DS4 thumb sticks might have a problem?

I should also mention that I've had to get mine replaced twice, because the right trigger wouldn't spring back properly and got stuck pressed down.
I take good care of my stuff, neither Cheeto or Dorito dust was anywhere to be seen.

I saw solutions on how to fix it on YouTube, so it's not a rare problem, but rather than risk them, I just cashed in on the warranty and got them replaced.

Yeah. I'm not happy about this. So far Amazon has been really good to me. I am doing what others do in that I send them back with a normal complaint after a month and they send me a free one. But they won't do this forever, just until no one notices. Right now it is saving me from shipping, I have prime, to Sony and talking to Sony people which I don't want to do. Not sure what I plan to do with this slightly ripped one. More than likely this thing has a 3rd party rubber on it in 5 months. I'll probably send this back to Sony or Amazon for one more go. But I know when the next MP hits that my thumbs are going to tear right into the next one.

Third party seems our only hope. Can't be much worse than this shit. This rubber compound is horrible in all facets. No grip, No grip surface after a month or two even with revised rubber. It's too soft and gets wet easily. It seems to soak in way too much moisture for rubber. All in all these are the most horrible grips I have ever dealt with. I'm just tired of this atm. Will be my 5 controller after this one goes down. Three early ones bit it and these ones will inevitably be the 4th and 5th.

However, by playing only SP I look to get another year or so out of this one without tears.

I want to also mention that I do use an exfoliant but I wash my hands and take care to get very little acid on my fingers. I wash my hands fairly well when playing long sessions of MP and no I don't dig my fingernails into these.

It's simply how fast your thumbs and fingers move on the surface of the rubber that creates this friction. The rubber is simply poor.

9 months in here, no stick issues on my end with my launch controller - just the slippery grease after ten minutes of playing.

I feel bad for everybody that's having issues, I'm just curious as to what's causing them for some of us but not all.

The left stick on my white ds4 feels a little loose or not as tight compared to the right.

Anyone notice that kind of thing on brand new controllers?

Hi there.

I live in France. I got my ps4 back in march.

I also use that DS4 on PC to play all my games.

I'm sorry to say that it has been perfect, no damage visible, no loose stick or anything...

So clearly there is still an issue in the production, but the design itself is really not at fault.

I've used it dozen of hours.

These will save your sticks and add a bunch more grip so your fingers do not slip off. I've been using them in intense sessions of infamous first light arenas with no problem at all.

Shouldn't have to use them just to keep the analogs from falling apart. I'm still using the original controller I got with my PS3 slim, and its analogs are still just fine. If they went to harder material and it's still falling apart so easily, then it has to be the shape of the analogs.

I decided to go ahead and put some X1 sticks on my DS4 last night since my original sticks had started to tear and were generally quite slippy.

The rough edge around the outside of them definitely helps my thumbs stay where they should be. They're a little taller too which is nice.

R2 trigger on my controller started sticking last night.

I guess, send back to sony for a replacement? It basically makes FFXIV unplayable. :(

Unlikely that it popped out, but try pressing the trigger from the end of it and towards the face of the controller.

I unfortuabtly had to give my brother in law who's away at college the bad news his DS4 developed a bubble on the right joystick and that his controller was faulty. He thought it was funny, but deep down inside I know he felt rage.

hmm so I have two roommates. One bought a PS4 at launch last year with 3 extra controllers.

The other roommate and I have been connecting the controllers to our PS3 to play NHL 2014.

Roomie who owns the PS4 is a little mad that the sticks are falling apart. I said I'd replace them.

so what is the process? How do I send them to Sony? I don't need an original receipt or something do I? I just need to pay the shipping to Sony and they will fix them?

i believe you need to call in for an RMA then they ship your controller to their service center. not sure if they ship you a coffin like they did with the ps4.

Add me to the list. Been playing a lot of Diablo 3 in the last week (fantastic btw) and my left thumbstick has started to develop a crack. Had the PS4 since December. Bought it from Amazon shipped to Australia so warranty is going to be a bitch if not impossible.

Are there any Red/Blue DS4 users having the same problems as with the stock ones?

After a couple of months of heavy FIFA play, I noticed how the rubber on my red DS4 started to stretch away from the analog-stick...I teared of too much of the rubber and you can now see the hard plastic part of the stick...will post pic later...but other than that the standard DS4 is still intact...they should have used the same material as the DS3 in my opinion...

I have no idea why people would recommend these things for the DS4. They hang too low, which results in them blocking the full range of motion of the sticks.

These are cheaper and higher quality, and best of all fit snugly on the top of the stick with no impediments to moving the sticks fully in all directions.

just replace the sticks, it's so easy.

Just do not buy the Aluminum ones as a lad at work did and they have friction on the pad causing them to stick :( and slippy as hell.

