Playstation TV Thread: Vita Who?

I still need to swing by Gamestop after work to pick up my copy of The Evil Within. I may possibly grab one of these but I'm still on the fence. The lack of Netflix is baffling.

I own a Vita and a bunch of software already, so I'm ready to rock right out of the box.

Does the unit come with any freebies? Free PSN credit like the PS4? Anything like that?

Nothing. Contents of box include:

  • PlayStation TV Unit
  • Power Adapter
  • HDMI Cable
  • Quick Start Guide
  • Other Paperwork, Safety Guide perhaps

Plus there was an insert stuck outside of the box (between the cardboard and display sleeve) stating for best PS4 remote play experience to connect it via wire. Seemed tacked on and thought of at the last second.

Hm. So initially I thought I'd play something off of Netflix or Youtube to test out the streaming capabilities. Those apps aren't compatible though and I wasn't aware. It's not a complete killjoy because I have so many Netflix capable devices but color me surprised at such glaring omissions in an app library.

Sony needs to get things in order quickly. I'd love for this thing to be a Chromecast/ Apple TV/ Roku caliber video streamer that plays the most kick ass games and can remote into my PS4. First impression of this thing is that it is far from that.

It will play a lot of my Vita games on a bigger screen though. And the novelty of that should carry it for a few months for me. But this machine needs compatibility updates like nobody's business.

Sony you should have launched with more apps. Shame on you.

Going to pick this up from Best Buy tonight after work (assuming payment goes through today) and see how well it works. I'll have to pick up a 2nd PS4 controller later on for convenience sake. but for now I'll just use my 1 PS4 controller and switch between systems.

Nah, the pure $99 model comes with just enough to have it running
The $140 bundle comes with a controller, a memory card, and a free game. You get two free games if you go to Walmart (It's Sly Cooper:Thieves in Time which is totally worth it if you do not have it already).
I think the extra $40 is worth it because the memory cards do not come cheap and getting one thrown in for free is a deal.
Edit: I hope Netflix and Hulu Plus get patched this week. Amazon Video is not yet an app on Vita yet.

You can at least watch Youtube using the browser. That being said, I have to agree that it is sad to launch with less apps than Chromecast.

Is the quality supposed to be this poor?

Hooked it up and have only navigated a bit of the UI, but the resolution is pretty low...
From what I seen on videos, the PS TV UI has issues but the games run just fine.

Man... maybe I should hold off on buying this then. Where I want to place it in my house, I have no access to Ethernet cables connected to my router. If the thing will run like garbage with remote play without hard wiring it, I should probably just pass... especially without Netflix or any other major apps. Still bummed I can't play Lumines on it; yet I'm a sucker for gaming hardware.

I don't know... we'll see.

Make sure you go into Settings to set the screen resolution, maybe yours is something funky. I just got mine, looks just fine at 1080i. PSP games are super pixelated of course...

Wait no netflix? I was thinking of getting one so my dad could watch movies without me lugging my consoles downstairs. Stupid Sony, how do they get things so right with the ps4 but botch everything vita related

Maybe it's the crappy hotel TV I'm using, but I'm actually surprised at how good things look, considering early reports.

P4G, Muramasa, and Dragon's Crown look pretty good. PSOne games look OK. Some PSP games are OK, others not so much (FFT: WOTL looks pretty bad).

If stuff looks this good on my home TV, I'll be pleased.

Does the database have to be rebuilt every time I put the card into my vita or tv and vice versa or am I missing something?

Neither system earlier seemed to remember icon placement.

I think they may be it. The games run at 720p while the UI still runs on the original PS Vita resolution of around 544p.

Also my guess why no 1080p is supported is because to reduce cost is my guess. 1080i looks way worse than 720p for some reason.
Edit: A forum post explains why...
720P is better for motion, sports, etc. Each and every shot is a still frame with all 720 line on the same frame/field.
1080i may have more total lines of resolution, but if you freeze-frame, you are only getting either 540 lines in a field, or if you capture the frame, you get two fields with pictures taken 1/60th of a second apart. If the fields are capturing fast motion it can cause jitter.

I actually think it's a bad idea as it addresses only two of the reasons Vita has sold the way it has: price and the state of dedicated handhelds. It doesn't tackle the lack of marketing, the insane memory solution or the frankly horrendous software library for anyone who isn't a NeoGAF member. In fact, PSTV has a worse software library than Vita does. Instead of being in a declining category Sony half-heartedly launched it into a market that has yet to see a real success.

Well, to be fair, some of these issues are insurmountable and/or complex.

Designing the PSTV was relatively cheap, since it obviously piggybacks on Vita R&D. That's part of what makes the venture so viable. Adding on an international ad campaign would be extremely expensive and would undermine that. It's also quite reasonable to assume their own internal marketing metrics are okay with a lower buy through simply because it was relatively cheap to get to market.

