Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works - 01

Enjoyed this episode, surprisingly Shirou didn't get on my nerves as much, then again its just the first episode. And here's to hoping from here on out the plot won't be always focused on Shirou's damn house and kitchen.

Anyways highlights of the episode, motha-fucking Kiritsugu flashbacks.
It was just great how Kiritsugu expressed his mannerisms in that hospital scene, you could tell he is a broken man and this is further elaborated on in his explanations of the reality of the ideal of being a super hero to young Shirou.

In addition,
was of course, the excellent battle animation between Saber and Lancer. Personally I enjoyed the summoning sequence the most, that short but great hype build-up to Saber's appearance was just too good.

Oh and for the OP and ED. Both are good, however I feel like Kalafina's ED is a bit lacking, this is surprising compared to their work in Fate/Zero and Aldnoah.Zero. I could tell in the ED they attempted to do a callback to Fate/Zero's 2nd OP "to the beginning;" I could hear the same/similar lyrics and buildup, but it didn't feel as grandiose. I'll need to listen to the full version.

Donten ni Warau - 02

Another solid episode. Middle bro is having complex issues and tries to live up to his Big Bro, which he always fails to. I think a Kamina is bound to happen.
Big Bro used to be in the military but is now called a traitor by their leader. It's revealed that both are on the hunt for the orochi vessel, with different means to use it

So now we have three clear groups; the top military squad Yamainu, the cloud brothers, and the madmen locked inside Gokumonjo

Log Horizon S2 E2

Calling it now, idol is a boy in a girls avatar, I do really like the character and hope she (he) joins Log Horizon at the end of this raid. Like the dynamic for this raid should be very exciting next week.

Log Horizon 20

Well I'll be....
Shiroe figured out how to turn the mortal, immortal
. He has ascended to god status now.

Edit: ^ Oh wow, I just remembered I have/had an Epyon model. I think it was like one of my first Gundam models, if not the first. It was either 1/144th scale or 1/100th scale, and I believe I got it from HobbyLinkJapan.

Man, I should start putting together models again.

Edit: vvv Oh my. Perfection indeed.

Fate/stay night UBW 01

Shiro was never the character in Fate I had a problem with. Granted, I only started watching recently, but there's someone down the line who I find much more dislikable. I've seen this material at least twice before, this version mostly expanded on it a little more and I will admit that the animation is nice. Not sure how I want to review this series. The animation is nice and everyone knows it, and while I'm not super knowledgable on the craft of it, I don't want that to be the only point of discussion. But in discussing the story, it's talking about something lots of people already know and have probably made up their mind on, so I'm not sure what new angles could be gleamed from it.

Like the OP and ED.

That said, I'm glad we're starting on regular half-hour length episodes.

You'll get used to it. Maybe. They have 5 different versions of Saber for a reason. Gotta sell that merchandise.

I'm really loving the animation, even though viewing the faces from the sides still looks odd (not sure what they're doing with the noses). Can't wait to see some certain fights in the future. I'm also wondering if they'll tie in some bits of the other routes into this series.

Well we have Heaven's Feel route being animated into a movie. Though don't know if it's a trilogy.

I was mostly referring to the Fate route, but I guess there's the original anime for that. (eww)

Still can't wait for the Heaven's Feel movie. I wonder if it'll just be one movie or multiple. If you cut out all the cooking scenes, I'm pretty sure HF could be condensed to one 2 hour 30 minute movie.

Gundam G-Reco 1

What the hell was this. It looks so retro. The art style, the sound effects, music, the kicking / smacking women, everything is so 70s/80s.

That commercial break animation too lol

Why is everyone dancing in the ending. What. But the pink haired girls' design is awesome.

The character designs are a part of this, but even the base character art can feel really flat. It becomes really glaring when the background art is overblown, but the characters align themselves to the camera without perspective, and it feels like they stand on some sort of separate plane from the background work.

