Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

Whoa, so Microsoft is NOT publishing?

The plot thickens! Timed exclusivity?! Don't be so coy, Crystal Dynamics!

EDIT: Someone pointed out that they don't make $60 for each sale, which is obvious (and something I overlooked). So it makes it more realistic that MS could possibly pay for the missing sales. =/

Im really not a fanboy type. Bt this is bullshit. I dont play a lot Of games. Ill not buy Diablo ps4 even though i want cause i wont have Time to play it as destiny come soon after. I loved tomb raider DE ps4. Tomb raider have always been a playstation + else plateform. Its really a dick move. I love exclusivity is like to play some halo or Quantum break but i can deal If i wont. But tomb raider not on ps4 is totally insane. Ând i cant stand sub 1080p game

Sad :(

It's turning into a farce now. So SE publishing and Xbox* exclusive for "holiday 2015".

Surely that means a "complete" version will hit PS4/PC in 2016.

With MS publishing that wouldn't make sense but with SE publishing and that very specific wording it seems likely.

NeoGAF would be fun to watch if a complete/director's cut version comes out.

Why are you people so upset? PC I can understand but you mean to tell me Sony fans actually enjoyed that shoddy pseudo-pornographic Uncharted clone? It was a dirt simple corridor shooter with "LOL! 100 XP!!" type notifications. Are you serious? This isn't some awesome Platinum Games produced "spectacle fighter" (term coined by Zero Punctuation) like Bayonetta 2.

Play Uncharted 4 and pretend Nathan has boobs.

While the torture porn aspects that CD pushed in order to get across that this is Lara's origin grew tiresome really quickly, without those bits the game was actually quite enjoyable. The island was beautiful and a joy to explore, and the shooty bits were quite fun. Uncharted and this new Tomb Raider aren't really that much alike.

Couldn't they just say already instead of having this kind of confusion? Not that this isn't assumed at the very least, as a timed exclusive. I don't know why these publishers ignore the millions of fans on the more popular platforms like PC and PS4. Boggles the mind to see these deals.

I really like Keighley. He acts like a tool sometimes but he really does seem to care about gamers' best interests. What other video game journalist would actually try to get a full picture on stuff like this instead of just publishing a story and calling it a day.

What?? this seems so weird to do now reboot the series have it a multiplatform game and then with the sequel make it an exclusive?

The fact that MS can't actually seem to come out and state clearly - without doubt - that it is a permanent exclusive should tell us something...

Big exclusive. And while I think we can all agree that this is likely a timed exclusive, what we don't know is what that means. When Dead Rising 3 was announced as an exclusive, I was sure it was just timed. And it was. But it was only timed for the PC (at least so far) and still has never come to the PS4. And of course there's Titanfall. We were all sure it was only timed exclusive and then Microsoft apparently reworked the deal to keep it from PS4.

It's SquareEnix, so I'm sure it will make it's way to PS4 eventually, but will probably hit PC first. Doesn't matter to me, because I own both consoles. I'll be playing it next year no matter what.

Microsoft's track record is the spottiest of the three in this regard, though. You're right, it's not guaranteed to come to other platforms -- but Microsoft announcing an exclusivity deal is treated differently than if, say, Nintendo announces it.

It was actually a really awesome game.

Fine but it has that generic COD style cinematic awesome. There was nothing particularly TOMB RAIDER about it besides Lara and the title.
Come to me crying when Last Guardian or FF XV jumps ship. Those games look and feel unique.

That shanty-town level was such bull. I played the Uncharted soundtrack over it and suddenly it made sense.

Listen to your post for a second. That's exactly why they did, to get more people to buy their systems, but the problem isn't MS. MS is just doing their job, Square doesn't know how to do theirs.

I think MS shares some of the blame here as well. I get that it's their job to get people to want to buy their consoles. But paying money to keep a game from an already established fan base...I think that's shitty. That said, I'm thinking this is timed exclusive. Which I still think makes MS shitty. And I would say the same thing for Sony for this (and I have said this).

