THE EVIL WITHIN is the real deal! (UK Demo impressions)

this fucking game

if OP, Dusk Golem, and Game Informer aren't bullshitting and the game maintains this level of quality for a reasonable number of hours, it's a fucking GotY contender. Full stop.

That video itself expresses why playing a horror game at a con is very, very much a bad idea so to speak. Bright lights, horrible loud sounds coming from elsewhere, etc. But yes... I think I can tell the framerate looks better.

Also you are rushing. You never know when someone is gonna ask you to leave. I was lucky though I got to play it twice in long sessions.

Regarding framerate - I think the game is fine at it's current framerate, but I can see that 60fps will really benefit it also. The weighty aiming will feel better at 60.

I think the description for Akumu stated that "one hit and it's all over". Could mean that you die in one hit - you'd have to play really carefully.

From what I've seen of the game, one hit to die seems a little awkward. I'd imagine one death and you start from the beginning working better in this environment.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
Everything I hear about this game makes me think enthusiasts will absolutely love it, but the general public will hate/ignore it.

At the very least, I hope it finds the same word of mouth success and cult following that Wolfenstein did.

They even share some similarities in terms of being developed by new studios comprised of industry veterans and Bethesda publishing.

I'm not allowing myself to get excited by this game, the crushing disappointment will be too much for me if it turns out badly.

The last time I seen it was that hour long YouTube demo after E3 and graphically it looked really bad. Hopefully that was the last gen version.

Take it that was Casual? Those Haunted were far less aggressive than what I've seen in Survival footage. Not about when they are sort of lounging in that room when the player came in, but in the middle of combat.

The player's bopping jog is always going to make me giggle like an idiot.

I believe that video was from the PS4 version and honestly I didn't see anything really bad about it. I think that is just a personal preference obviously with most people. I've loved the art and style of everything I've seen so far.

I'd take the one hit and back to checkpoint system over starting from the beginning of the game. If you get hit, you are doing something wrong. Enemies should never be closer than 5 feet to you.

Do me a favor people that are playing, if you shot a leg, arm, head, what happens?

The leg gets cut off? so is the arms? I know heads explode but I want to know with how many bullets.

How many bullets to kill an enemy randomly?

Is there tearing?, slowdowns? Being this IdTech5 is there any aggresive pop in?

Is the ammo as scarce as in TLOU?

Thanks

I know there have been a fair few extended gameplay videos since then (judging by the various threads created for them), I genuinely believe it was the 360 version I was looking at. I love the art style and atmosphere as well, no complaints on that front.

im super pumped about the game but all these endorsed posts on GAF with these titles feel.. odd

not accusing anyone of anything and I actually appreciate the impressions but just havent seen it with much games

sadly no moneys to get it day 1

If anything I'm a bit happy that The Evil Within is still low key with it hype. Everything lately that has been off the charts, for example, Destiny, Titanfall, Watch_dogs, has lead people to massive dissapointment. So I'm rooting for a unexpected treat for most people on this one!

There is a perfectly good explanation for this. There is a few of us that are some pretty devote survival horror fans and this has been absolutely one of the biggest awaited titles for awhile now. The coverage on it has been less then favorable when it comes to actual terms of how mechanics work, what the story is about, etc so were just posting impressions, previews, etc to share the knowlege.

Honestly, I never tried shooting limbs. Really there is no point. You can spend a whole clip shooting an enemy in the abdomen and they won't go down. Always go for the head - ammo is scarce as it is. Wasting it on body shots is the last thing you want to do.

In the beginning outside the mansion there is some slowdown but there is a heavy DoF and mist effect. Once inside it felt smooth. No aggressive pop-in that I could see.

I haven't played TLOU.

Quickly, hide ! We've been discovered.

I believe it's because it's a mikami horror game and the old-school RE fans don't feel like it's being hyped enough so everyone tries to contribute.

Heck, personally it dates back from my "ZWEI runs on Unreal Engine 3" thread from a few years ago.

I love Pokken!
This isn't the next RE4 - this game is if RE4 grew some balls and stopped treating you like an action hero and took pleasure in punishing you, taking away the things you like - your ammo, your snappy aiming, you're paused inventory screen, your unlimited run and so on.

Take it from me, Mikami is back to school designers on a new type of modern TPS.

Blame Bethesda for holding these events for people to play then. If you went to an event to play one of your most anticipated games you wouldn't post an impressions thread about it?

edit: I suppose if there was a lot more hype from the general gaming public and media, then my thread wouldn't look out of place

Hell, if someone wants to make my iFruit girl evil endorsed, I wouldn't mind one bit.

It's Mikami October! I stumble into each of these threads with hype from the same people- it's brings me happiness.

This often happens with badly marketed but potentially great games, the fans have to go harder. Which can be obnoxious but still worthy excitement.

Heh - yeah, same here. The more Evil Within threads, the better!

It's probably going to be a Vanquish-type reaction. It'll do alright in Metacritic or whatever, dudebros won't be into it, but it'll have a devout cult following.

I was at the same event as the OP and, honestly, I barely recognise it from his description. I too played it on the higher difficulty level and found it rather pedestrian. Like a halfway house between REMake and RE4 but with neither the incredible art, atmosphere and creepiness of the former nor the pulse-quickening combat and exhilarating encounter design of the latter.

Gonna have to disagree with you there (on the one thing I can accurately judge just by watching videos of it). The art direction seems fantastic, and very much in line with the art of REmake. Everything from the wallpaper patterns and portraits, to the colors and detailed grit makes the whole mansion feel like a perfect baroque horror setting. And, from what I've seen in trailers and concept art, the other settings seem just as creepily realized.

+1

The art is fantastic. I though the game looked really sharp. Very atmospheric and detailed environments.

it's true that the marketing has been lacklusting. shame it has to come to this but ive been excited since day 1. always looked great to me and would have been sold on the premise and people involved alone *shrugs*

heck the fact that they're doing the same RE4 widescreen "trick" is enough to get me pumped

A couple tidbits I forgot to mention:

- You can double tap the action button to quickly kick open doors rather than the one press for slow opening animations - yes this is identical to RE4, but I feel in TEW it takes new meaning as stealth and running away can play a big part in encounters. Kicking a door will alert any enemies in a room and they are quite aggressive.

- There were a bunch of crows hanging out outside the mansion. And yes, shooting them drops ammo :D

Nice, this is great news. Thanks for the write up.

Side note, what does Akumu mean, anyone know?
Nightmare. No idea why they would use the same name twice for separate modes, even with the Akumu mode being set aside for extreme difficulty (seemed like it would've made more sense to name the second-hardest setting something else).

Sigh... I thought I would pick this game up after university during the summer.

But fuck it, I enjoyed what I played at fanexpo... and I might need something to tide me over.

Day 1.

With this talk of stealth, can you do stealth takedowns or kills?

Yeah. If you sneak up behind an enemy you can take them out with a button press. Problem is, getting close is dangerous and it's hard to know when they will turn around - the enemies have great twitch animations.

I didn't talk a lot about the burning mechanic, but it is really great. It is a better substitute for RE4's melee roundhouse kicks and suplexes. If you can get an enemy down, perhaps with a shot to the head or leg, you can sprint up and spend a match to burn them. This is useful for conserving ammo and taking enemies out quickly. Be wary though, you can only carry five of these at a time.
