$100?! Is there something special about that one or is it just out of print?

I have the old R1 DVD and the Italian BD.

Still hoping for a region A BD though.

Would NOT surprise me if there is a blu-ray announcement from Scream Factory soon...

This time last year I was an unregistered lurker. This year I will most definitely be participating, I've got a cardboard box full of horror VHS and DVD's I need to get to watching, as well as a bunch of blu rays from Scream Factory and their ilk that this will motivate me to work through. Might watch a few beloved classics that put me in the Halloween mood as well, like some Carpenter or Fulci.

Went through the several Netflix regions, here is what is up. For the sake of saving space (and time), any movie that repeated in another region is not being twice. Also note that some of these might expire by the time October rolls around.

So, what's the deal with spoilers for this event? Last year some people marked them but some didn't. I didn't really see anyone getting mad for unmarked spoilers either. Should we mark them just to be safe, or is it not necessary?

It's best to play it safe and mark them since a lot of people use the thread for recommendations.

Edit: Should I add a note about spoilers in the OP? I don't really recall it being an issue before.

People were really cool last year. I remember people would openly talk about plot points of certain movies without spoiler tags, but would maybe spoiler tag specific aspects of certain kills, or maybe parts that they thought should be tagged. I think people were pretty good about self-governing last year.

I'm baa-aack

I am so game.

NetFlix has some quality shit, too.

Yes Yes Yes Yes YES!!

Love this time of year! I know I'm somewhat of an anachronism on GAF; I don't like gore horror as a rule, despise torture porn, and seldom watch anything filmed after 1990 (hell, most of my favorite movies predate America's involvement in Vietnam), but I enjoy these threads immensely.

Great idea with the mandatory films! I have a ROAN disc of White Zombie that's very watchable, and it's one of my absolute favorite films from the pre-code age... And Ravenous is excellent and well worth revisiting! I'll watch both with pleasure....

Last year, I did a themed version of the 31 Days of Horror, sticking to werewolf movies throughout. Here's a recap:

BSN6's 31 Days of Horror 2013 Lycanthropy Edition
  1. Bad Moon (1996)
  2. Werewolf: The Beast Among Us (2012)
  3. I Was A Teenage Werewolf (1957)
  4. The Beast Must Die (1974)
  5. Werewolf of London (1935)
  6. The Wolfman (2010)
  7. Silver Bullet (1985)
  8. Fury of the Wolfman (1970)
  9. Never Cry Werewolf (2008)
  10. The Wolf Man (1941)
  11. Werewolves on Wheels (1971)
  12. Werewolf Fever (2009)
  13. The Undying Monster (1942)
  14. Ginger Snaps (2001)
  15. Ginger Snaps II: Unleashed (2004)
  16. Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning (2004)
  17. Moon of the Wolf (1972)
  18. Skinwalkers (2006)
  19. The Company of Wolves (1984)
  20. Werewolf in a Girl's Dormitory (1961)
  21. Wolfen (1981)
  22. The Werewolf (1956)
  23. Blood and Chocolate (2007)
  24. Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)
  25. The Howling (1981)
  26. The Curse of the Werewolf (1961)
  27. Kibakichi (2004)
  28. An American Werewolf in London (1981)
  29. Wolf (1994)
  30. Dog Soldiers (2001)
  31. Trick 'r Treat (2007)

It was a lot of fun to dig around for the required number of werewolf films, and it helped narrow the field somewhat so that I wasn't just drowning in my absurdly large collection... I'll give some thought to what "theme" I'd like to pursue this year, but it's definitely something I'd like to do again.

And here are my lists from the first two years for my own reference if nothing else...

I am expecting no less than the masterpiece of lists that you went with last year.

I don't know what it's going to look like yet, but I do know that these are things that will be happening:

-It's going to be one new-to-me film per day, so 31 films total
-The writeups are (hopefully) going to be more in-depth across the board, as I felt that because of the schedule last year, some films that should have gotten more elaboration in my write-ups didn't because of the need to keep barreling along
-There will be themes again, even for the shorter first week: I don't know what they are yet, which is scary, but I'm resourceful

Nice. I did like 10 last year. Hopefully I beat that at least. Some of my favorite movies ever came from it (namely Cabin in the Woods! ).

Woo! Best month ever. I got 33 last year but didn't participate with any posts. I'll try to stay along with the thread this year.

Yup, there are TONS of great recommendations in these threads. Trick 'r Treat, Maniac, Curse of Chucky, Cabin in the Woods, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, and Suspiria were all found via recommendation and I loved all of them.

