Media Create Sales: Week 34, 2014 (Aug 18 - Aug 24)

Eh... 8-9M seems pretty optimistic, consider the current climate for home consoles in Japan and that it took an extended cycle to get the PS3 to 10M.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
I still have doubt PS4 is going to sell even slightly lower than PS3, due to the overall environment but also due to the fact it won't probably last as much as PS3 on the market (PS4 being released at the start of PS3's 8th year on the market is not something I think will happen again).

All you have to do is look at it. Plus, the game is a FFXII clone, not a proper action hunting game.

I'm just saying it won't live up to its potential.

I totally agree with you on budget, it clearly looks cheap and ugly, but I really dont see FFXII in it at all, it's just FFCC but uglier.

Good stuff for ps4. Though cross Gen might hamper performance.

Sigh, Gundam Spirits looks like a cool game I'll never get to play...

With fine I mean 8-9M and PS3-level of third party support.

That seems somewhat optimistic given how long it took the PS3 to get there and that the PS4 is currently doing worse.

Next year is going to be much better.

Yeah, PS4 is going to have a worse holiday season than Vita 2012. I didn't think it was possible. Was it spoken during the conference God Eater Rage Burst is coming out this year? I don't see any mentio about that in the written reports.

And the PS4 situation is gonna continue worse than Vita, because it is not getting a price cut or an new model next year, just the multi-platform games. It's gonna be well behind it until FFXV has a release date.

Also, it doesn't help Sony currently has an obsession with their useless online store, making limited models exclusive to it. It must be their great strategy for "One Sony"...

Anyway, Dragon Quest Not Musou RPG was really a surprise, equally for the collaboration and for it being a PlayStation exclusive (no reason not to be on Wii U as well other than money hats). All the drama during the announcement was laughable, though -- "Hey guyze, we got Dragon Quest too". Horii couldn't look more confused (or maybe he's just getting old).

Eh. Vita had absolutely nothing for 2012 holiday season. PS4 at least has some games. Yes they are western and most sell like shit but it's still something. COD alone is way bigger than anything Vita had 2012 holiday season (probably going to sell most on PS3 though). Doesn't change the fact that it's still anemic lineup but I still think Vita had even worse lineup.

I'm working with the assumption of PS4 having timely pricedrops, unlike the PS3, made alongside key releases.
And totally expecting PS4 to cost 25000Y by 2016 and getting KH3, FFXV and DQXI that year.

Believe.

Yeah I'm certainly not expecting the PS4 to buck the trend of steady gen over gen decline every other platform faced.

Even with all that, it's hard to see that happening. The market is also not going to remain stagnant until 2016. The mobile market will probably get even bigger, and console interest will wane even further. Nintendo will probably announce a 3DS successor which will probably outsell the PS4 in a matter of a 1.5-2 years at that point.
The only thing in favor of PS4 will probably be the death of the PS3 and Vita will probably be around 5k a week at that point.

I really don't know why people keep mentioning "it's also coming to PS3(PSV)".

PSV cross-gen titles already tell us cross-gen titles help new platform a lot, even in Japan.

The remaining console gamers are mostly hardcore player, who always choose the better version.

Also, unlike PSV, PS4 already guaranteed the big titles coming from every third parties except for some money-hatters. Now PS4 is getting almost every mid-tier franchise like Persona, the release schedule will looks good.

So, what are the expectations here for X1 launch?

Just my wild guess but 35K - 60K for the first week. After a few weeks then, eh, demand may taper off a bit.

P5 changing from PS3 exclusive to cross-gen must be due to PS4's performance in Western market, that's for sure.

Reasons are not important here, the facts that PS4 is getting it are. PS4 version will sell more and sell hardware.

Thoughts re: Sony's conference

This seals the fate of the Vita as the new saturn. It will top at 5-6M at best.
At this point, if Sony were investing on Vita in Japan, this would be the conference were bigger games would be announced and other games like DQ:W would be coming to the system (it's a musou game with a PS3 version, it can't get easier than that).

Also I think PS4 will be fine. It's getting all the big franchises, even if not exclusively and, in the end, the userbase will move there.

I much more confident in the notion that PS4 will pretty much get eveyr PS3 franchise. Its even getting Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts.

Whether it can do 10 million........I want to see how it performs in 2015 and FFXV comes out. Right now its not looking like it will but the future always has surprises.

At least there's a date/year now.

I liked how mostly everything announced at today's show has a targeted period that clearly states 2015, as opposed to announcements with no dates, which are the goddamn worst. (MinnaGolf has no date, Sony pls)

Still waiting for Deep Down release date.

which data suggest this?

PS4 will probably sell more software than Vita did in 2012 (it's almost impossible not to), but I don't even know if it will manage to hit Vita's actual sales.

Actually forgot how shit Vita 2012 HW was: 10k, 14k, 21k, 20k, 33k

Still PS4's holiday lineup is not good.

In Japan? That's pretty presumptuous.

And yeah, I'm pretty sure the reason P5 is coming to PS4 is more due to the fact that the PS4 is doing so well overseas. It's a good decision by Atlus.

