Resident Evil HD Remaster confirmed for PS3/PS4/360/XB1/PC

That's the least of the issues. True fans wouldn't be playing widescreen anyways because it was never built with that in mind. The pan and scan method they're implementing is actually a pretty good idea for fixed camera angle scenes that were set up for 4:3. The isometric view lends itself more to movies than 3d camera games and you get similar issues that can't be fixed when trying to make it widescreen. Not only due to the need to rerender, but due to the composition of the maps, scenes, and item placements.

Not rerendering the backgrounds in HD is a much bigger issue and a no sale IMO.

Agreed. It wouldn't be an insane amount of work to even redo the art. There are so many fans of this game, that redoing the art / rerendering etc would absolutely be worth the effort. And if it is upscaled and they are calling it 'HD', then that is false advertisement.

I alway thought the deal with this not already happening was that Nintendo had some rights on the remake version of the game.

It looks like Nintendo doesn't have any partial legal authority of RE Remake or RE Zero for that matter. Capcom entered an exclusivity partnership with Nintendo to release RE Remake and RE Zero on GameCube. RE 4 was also initially part of that exclusivity agreement as well, but Shinji Mikami and Capcom tried to make a deal with Microsoft first to put it on Xbox, but it never worked out because Capcom and Microsoft both knew Japanese gamers wouldn't be very supportive of the American Xbox console, so Capcom took the offer from Nintendo after. Shinji Mikami was upset when he found out Capcom had reconsidered its options to port RE4 to PS2 9 months after the game came out on GameCube. The actual announcement was made just two months before RE 4 came out on GameCube.

Joke post?

No. Think about it. In movies when shit gets real intense, they use slow motion to amplify that intensity. Now, what if you were to apply that slow motion effect over an entire movie? It'd be almost too intense to handle! Same principle here, only in reverse. You double the speed, it's just going to be less intense, clearly.

After reading the last few pages, it's disappointing to find out they are going the cheap route with this re-release. I'll just play it on pc at 4:3 res instead of the shitty widescreen.

Yes it would.

Would be quite the undertaking to rework the modeling and textures for native 16:9.

Only PS3 will get disc version in Japan (both standalone and LE).

Quoted from Siliconera:
The PlayStation 3 version will be sold as both a downloadable game and retail title. A boxed copy goes for 3,990 yen plus tax. Fans can also pick up a version with an 48 page art guide book and G. Trevor floor map for 4,990 yen plus tax.

I'm doing the Alan Grant sunglasses gif right now. This makes me beyond happy. I can't even put it into words. Does anyone know if the Japanese version comes with English voices and/or subtitles? I want a physical copy but I'm not nearly far enough along in my Japanese studies for any sort of modern game, much less Resident Evil. Like does the series do it traditionally, I'm not expecting anyone to know for certain about this specific HD remaster.

Never mind, this was answered. Thanks.

If Japan is getting the only retail version, looks like I'm importing again.

Can you read Japanese? Cause it'll be that language, not English. I really wanted a physical release. Its Okami HD/RE 4 HD all over again.

I wonder if I'll be able to get through the whole game this time...haha.

Seriously, guys, REMake is the scariest game I've ever played. Bar none. I couldn't finish it.

Yeah I just thought Nintendo co-funded development of the remake, and or published it, like W101 for example. Suppose either I heard wrong, or things changed.

It's even better with an unstable framerate.

Imagine avoiding an enemy at 5-10fps, I'd be stressed as shit not to mess up.

Holy crap yes!

I never played Resident Evil 1 or REmake. Will I love it if I loved RE4?

REmake is very different than RE4, but Mikami did direct both of them and I can say I played REmake after I had played RE4, and I still loved it. The thing both have in common outside of mythos and similar controls (different angles and aiming though) is the fact both continually introduce ridiculous but fun and well-designed obstacles for the player, but while RE4 is more focused on how this attributes to its gunplay, REmake is more focused on how this might be challenging survival-wise for the player, or to try and scare/unnerve them.