As for the memory cards, assuming the reasoning for the proprietary cards is anti-piracy (likely imo), there's no way they'd get rid of them. The Vita is already dealing with all the avenues of attack via PSP save game exploits, and opening it up to new vectors isn't likely.

'Worse library than vita' is sort of a given? I mean, it simply can't play some Vita games. But it still has access to ps1, psp, and much of the vita library. It can also do PSnow and remote play ps4s. Given that the vita has touch, gyro, and backtouch, any console vita device w/o that would obviously have a 'worse' library.

It doesn't, you can set the resolution, I have mine at 1080i.
Eh, that's not too bad I guess. Still, strange they would release a device like this in 2014 that doesn't support 1080p. Kinda defeats the whole purpose it streaming your ps4 games, if their visuals are being downgraded.

At least it is not as much of a downgrade as the Wii U gamepad. That one is like 480p or something.

So The Walking Dead S1 is on the compatibility list but I am stopped dead at the screen that talks about the autosave icon as no button presses on my Dualshock 3 are registered.

Am I correct in assuming that a Dualshock 4 is needed for games that have touch components? I tried pressing L3 and R3 on my controller to bring up the touch panel but nothing happened.

Anyone have any tips?

Just gave mine a spin during lunch.

Persona 4 runs fine. Looks kind of meh, but I will need to look at it on the Vita again later just to compare. The characters looked kind of chibi, which is not an impression I remember having when I played it previously. Downloaded the PSNow app for giggles, but then I put in my memory card to learn that it cannot access local storage and a memory card at the same time. So that 1GB is effectively useless if you're planning on going digital.

Internet is wireless. Download speeds were okay for the update and app I downloaded. Will move my router back to the entertainment center, plug my PS4 in, and try remote play after work. PSTV is in the bedroom.

Tried controls with both DS3 and 4. I think the DS3 is perfectly acceptable but will probably use a DS4 for serious remote play if such a thing proves possible.

Suikoden loaded up okay, although it was removed from the compatibility list.

There's this obnoxious screen of Sony advertisements just to the right of the home screen that I couldn't figure out a way to close. Really, really hate shit like that but it is what it is.

The main question now is going to be whether it makes sense to swap memory cards, use my spare memory card and put up with the content manager, or subscribe to PS+ for cloud saves. Swap memory cards seems most likely but will check out other options later.

I remember there is something in settings that replicate touch. I think it was L1 + R1 held together. Try looking at the settings. The game will save your place.

You have to enable the touch panel in the settings screen by holding the PS button.

Why, please elaborate.
- Limited to 720p/1080i

- Plays a small fraction of Vita exclusive titles.

- Does not indicate on the download list whether or not the game or app is compatible.

- The storefront will suggest games and apps that are not compatible.

- Either they've hidden or removed the Bilinear Filter outright for PSP titles.

- Plays a fraction of PSP and PS1 titles that the Vita can.

- Pathetic App support.

- NO NETFLIX?!

-Crashed on me already.

What the purpose of this thing? It's laughable compared to any other video streaming device.

Also the streaming seems different than it does on the Vita. The image quality is better, but the response time is god awful. This is coming from someone whose router isn't really good for the PS4 streaming stuff (but somehow works good for Stream's home streaming.)

So you copy and paste this from.... where? ;P

The reason is remote play turns off the wifi for a brief moment when you first start it up. Watch the wifi indicator int he top left corner, as soon as it reappears, push the PS button and join the party.

You can then head back to the remote play screen and it will connect without d/c you. Works great.
Holy shit, this works on the Vita! All this time I could have been party chatting during remote play? Son of a bitch! Thank you so much.

If Sony really didn't give this much of a shit about this device the least they could do was add some "unsupported" mode in the options that let you use any game or app at your own discretion.

I've tried mine hooked up on a 42 and 60 inch plasma. The UI looks pretty jaggy on both. I had bad remote play lag on wireless from one room away from my router/ps4. I plugged it up the the ethernet right beside the PS4 and it was still kind of laggy. Non-remote play games look okay but I'm not sure if this will be a worthwhile purchase for me. It's super limited and the drawbacks, such as the more limited library, don't necessarily exceed the positives.

I'm leaning toward returning mine right now.

I've just got to wonder what in the world SCEA is doing in regards to supporting these services. My guess is most people don't buy PSOne games since they get such weird stipulations on some big titles. If people were buying them they might be more inclined to work things out behind the scenes.

Oh sorry I should have clarified. I don't have one yet and wanted to make sure you could. Good news!

Thanks!

No problem. I checked a video and the menu is pretty much a replica of the Vita one.
Since I am not a Vita hater, I will give an impressions post once I get home and mess around with it. Kotaku seems to give good early impressions from what I gathered.

Did you try disabling direct connect in your ps4?