I can tell a lot of money is being put into stay/night, and there is a lot of positive things to appreciate about certain visual elements. Some of the CG backgrounds and effects really have a way of popping, but the show as a whole comes across as visual unambitious and off-putting because of the understated character animation. There's a lot of really bland framing as the camera consistently pulls itself back from its subject matter to very plainly show off the background work. Unfortunately that background work just doesn't really mesh well with the character's themselves, and the awkward scaling and mismatched lighting really make for something that doesn't come together as well as it should.

It's interesting because Souten Kouro one of the few RotTK-related works produced in Japan that has Cao Cao as a protagonist and depicts him in a positive light. I never watched the entire show because it took something like two years to be fully translated, but what I did watch was a mix of grotesque hyper-violence and flamboyant badassery, almost like a mix of Sengoku Basara and Fist of the North Star. It's decent.

Why did it take so long to translate this show? I remember it being impossible to find subs when this was initially released.

Cao Cao needs some love once in a while too. Lui Bei can't always be the hero!

Chaika Avenging Battle 01

Yay Chaika is back. Was hoping to see what will happen to Vivi. Hopefully they won't drag it out.

FSNUBW 01
High school hijinx the anime.
If only!

Log Horizon S2 02

I still can't get over how they still use Database as the OP. Best OP ever.

New waifu appears.

Parasyte 01

That CG walking scene. That boob grab.

Otherwise a strong first episode. Will continue watching.

Is it OK if I ask for anime recommendations here?

I used to love anime years ago. I was a big fan of Full Metal Alchemist (original series), Trigun, and Samurai Champloo. I'm so out of the loop now and have been for five or six years. Could someone recommend me a show to get back into anime?

Several of you said to give it 2 more episodes. I did. Not sure what is so special but things finally started happening.

1. A lot of craziness/silliness as entertainment value. The start already has some but, after a while, the show emphasizes this.
2. Character dynamics, especially Lelouch and Suzaku, with the whole role reversal angle, its parallels and contrasts.
3. Interesting themes. If the external plot insanity doesn't melt your brain, there are a few thematic threads holding together the core.
4. Rollerskating robot action, especially at the start of the series. Several battles tend to get boring later, but the last one picks up again.

There are folks who think the show doesn't work on rewatch because you already know all the surprises and plot twists, which is point one, but I respectfully disagree. It's still fun enough for me and I got more out of the other aspects on rewatch. That said, there are people who just don't find any of it to be interesting or entertaining enough, usually because they're too serious in mindset and can't take the excess wackiness. Which is fine. The series has wide appeal but isn't necessarily for everyone.

Saber is Takeuchi's waifu so I always just come to expect more of her.

Was busy all day, finally got around to watching some anime.

Log Horizon s2e2

Episode was a lot better than the previous, glad we're getting back up to the pacing of the first series. Aside from an out-of-place fart joke, I really enjoyed the new character and her interactions with Naotsugu. William Massachusetts seems surprisingly chill since the last time we saw him.

The split focus on Shiroe and Akatsuki will be interesting, and it puts the ending to the previous episode in more favorable light for me.

Fate/Stay Night 1

"Senpai" spam and harem elements were really annoying, but hopefully they're not given too much focus, because the action in this episode was really quite amazing. Swordplay was really well-choreographed, and the Noble Phantasm scene was incredible.

Oh, and Fujimira is love.

Perfect episode for the match, only criticism was the short recap at the start that felt unnecessary and that one girl thats all over Furuya kun. Mei's face and Yuki kaji's voice were priceless.

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works - 1

Well, this sure is a very good execution of the material. Can't say it is too surprising coming from this studio, given Fate/Zero, but making a weaker story better through adaptation is often more impressive than taking one that's already strong enough and giving it a great or merely acceptable treatment.

Gundam Reconguista in G - 3

Oh Tomino. This is exactly why anime fans tend to have such a love/hate relationship with you.

But don't get me wrong. I'm enjoying this. It's silly yet entertaining and oddly refreshing in all of its whimsical jokes and kind of dated ways.