How can people be mad at MS? They're incredibly behind on the console war and they needed to do something to help them to catch up.

XB1 owners will probably be thrilled.

It does suck for PC/PS4/PS3 owners, but you can't blame MS for this move. It's a good move, at least on paper.

except they've done this before when 360 was dominating. it's just a part of their game plan, always has been.

This is the worst messaging, or maybe it's intentional to have the most amount of people assume it is only on Xbox for the life of the title.

okay this has to be timed , looks SE wants to avoid UC4 so they bring it out on XB1 only and then months later port it .
This most likely see this as a win\win for them .

I honestly would have to see Square Enix's financials, and by that I mean working in SE's accounting department. There are very few cases where this makes any sense unless SE sold this for a low number. If Microsoft is publishing then SE has to be in some sort of trouble financially.
That would have to be such a peculiar situation and one that doesn't logically follow from what I know about the respective parties. My guess is timed-exclusive 6 months to a year then release on PS4 and PC. It's the only scenario that makes sense.

Fucksake. I hadn't played a Tomb Raider game since Tomb Raider II, but I really enjoyed playing the TR2013: Definitive Edition on my PS4 earlier this year. One of the few games I was looking forward to and it's Xbone exclusive ;_;

I'm thinking it has to be. After embarrassing myself with my shit math....the cost it would need to make up for cutting out 50% of their user base, just isn't adding up here. Would make more sense if they are just pocketing the extra cash from MS to keep it timed exclusive for the holidays (they want their console units sold)..and then the title release in 2015 for PS4 and other platforms.

50% of their user base? I bet ps4/ps3/pc is closer to 75%

They really ought to be explicit about it being exclusive "for the lifespan of the title" (a la Titanfall) if that's the case, though I'm still inclined to think it'll come to PC eventually.

Also, they're not specifying Xbox One - is it cross-gen?

February 2016 for all other platforms! :D

That is my guess anyways :p

I don't think Microsoft would of paid enough money to make this an actual full Xbox exclusive.

They must have known there would be questions about the exclusivity. The PR department must plan for this stuff, right?

You mean to tell me you are going to sit there and pretend that you don't know some people like a game that you don't? People are upset because they won't be able to play the sequel and some people are upset because it seems that MS is doing something "underhanded." People are upset for different reasons.

Let the tears flow....this thing is full on exclusive

Edit- This is business. Square/Crystal is hemorrhaging money. They need the cash infusion. Its as simple as that. Just look at how Crytek is doing. You don't want the game don't buy it.

There is no one else to blame for that than MS themselves because they pressed into the market with money only.... Rare... :(

I'm deadly serious. People always complain about COD/Gears style gameplay and here they are bemoaning the loss of another generic cover/corridor shooter as if it's some avant garde indie game darling

It's the level of outrage that get's me. Though I understand that most of it is for Microsoft's underhanded tactics as you said.
Today's its Tomb Raider, tomorrow it could be something I give a damn about so that's scary and this should be discouraged

That's the greatest non-answer I've ever heard.

It would be nice if they just told the truth: "Microsoft gave us a ton of money to do this"

This seems relevant again somehow:

I don't know how much the rest of you know about gaming culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in Hollywood where you can become successful by being an ***hole. If you screw someone over in gaming, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the PlayStation public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Rise of the Tomb Raider for Xbox One, nor will they purchase any of Square's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Square has alienated an entire market with this move.

Square, publicly apologize and announce Rise of the Tomb Raider for PS4 or you can kiss your business goodbye.

Ahaha this is totally timed. Flubbing all around.

It's such a mess of a reveal.

Instead of becoming the megaton drop, it became a poison that pretty much made Crystal Dynamics and SE shoot up 50 ranks in 'hated devs,'

And now 5 kinds of mixed messaging on its exclusivity status.