Replacing the sticks with longer ones like the XB1 sticks results in a looser feel. I don't want that. The tension on the stock DS4 sticks are pretty much perfect, whereas I find the tension on the XB1 sticks to be horrible. A simple 3 dollar bit of rubber fixed my issue without having to take apart my controller or alter the tension.

Got a good tut for that process and where you source the sticks?

My ebay auction for the Xbone sticks (4 for $6 shipped): http://www.ebay.com/itm/181472897240

I feel pretty good about the quality of the sticks I got from that source. I'm not 100% sure they are OEM, but they look the same as the ones in Xbone demo kiosks to me, and they're holding up great. I'd be wary of anybody selling the sticks in fashion colors or those made of metal. The picture on the auction is an accurate representation of what I received in the mail.

Tutorial I used: http://youtu.be/mVTLCcl4hr0

Be especially careful with the ribbon cables, and I recommend removing the battery and the clip-on tray the battery sits in, as it makes that ribbon cable easier to access and clamp down.

This post can't be from personal experience.

The "tension difference", if any, is grossly overstated. They are about 1mm taller, which isn't enough to even be all that noticable, and they are actually more comfortable as a result for my average sized hands. I also find that they improve my accuracy a bit, but that's subjective.

At any rate the tension remains higher than Xbone controllers that I've used.

Good man, thanks for the info.

I might try it on one of my pads and compare it to the OG.

My PS4 is a paper weight right now.

Second DS4 in for repair/replacement. Console switches itself off from time to time.

Sony went cheap on building these things. I cancelled my Destiny pre order and ordered it for Xbone instead.

Every time I ring Sony it's a one hour wait on hold.

I still have a launch ds4 with perfectly fine sticks. I did the switch to the xbox one sticks a week after release and stayed with them for a week, but went back to the originals. Been fine since than really.

Think I'm gonna switch back again cause the xbox one\s sticks look much better haha.

Hi everyone!

I wanted to do a proper tutorial time ago, but I couldn't because I don't have too much time lately...
Like some of you will have noticed, the DS4 battery is not as good as it could be. It takes near 7 hours to be fully discharged while the DS3 ones lasts at least the double.
So I started searching for a 2000mAh battery. I found a lot on ebay for less than 7€ and I thought that once opened I should give a try to the Xbone sticks, so I bought a pair for less than 2€ (in ebay too).
My DS4 sticks are perfectly, but I wanted to see which feels better.

First of all, sorry for the photo quality. I hadn't have time to build a photo studio while I was dismantling the pad.

1) There we have the new battery (2000 mAh) and the sticks
TaXApua.jpg

2) A comparison of the new sticks with DS3 and DS4 sticks. I really don't know what happen this gen that both (Sony and MS) have reduced the size of the sticks. I like bigger ones
cNrOLLO.jpg

1lBwS04.jpg

3) First: to separe the two sides.
b0jHWeQ.jpg

Keep the screws near. It's easy to lose them
Vgqp2Yl.jpg

4) Here we have a comparison of both batteries. Same size, double capacity.
7jpYrP9.jpg

zpF9sIv.jpg

5) Take care with this little motherfucker. Is easy to remove, but is even easier to forget and give it a pull...
TyIuaYM.jpg

The two pieces separately:
bbSqicW.jpg

6) Changing the sticks is pretty simple: You only have to pull from the bottom and put the new stick, pushing like when you press R3/L3 buttons
HYu5Cqo.jpg

duFacy5.jpg

7) Finally, put together everything, including the new battery
vIrfcBr.jpg

8) Final result:
ePPtLd1.jpg

Conclusions:
- Sticks are good. Is easy to notice the difference in materials. The xbox one sticks are made with better plastic and the grip is better too. Nevertheless I like the size and the height of the DS4 sticks.
I wouldn't say that one is better than the other. Is matter of preferences: For me, if you haven't any problems with the rubber, I think DS4 sticks are more comfortable.
- The battery change is fantastic. Couldn't say more...

Great work. I've heard of some drawbacks to using the xbone sticks, but the battery replacement is really useful for all. Shame that Sony couldn't justify a better battery in a $60 controller.

Hello everyone, new PS4 owner here. Despite my initial excitement for this new gen, i was wary of buying a PS4 until now, in no small part due to the thumbstick issue (the other part was the games i'm looking forward to the most not being out yet), but decided to get a TLOU bundle when i got my hands on a 10% off coupon at a local computer store. I figured that controllers in these new bundles should be fine by now and for the first 10 days everything seemed that way. During that time i have played about 70 matches of TLOU mp and sampled all the PS+ games that have accumulated since launch, all the time obsessively checking the thumbsticks without noticing any sign of wear and tear.

After that my 14 year old nephew visited me over the weekend and played a handful of hours each day. I told him about the issue and to be mindful of it, but didn't have time to monitor him all the time, nor did i play myself during that time. To cut to the chase, after the second day when i finally got around to play something myself, i noticed the left thumbstick feeling very slick. Upon closer inspection i saw that about 2/3 of the texture has worn off. No signs of flaking or tears in the rubber, it was just smoothed down.