It's okay. It had some cool ideas, but the family aspect needed way more screen time, imo. Olivia's character and the daughter were utterly wasted, and the main character's beef with religion was merely glossed over.

The dynamic between the priest and the detective were good. Lowkey, the priest was the best character, and it wasn't his film. Hell, the best part of the film was only like 5 minutes and merely backstory...lol

I enjoyed it, but nah. I wouldn't overrate it. Having a more grounded (using loosely) possession film was kinda neat tho.

I'm gonna top it off like I do every year by also listening horror music (I'm into metal so there's tons to keep me going for a month on my journey to and from work 1 hour each way)

Playing a few video games
Resi evil, P.T, Silent Hill PSP etc

But I hardly ever read books. If I do its biographies.

Can anyone reccomend their Top 5-10 must read horror books, I'll try and add a few to my kindle. Is this the wrong place to ask? I aplogise.

So I'm trying to put together a Body Horror themed week, but I'm one movie short.

Is Excision a body horror movie? I'm trying to go in as blank as possible for my movies so I don't really know anything about it and Wikipedia doesn't list it in the body horror entry.

I don't mind you asking here, but you might have more luck finding recommendations in the Horror Fiction thread.

I'll join in this year. I need to make up for my shame of flaking on the 50/50 challenge extremely early on.

Hopefully there are a lot of horror movies to watch on netflix.

I'm extremely busy with home projects for the next few months, so I'm going to aim for one every other night.

Requisite rewatches:

The Thing
Alien
Trick'r Treat

I'm going to rewatch Lake Mungo, my favorite first watch from last year. So that will leave 10-11 new flicks to chase down. Really looking forward to it.

On that note, I cannot recommend Lake Mungo enough. A very slow burn documentary style ghost story. Not a single jump scare. It's kept me up nights, and been in my thoughts regularly for a year now.

Clive Barker - The Damnation Game or The Books of Blood
Poppy Z Brite - Lost Souls or Exquisite Corpse
Jack Ketchum - Ladies Night or Off Season
Bret Easton Ellis - American Psycho
Caitlin R Kiernan - The Red Tree
Stephen King - 'Salem's Lot
Edward Lee - Flesh Gothic
Brian Keene - The Rising
John Skipp & Craig Spector - The Bridge
Joe R Lansdale - The Nightrunners

I'm sure there's a ton I've forgotten, but that's a start.

Yeah, if you want. Some people in past years went over 31.

Looks like I hit 36 according to my final post in last year's thread, haha!

Can we request that people also post what format each movie is this year?
Meaning whether it was a DVD, Blu-Ray, VHS, YouTube, on Netflix, on cable, etc.

For example, I posted all of my watched movies like this in last year's thread:

#. [movie title] (format)

Knowing what format people used was extremely useful for me in determining the best way to watch recommended movies in previous years and I think it'd be helpful for this year's newcomers too! :)

Love Lake Mungo.
There is that one jump scare near the end though, it is a really effective one because of the slow build to it.

Excision is fantastic and I would consider it body horror.

I'd classify Excision as a body horror movie; IMDB lists it as a horror film. It's not in the same vein as, say, The Fly or Videodrome is a body horror film, but it qualifies.

Cool, thanks guys. That'll be my Day 7 for Body Horror week then.

I'm kicking myself now for not picking up Jacob's Ladder on Blu-ray when I saw it for 5 bucks.

I love this.

Totally gonna watch 31 horror movies throughout the month.

There are tons I haven't seen so this will give me incentive to finally sit down and watch them.

I'm in, since I'm also working on the 50 Movie challenge (which I've already completed, but I want to see how many movies I can watch in a year).

I'm assuming rewatching a movie is allowed and that it counts towards your 31 movie goal? I purchased The Thing recently and I think I'll use it for this.

Yeah, as long as you re-watch it in October and post your fresh thoughts on it.

Heh. I'm pretty sure I grabbed it because of the first year's thread and its been sitting here unwatched ever since.

It definitely has the feel of one, but it's more psychological than anything else.

And here I just finished watching all the Nightnare on Elm Street movies for the first time. I'm looking forward to this though.

awesome thread, I don't think that I will be able to watch the whole 31 days but I have been looking for a really good horror movie, but the kind that dosen't focus on jump scares but actual tension and more atmospherics settings, or even monsters P:

been googling some recomandations that you guys have posted, good stuff, I will start with those
