Resident Evil HD Remaster confirmed for PS3/PS4/360/XB1/PC

Lazy and cheap = shit for me. Upscaled backgrounds are bad, even if the sharpening makes it to hide it sometimes, and the lost of the depth of vision on most of them are shameful. Some improved main characters and lightning is still below the minimum we should ask in these cases.

REmake deserved way more.

It does, and I hope Capcom does something in response. I have the GC game and could easily run out and buy the Wii version for the cheap, so it doesn't affect me much. Despite that though, I would buy it again if it was decent so that my wife (who like puzzles and horror films) could have an easier time playing it both visually and through controller familiarity.

And Capcom should listen, since once again they are relying on a rather limited market in comparison to a full retail release, as well as having next to no marketing to rely on in comparison to what they generally output for the franchise. And who dominates this digital market? People like us here on NeoGAF, and those on Reddit, Kotaku, IGN...everywhere of which has some fairly disgruntled people.

There is nothing intrinsically wrong with it being a slightly improved version of the GC REmake, or at worse a straight port. What should affect perception is how Capcom chooses to price the title.

How about $20 sir? You know that's how much they're gunna charge for this. Also the fact that the PC version is bound to run at 60FPS. It will be glorious.

It can't, for reasons I've already explained in an earlier post. Every version will be hard-locked at 30 fps, just like the GCN and Wii versions.

OH MY GOD

ARE YOU SERIOUS

WAKING UP TO THIS

OH MY HEART

Woke up like that earlier too! :O

Man remember that the game is still in progress, let's wait until see some final product images! Don't let the dream die!

I played RE4 HD and it looked terrible, so I'm not getting my hopes up with Cacpcom.

I always thought the reason REmake and Zero didn't get HD versions were the pre rendered backgrounds and that they no longer have the assets. There's only so much you can do with 4:3 SD backgrounds but I wouldn't have imagined it to look this bad.

Do I win a prize for talking about my penis on the Internet???
Oh man I only played a few hours of REmake on GameCube, I'm all over this when it drops for Xbone. I'll probably own a PS4 by the time it comes out but I'm guessing the Bone/PS4 versions are going to look identical anyway.

So on the PS3, between this, the CV and RE4 HD remasters, and PS Classics, I'll be able to play all of the main Resident Evil games on one system. That's pretty cool.

This is great news. But the first image are a fucking mess. It looks like an upscaled version of thee GCN version with a sharpened filter over it. I mean, its still in development and it has mobths vefore being released. Hopefully that'll change by the time they release something new.

Well said.

How or why you'd defend the billion dollar corporation to not spend a little extra effort to maximizing the quality of their product, must have an associated mental disorder.

I get it. They don't owe us anything, but why support such poor output.

The Last of Us on PS4.. That's a great remaster.

The sales potential is probably very low for this port and if I would have to guess the amount of people involved is also as small as possible. It's basically just a very little side project with almost no attention from capcom whatsoever.

Not that it makes it ok, but this is too old from a gameplay perspective to sell millions in this day and age even they put more work into it and really remastered it.

Also to those trying to diminish and use the Wii port of RE4 as a reason why this port won't make it to the Wii U. It has sold more than any other iteration of the game (GCN/PS2/mobile/PC) to this day and was probably the most successful port from capcom right after bringing the Monster Hunter series to the PSP.

From reading the thread, my take is the image on the left is a down-sampled version of the HD remaster so you can't see the actual 2D pre-rendered backgrounds are not higher quality in this new version, and the image on the right is a degraded version of the GCN release, so it looks a lot worse there than it actually does when running off a GCN. A direct screenshot of that exact scene running on Dolphin was posted in the thread a few pages back, and it looks every bit as sharp and clear as the down-sampled version on the left.
Down-sampled from what? If they had higher resolution images wouldn't they just use them?

This is an old game and it would actually be bizarre if they went back and re-did it all again. It would be great, but that's not really in the realm of reality.

If it wasn't feasible then Capcom shouldn't have called it "HD Remaster," a term which implies that very sort of effort.

It's definitely within the realm of reality - Final Fantasy X's remaster went back and re-rendered all of the prerendered backgrounds, Ocarina of Time 3D did as well. Capcom will probably charge us more for their lack of effort.

