lovely storybook feel to it and there are some particularly impressive moments towards the end of the film in particular, I would also be remiss in leaving out the work on various items of "art" in the film - there are tapestries with each individual thread drawn in, and beautifully illuminated books that the characters read, for instance.

I liked the film when I first saw it but not as much as I did on revisiting it. I expected something different from it at the time - all I knew was it was a "feminist fairy tale" and having grown up on hand-me-down young adult fantasy novels by the likes of Tamora Pierce I expected some kind of ass kicking woman in a man's world type story, which is emphatically not the case here. I appreciate its quieter charms now, in particular how impressive the opening section of the film is - Arete barely speaks for the first 15 minutes and yet her character is established perfectly by her actions, only for it to be completely reinforced by the scene which follows in which she quietly deflates the braggadacio of a would-be suitor with earnestness and intelligence, rather than a quip or a kick.

I don't know if I'd agree with tamerlane that it's better than Spirited Away, which I have also not seen for many years. I'm not an enormous fan of Miyazaki's films but I did like that one, so I should probably revisit it.

Anyway, if you haven't seen it - you should! It's a good film!

I'm not going to bother watching the sequel now since I was spoiled on the fact that the sequel apparently
retcons the entire series

And yeah, what Jarmel said.

Setting aside Astral Ocean for a minute, we can all at least afford to write off the movie since it has absolutely nothing to do with Eureka Seven at all. It's a completely different story that's wearing Eureka Seven's skin for convenience. And while lifting unrelated casts and putting them into a retelling of a mecha show worked twice for Imagawa, Pocket Full of Rainbows really, really doesn't.

That said, my God the sequel was bad. Show was like a list of things Eureka Seven didn't need. Like, "Hey how about we put a white haired pretty boy!" "What if we gave Renton a gun?" "What if we did time travel!" Beyond that, though, it flagrantly ignored several important plot points of Eureka Seven to make its plot happen, and then half the plot threads in the show collapsed into nothing as the show went on.

I realize you're not really defending Astral Ocean and I don't want you to think I'm jumping on you but man, if I could name one anime I wish didn't exist, it'd really have to be that one, haha.

The amazing part is that BONES has been trying to ape E7 for a good chunk of the past decade and they've fucked up every single time.