You will love it even if you hate games in general :p

I like the sound of it. Just waiting for a pre-order page to appear.

Good. I'm open for a survival horror RE (which is what RE originally was lol)

You know guys, 60FPS would honestly do next to nothing to improve the game. All of the backgrounds are pre-rendered with fixed cameras, and it's a classic survival horror game which means the combat isn't exactly something you need a higher fluidity of control for.

Even tough we already know the fate of Wii U in terms of 3rd Party games, news like this and the lack of a Wii U version still makes me depressed, literally. Even more because Wii U is the only game console I have and my PC is outdated as hell. It's like Nintendo is not even trying anymore and they believe everything will be fine if customers wait 4 to 5 months between each 1st party game and zero retail 3rd party stuff in between. Last year we had RE: Revelations why not this one!? My goddd! I need a cup of tea.

So, it is disappointing that Capcom doesn't seem to have the files in the vault (or interest, or maybe even talent) to try to remaster this to present the same overwhelming quality that we got when it was first released on Gamecube...

But honestly, having the game at all on other platforms is just good news. (Although, poor Vita/3DS/Wii U...) It's a great version of a classic game, and going by Dolphin emulation experiences it should come off well on HD systems even with the simple effort. I don't have the faith in Capcom as it is today to do this remake with the same craftsmanship and effort that they put into REmake on Gamecube and have RE1 come off a miracle for a third time, I'd rather they put this out and honor Mikami's team's masterpiece without trying to mess with it. And even though it is an upscale instead of a remake/remaster, they seem to be doing it without overly ambitious tinkering, with unforced 16:9 (and scrolling instead of some janky crop/stretch process) and non-tank control that both can be switched off at any time and character models that are improved but don't stand out from the old backgrounds. The screenshots don't show a stunning HD remastering, but the info doesn't indicate a screwjob either.

If remaking it all over with a new engine and new assets was part of a path to REmake all three PS1 Resident Evil games, then that'd be a different story. (Oh, how I wish that was the case.) But as it is, it is at least good to see they haven't forgotten that this exists.

Okay, hold your horses. The thing was literally just announced a couple hours ago, there's no need to go jumping guns off pre-release announcement screenshots and acting like we know the port in and out.

This.

It's dated for 2015, so surely they have some work and tweaks to do. Printers can't be that slow.

So then Capcom should have:

1) Made a straight-up port of REmake (minus any filters) and priced/marketed it as such

or

2) Made an actual remaster like Square did with Final Fantasy X HD - which was also filled with pre-rendered assets.

A straight port would look terrible on an HD screen and Square loves throwing money out the window on risky ventures. Not saying the FFX collection was one, but I'm not sure what the numbers are on it, if they made any money off of it versus the cost.

At least it's something.

Holy shit, I just realized this by writing this post.

They fucking lost the original background data, that's why they cap at 30FPS and upscale the JPEGS.

Nah. Even if they have it, do you think they'd spend the extra effort to fix it, when there are fans (some in this thread, clearly) who are defending tooth and nail for NOT remastering using the original assets, and are perfectly happy with port material?

It's a damn shame.

Its no true full hd. It doesnt have much better character models. It doesnt have 60fps. It doesnt even have true widescreen lol.

Man JP devs still release crappy images even now /sigh

Think I will skip it though considering its not a remake.

Wait so its just Remake with HD character models basically? Eh, I was hoping for an actual re-remake. As odd as it seems I don't really like playing pre-last gen games in HD. They end up looking kind of awkward to me.

The screenshots clearly show that they're taking the old pre-rendered backgrounds, upscaling them, and applying garish filters over the top.

Unless they change their minds entirely, the evidence is solid.

The least we can ask for is a straight port. Would that look terrible in HD? Guess how bad this "HD Remaster" they're pimping will look! Even worse!