About Vita software sales for the first year...do we have any concrete data on the matter? In order to have a reference point for PS4.

P.S. During the latest Nintendo Direct, did Iwata actually state that developers are working on titles using the New 3DS' brand new features? What was the actual statement?

I'd like to note that the first Trauma Center game on Wii was one of their best performers ever (by a large margin over the average) in NPD, so they've certainly benefitted from getting in early before in the West.

It sold well over 200,000 copies in US. Which was amazing, given the kind of game it was.

Which is the best selling game on PS4 right now?
I think that if Ground Zero was able to sell 140k and Yakuza Ishin was able to sell aroudn the same (right?), it's not so crazy to think that MGSV could do better: because the total sales will be higher, and because the transition from PS3 will be at a slighlty advanced status.
How much better? I think that your 200k mark is the "starting point", while 300K could be the higher mark

Many consider Groud Zero like a 40$ demo so MGS5 will do a lot better then that

Persona is a SEGA IP now and this cross gen stuff is in line with other SEGA IPs on Sony systems, be it Hatsune Miku or Yakuza.

I'm not. Situation is pretty different for the PS3, compared to the PS2 before Persona 4 was released. PS2 was a really successful console, which sold really well, and with an extremely diverse line-up for pretty much all publishers.

As it stands, PS3 is pretty much done in Japan. Releasing P5 as PS3 exclusive in 2015 would be quite the risky move, and certainly wouldn't increase the fanbase.

No, I believe the reason P5 is also on PS4 is because of PS3 being not nearly as successful as the PS2, but also because this time around, SEGA is there to give the Atlus devs a hand. I actually remember an interview where the Atlus CEO was talking about that very topic. I'm pretty sure Atlus wouldn't have the game release on both platforms if not for Sega's help (not sure they'd be able to do that to begin with).

Oh, no doubt good PS4 sales helped, but they probably were more a "happy coincidence" than anything.

Don't know the rest, though.

Maybe you need some translation.

It says more details in Tokyo Game Show 2014. That's not the release date.

Anyway, I saw Minecraft is coming for PS4 and PSV this year 2014. Not details if it will be just digital like the PS3 version or they're going to release a package version.

If they do, PS4 2014 is not lost yet.

Still, it'd be strange if it weren't for this Fall, one year right after the vanilla release.

Yup and like so many people have said they are clever to do such a thing. To have a high quality, decently budgeted jrpg on PS4 will work very well in Atlus' favour.

Wonder if Nintendo is going to have a dedicated Wii U Nintendo Direct soonl? I mean, we have Fatal Frame V and Bayonetta 2 coming up in September, would be crazy not to promote it in the slightest and maybe some new announcements too in the wake of TGS :)

Trauma Center in general was a pretty strong series for them in the West (until it imploded). This data is a bit old (circa late 2012) but:

Trauma Center: Second Opinion - 250K
Trauma Center: Under the Knife - 240K
Trauma Center: New Blood - 170K
Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2 - 90K
Trauma Team - 50K

Persona by comparison:

Persona 3 FES: 205K
Persona 4: 200K
Persona 3: 80K
Persona PSP: 60K
Persona 3 PSP: 55K

I'd suspect that Persona 4 is the one to have primarily changed since then, especially due to P4G.

I suppose we're going to see a Bayonetta 2 Direct and a Fatal Frame V Direct, since this has been the most recent modus operandi this FY. Then, another general Direct in...October, maybe?

Again: what did Iwata actually state about software for New 3DS, during the Direct? Did he say that developers are making games with New 3DS (i.e. better graphics too, not just new control imputs) in mind or what else?

EDIT: Welp, it seems I already forgot this :lol

There will be exclusive software and non-exclusive software that will take advantage of the new CPU and have improved graphics and controls for the New 3DS system.

Exclusive titles are being planned to be announced. Old games will not be getting a graphical boost.

...Eh, wondering when and what are going to be these titles. I mean, so far we have

Monter Hunter 4G: camera control
Final Fantasy Explorers: the same...I think
SSB for Nintendo 3DS: C-stick Smash
Xenoblade: only for New 3DS

Right now, it doesn't seem there are titles with improved graphics on New 3DS, except for Xenoblade, obviously. And maybe MH4G, but it's unconfirmed.

I'm quite curious to see what titles third parties are bringing (at least) to the "enhanced" table, not expecting that much on the "New 3DS only" table.

The PS4 will be lucky to hit 60% of that even with the support it's getting. I think the PS4 will end up selling anywere from 4-6 million(and possibly less than that).

I still do not understand completely what the figures really do. Like much of what Nintendo is doing these days, their NFC solution seems confusing and convoluted.
What makes them confusing and convoluted?
It was a Toys-R-Us exclusive so always was going to 'bomb'.
Who thought that was a good idea?
With fine I mean 8-9M and PS3-level of third party support.

Sounds about right, though along with the userbase I think the overall software ecosystem will shrink as well.

Are you guys serious? There is no reason to believe that the PS4 will hit those kind of numbers right now.

COD is November.

He's referring to you implying that Destiny a holiday title when it comes out in September.