I was pretty upset that this happened as soon as i let someone else handle the controller, but honestly, i can't even be mad at the kid, this really shouldn't be happening after less than two weeks of use. I've been letting him play my consoles since he was a toddler and all my DualShocks since PS1 are still perfectly fine, never had to fix or replace a Playstation controller before. The curious thing was, even after telling him that the rubber has worn down, he was completely oblivious to it, i had to explicitely point it out to him and tell him to lightly brush over both sticks to notice the difference. I wonder how many more casual players are the same and don't notice it at all, or brush it off as something normal.

Anyway, after some contemplation i decided against sending it in for a replacement for now, since it's just as likely that it would happen again someway down the line. I checked out some guides posted here and thought about modding the DS4 with new sticks, which didn't look too hard, but in the end decided to try out stick covers first. I went with these:

vbyyvUd.jpg

Can't recommend these enough guys :)

and so far i have to say i'm very happy with them. I'm using the convex ones, as the concave pair adds just a tiny bit too much height for my liking and they feel too smooth for me. I might even prefer the convex covers to the original DS4 sticks, since i've found the elevated rim on the sticks a bit uncomfortable at first. Even though i got used to it after the first few days, i like this new shape the covers give the stick, which is closer to the DS3 sticks, but with added grip.

So thumbstick covers turned out to be a good solution for me right now, but hopefully Sony can fix this for good, because this just doesn't cut it.

So mines just started pealing...can I contact Sony through email or live chat to get a replacement? I saw someone say I would have to pay for shipping even though it's under warranty? Also my sticker on the back of the controller with the C Number is worn off and gone is that something I need? I feel like im just going to have to buy a new controller and I don't have the funds for it..

Yeah you gotta contact before you send it in. Sony doesn't pay for shipping and the whole process takes 2-3 weeks. I don't think the sticker will matter much since all controllers are under warranty.

Honestly, you could get a new controller and then wait for it to happen again or just do the stick mod.

How long do you have to play til you start to see signs of wear? Or does it vary a lot? I've had my PS4 for about a month and a half and have put over 50 hours in and my sticks still seem ok but I'm still waiting to see that first crack.

Got my PS4 in June after E3, never put a lot on time into it until destiny came out and now the right trigger isn't working quite right any more. What the hell? Never had a controller break down this fast.

On topic I do notice the left thumb stick is a little more pitted then the right, not that it matters at this point. Time to walk down to GameStop and get a replacement.

Disappointing that people are still having issues. I'm really itching to get a PS4, but this makes me pretty wary. Guess I'll wait in hopes that Sony somehow fixes it
or until MGS V is out

So yeah, mine is beginning to fail. (I believe this controller is from end of 2013).

What has been retailers/sony's reaction in terms of warranty?

How the hell did Sony overlook this issue in the first place?

Did they even test the analog sticks before producing them?

Obvious answer to that question is 'No'. Sony probably didn't do extensive testing as the issue would have surfaced then.

I'm just going to use my DS4 until it starts to peel. Then I'll order some Xbone sticks and then perform the surgery.

Noticed that my left stick was starting to peel...thanks Destiny. So the 'best' course of action is just to by new sticks and/or thumb grips?

Some people doesn't like the Xbone sticks as they aren't the same height as the original DS4 sticks. It's a more extensive set of actions to replacement the sticks entirely, but compared to using some ugly analogue stick covers I'd say it's worth the effort.

Speaking for myself, I actually bough the stick covers but they look ugly and feel cheap so I don't care to use them anyway. But it's definitely easier to just snap them on and be done with it.

Both my early DS4s are having problems now. Will warranty them when I get the time.

The sticks on my Destiny bundle PS4 DS4 feel different, so I hope the rubber is more durable.

Oh, I like those because they're convex as on the DS3, which I've found more comfortable. I'm hesitant about opening up the DS4 to change them though, as I worry I'll screw up something.

You don't have to open the DS4 to use those, just slide them over the top of the sticks.

Which ones did you get? I would agree that Grip-its look pretty tacky, but i'm OK with the look of the convex Orb stick covers, as they don't stand out too much. I like the softer feel too, since i found the original sticks a bit uncomfortable during longer sessions.

It took me about 8 months and 10 games before a tiny tear appeared on the left stick. It hasn't yet worsened, but I guess it's only a matter of time.

Mine has started to fall to pieces now. I'm a bit stuck with what to do though as A - the Xbox sticks look too high and small for me so I wouldn't want to put those in and B - the controller has developed an intermittent issue where holding R2 makes the controller think I am giving a left input on the left stick. So if I hold R2, for example while applying a health pack in TLOU or shooting in Destiny, my character strafes left. It only happens sometimes and once it's started happening there's no way to fix it - resetting console and controller doesn't help.
I'm just worried it would take too long to send it back to Sony.

As an aside, what other thumbsticks could I put in? Are there any third party mimics?