I don't know about you guys, but I enjoyed recently playing through Final Fantasy VIII via Steam; got no qualms picking this up too.

I know :/

Seriously what did the people expect? They redo all the backgrounds of the game from the scratch to 1080p ?!

Stop complaining and let's wait for more footage specially for PS4 / XBOX1.

never left the stone age
welp. there's the official name for this game
re remake on gamecube: REmake
this new REmake port on ps3: REpackaged
On that note, I have a suggestion for the name of the eventual OT

Resident Evil HD Remaster |OT| REcycled and REpackaged

I did play the remake on GCN, but I will still likely purchase this. I really wish they would do a RE2 remake though.

Exactly, people should stop whinig!
Ohhh...look, we get to play one of the greatest games ever made without having do emulate it or buying a 15 year old console from ebay that barely works. BUT the graphics is not as good as todays games

First of all...screenshots says nothing.

Second of all WHO CARES

And you get to pay 40 euro's to play a worse upressed version for a 10 year old game! Whats not to like?

You're in for a treat. Game is incredible.

The game is incredible. First timers will/should love it. I 100% recommend trying it out (on any hardware) if they have never played it.

For those of us that love this game and already have a 1080p+ version running on Dolphin, lets hope the X1/PS4/PC version gets more love than the PS360 version.

There's a reason many aren't happy, they already have access (some multiple ways) to the game...and it looks better than those screens.

While having a remastered REmake is making me salivate, I just don't like that they seem to have just upscaled the backgrounds from the obvious uncompressed source. I think if they were going this route, they should have just included Resident Evil's Zero, 2, 3, and Code Veronica X. They could have put them all in a Remastered Collection.

I will wait and see on price, I would guess they do a RE4 HD and price it at $20.

because that's literally what it is lol
and that's all its ever going to be. don't listen to anyone saying to wait for the final product
either they remake all the backgrounds or not. there's no in between.

Did they?

I don't know, what I'm seeing seems right in line with what I would have expected from a 'remaster'.

I was tempted so many times this year to grab the Gamecube version. I'm glad I waited! Hopefully that MGS remake is coming too, because that's tempting me.

I can't get upset at this being called a "remaster" because that word has been pretty silly ever since forumites started associating it with video games.

It's always meant "port" or "slightly enhanced port". Which is exactly what this is.

Woah, came out of nowhere? I've heard so many good things about the GC remake. PS4 day 1.

So there could be a PS4 retail release in the west (EU)?

There is nothing intrinsically wrong with it being a slightly improved version of the GC REmake, or at worse a straight port. What should affect perception is how Capcom chooses to price the title.

A straight port would have likely gone over a bit better. Sure, some people would throw a fit, but that's GAF. Then again, I wanted a straight port in hopes for cross-buy on Vita.

With everything slightly improved here, there's something going wrong.

Why no Resident Evil 2 Remake? Still, day one for sure

REmake and Zero sold terribly in comparison to RE4, 5, and 6. Until the market is given the opportunity to and chooses classic survival horror experiences over globe-trotting, ninja-bioterrorism agents, things aren't going to change.

Capcom is now, somewhat, giving the consumers a chance to speak on how successful a game like REmake can be. But its basically rigged to disappoint because the company is pinching pennies and doesn't want to take the risk of retail.

Well, the HD version shown in that screenshot is down-sampled from how it actually looks in HD... that was my point, you can't see the image there in HD where you'd be able to realize the pre-rendered backgrounds are not HD quality since it has been reduced down to SD quality in that screenshot.

No, sir. Why would you insist that it would be bizarre?

Why isn't it realistic to go back to a master file (hah.. master.. as in, re-master) and save a higher res shot?

OMFG YESSSS. Of course this happens after I finally cave and play it on dolphin on my crummy laptop though. Oh well, definitely 100% will buy again to support good RE. I only wish it were coming to vita, too.

Couldn't the PC version get modified to reach 60?

It's probably the same situation as many other Japanese games where the game's logic is dependent on screen refresh timing rather than real-world timing. Same reason you won't see a 60fps Jet Set Radio, Metal Slug, etc.

Not to mention the 30fps background videos.

At first I got hyped that it was all the RE games in one collection..

Then I saw it was just REmake and I was like "eh".

The sad thing is that this is probably Capcom's biggest announcement of the year thus far. A remaster of a remake...
