so, this is timed or full exclusive?

this sure sounds like a full exclusive to me...

I am not seeing anything that disprove Keighley wrong, unless they come out and say, "Rise of the Tomb Raider is exclusive for the Xbone." otherwise it's safe to assume that it's a time exclusive.

It has always seemed to me that with these announcements, they don't use words like that because they want you to think of it as exclusive and not timed exclusive. This is business as usual.

yeah, there's yer everyday salt, & then there's this. had this exclusivity, whether timed or not, been mentioned in the original announcement, there definitely would've been some salt. but this sorta 'bait'n'switch' bullshit (get everyone excited, then pull the rug out) just ends up making se/cd look pretty sleazy...

i think if this's indeed a timed exclusive, they should probably just spit it out now. because the whole thing's accomplished nothing but making them look bad...

Why SHOULD MS announce this a "timed" exclusive?

MS doesn't not owe PS4 gamers anything and they are being smart by making people think it is 100% exclusive. That's how business works.

I am no fan of this form of moneyhatting, but expecting them to come clean on it being a timed exclusive is very naive.

So was Splinter Cell... and I didn't see the outrage when Conviction was announced to be exclusive to the 360.

Seriously, what is the big deal. If you want to play it so badly, then just get an Xbox One. Exactly what Microsoft wished for when it entered into this agreement with Square Enix.

The outrage isn't just on gaf. Check out their official tumblr or look at their forums.

And I'm not dropping over $500 (which is what the console would cost here in my country) to play one game sorry.

Maybe things aren't as cut and dry as we here all want them to be. Maybe negotiations for "just how exclusive " this game will be are still ongoing? Maybe MS had some sort of option clause that allows them to buy out full exclusivity in 6-12 months if the game is getting good buzz as it gets closer to release. I mean, it took an awful long time for EA and MS to finally and unequivocally declare Titanfall as 100% exclusive so who knows. These situations are probably a lot more complex, and fluid, than we like to make them out to be.

The whole " they didn't want to compete with uncharted" thing is laughable. People buy more than one game during the holidays. People will buy both games not choose between them.

It's a xbone exclusive just like blood born is a ps4 exclusive.

Splinter cell started on xbox

And paying $460 for a game is totally the same as paying $60
everyone will clearly be happy to pay $460 for the new tomb raider and this will work out wonderfully for everyone involved

I really wonder how much money it takes to make this sort of deal happen. I mean, you have to look at how much they lost in potential sales on PS4/PC. Maybe they get just a percent of that since SE gets the cash up front, no matter how well the game does, but that is still going to be a huge chunk of cash.

I can see why SE would want this, but I don't really see the investment being worth it for MS. I doubt this game is going to push enough hardware to justify whatever they paid to make it exclusive.

Looks like AAA third party exclusives aren't dead at all. Nice.

Looks like I have even more of a reason to pick up an Xbox One now. Videogames, man.

Edit: Ah, never mind.

I have no interest in Tomb Raider, but this sure was unexpected. MS definitely wants their own uncharted, but this is no doubt timed. I can't imagine this will help boost sales for X1, though nor do I think it will be good for Tomb Raider's sales..

The internet is full of hates. I am pretty sure if Rise of Tomb Raider is exclusive to PS4, the internet will be full of joys, happiness and trolls to Microsoft.

Bullshit. if Sony pulled that stunt I would be the first one to send a tweet back to Shu asking him not to waste money on timed third party games.

SE: 'The money was good y'all.'

Sad practices, but then again, this is undoubtedly a timed exclusive and frankly, not one I was really excited for.

As far as Microsoft buying up exclusives, it could have been far, far worse.

How do you know? I thought most sources had the game as full-exclusive to XONE.

As far as Microsoft "moneyhatting" games, Sony used to do the same during the PS2 era and nobody complained. The sodium content is high in this thread.

System seller right there. With Halo, and TR exclusively coming to Xbox One, I think it's time to buy the system. Fucking genius move, MS.

The amount of backlash this is getting I don't see it selling systems. MS is gambling because if this is a true exclusive they put out a lot of money for this. It's not going to move the sales needle. This isn't a hyped game like Titanfall which moved the needle albeit only a small margin.

If MS put out more money then they will see in return(console sales) it's another negative for the division. At what point do investors say this is enough?

Sounds to me that Crystal Dynamics has the option to release on other platforms later but MS doesn't want people to know about that. They want people to believe it will never come out on another platform and the contract they struck with CD forbides them to say it is a timed exclusive.

However, I could be utterly, utterly wrong.

The development team may not have known about this until yesterday:

Oh man, that is so hilarious if true.

*SCENE*
CD: Let's make this game awesome!
S-E: Team meeting.
CD: Ok.
S-E: We sold exclusivity rights to Microsoft, but we are still publishing it.
CD: But didn't most of our sales come from other platforms?
*S-E shows the check*
CD: Ok, we will get back to work.
S-E: We have to hide the PS4 version is coming out a year later.
CD: Sure.

Because most of the people that bought TR, bought it on either PS3, PS4 or PC. Yet that majority of people are unable to buy the sequel unless they happen to also have an xbox in their house.

I'd say being pissed off is an acceptable response to this announcement.

Honestly, "pissed off" strikes me as a bit excessive. I'd stop at "being bummed" as being a response I can empathize with. Honestly, if it were up to me, every game could come out on every platform possible and I'd be happy. But when large corporations are competing directly against each other for a share of the same pie, I've been in this hobby long enough to understand that investments for exclusivity come with the territory. And I'm not saying that everyone else can't draw their own lines on what is and isn't acceptable, but I personally don't see it as a very fruitful exercise to try and delineate between which partnerships were on the up-and-up and which are sleazeball moves made by greedy executives in smoke-filled board rooms wherein I clearly am referring to the kind of smoke that can only come from expensive cigars lit with one hundred dollar bills.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Since Rise of the Tomb Raider is releasing in 2015 exclusively for Xbox One, it's obvious that FFXV will be released in 2015 exclusively for PS4.

Everything makes sense.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
Truth. Though it did find its way back on a Sega platform again with the Dreamcast.

The more I remember the franchise, the more I realize it's been a culprit of these console exclusivity contracts for most of its life. Tomb Raider 2 and 3 exclusive to Sony, Tomb Raider: Anniversary 6-month exclusive to Sony, and Tomb Raider: Legend wouldn't see its life on a then current-generation Playstation console until nearly 5 years later. Seems like this Microsoft venture is just another feather in its hat.

Except for one console that wasn't mired by this exclusivity until now... Personal Computer. It's really a "LaimNeesonWhyWhyWhy.gif" situation in regards to cutting PC out to spite other consoles faces for Square and Microsoft.
