The Evil Within PC Performance Thread

So do you guys think the way I'm playing, default 1080p/30fps max is better than the PS4 version?

I'm disappointed with the frame rate and 30fps lock.

Should I have just gotten the PS4 version since it's almost in parity with each other?

Even if the PC version only matches the PS4 version, which I'm pretty sure if you can maintain 30 it's already surpassing it, it's always better to buy the PC version.

apparently the PS4 runs at 20-30.. it's not locked to 30.

PC would still be a better experience, I think.

I think PC, features wise, is the better choice because though you may be stuck at 1080p/30fps now - in the future you may have hardware that can push beyond that. The PS4 will never be able to do such.

Will a factory OC'd 970 b e able to downsample from 4K -> 1080? I'm skeptical as to whether I'll be able to use Nvidia control panel to do this though, if this is all openGL stuff.

On my OCed 970 downsampling from 4k averages in the 20s in framerate, so no. Does work with resolutions below that at 30 locked. Currently running at 1620, might try 1800 later.

You'll be able to use it easily, just have to enable DSR's general settings.

Apparently the PS4 version drops into the 20s on occasion

It's when you render at a resolution higher than your screen and let your GPU or display shrink it down to fit your screen. Gives you improved motion clarity, higher quality aliasing, and an overall much cleaner looking image.

Here's an example in RE5

Goddamn, is that downsampling from 8k or something? Cause if 8xMsaa looks that bad in comparison, this must be running a silky smooth 2 fps.

PC has faster loading, that makes it better by default, along with surprisingly decent performance on cards well below the 4gb they shat out of their asses.

It's worth pointing out that it's highlighting one of MSAA's biggest weaknesses - transparencies. So that particular section is actually not receiving any aliasing.

I was downsampling from 5120x2880.

The mystery deepens.

It seems it really does load some DirectX11-Dlls for some part of the rendering.

I checked, neither Rage nor Wolfenstein do that... Both call OpenGL32.dll instead (that does make sense somewhat), which The Evil Within doesn't interestingly enough.

I don't actually have much of a clue and if I'm even using the right tool to get valid information, but that seems a bit wierd.

Alright, we might want to do some digging here - and I'm clearly not hacky enough to do that. So where's our code-gurus?

in any case: clarification needed.

Didn't really research too much on the PS4 version. But if it really dips than PC by default for sure.

Kind of scared to do it! Seeing the disclaimer kind of scares me away.

I don't want to ruin my tv. Maybe I'll try it on a smaller tv.

It's fine. Plenty of us have been doing it for a long time with no problems. Your drivers will prevent it from actually outputting in a way your TV won't accept usually anyway. It's definitely worth doing.

How are people downsampling? With GeDoSaTo or custom resolutions?

Custom resolution on a GTX 980, 1620p to be precise. DSR is currently pretty unstable with my set up. Hopefully future drivers will make it more "universally compatible."

DOes setting a custom resolution in nvidia work as a downsampling method for this for those without dsr?

Absolutely, yes. Just make sure to disable scaling under "desktop size & position."

Oh hey setting up downsampling was easier than I thought it would be! Fun times ahead since durante's thing never actually worked for me in most games.

GeDo is DX9 only, so if you were testing on mostly DX11/OGL games that explains it not working. In games it's designed for (DX9) I've had great compatability.

it's possible to put two command line in the shortcut on desktop ? I should use comma or something to separate them ?

just a space. make sure you put a + before both commands.

I'm going to go try forcing vsync in NVidia's drivers to see if that resolves the whole frame pacing issue.

I tried downsampling on Alien and I must be blind but the game looked the same :/ I also tried on Batman Oranges benchmark and I lost like 20frames, and the game still looked the same, so I didnt bother trying to downsample other games :(

Again, Im sure the problem is on my end, sicne everyone seems to rave about downsampling

So how is people on the lower systems performance holding up?, if you managed 30fps on chapter 1/2 does it maintain it as it goes on?.

Alien Isolation still has heavy aliasing while downsampling, but it still helps at 2880 which is what I've been playing that at to maintain 60 with vsync. 3200x1800 is my sweet spot for the Evil Within at 30 FPS, looks so much better than 1080P in terms of IQ. Still some aliasing, but the shimmering is heavily reduced.

And I'm just using custom resolutions via my 780Ti.

Im using a R 290x. Its wierd though...after entering the fps 60 cap command, it doesnt feel like its 60fps. This is just judging from the first area alone. feels like a 30 fps lock.

Any news on fixing the stuttering? 4gb of VRAM here.

It's not VRAM. It's either your CPU or some bug. Geforce-users try disabling screen-space-reflections. Those were buggy in Wolfenstein with Nvidia-GPUs as well (sometimes at least). Entering the Mansion
That will degrade your graphical fidelity quite a bit non-the-less...

Than again, those reflections are broken anyways. On both vendors GPUs... like here (using AMD):

15515361976_fea29cb8b9_o.png

What the fuck is that supposed to be - clearly it's not a reflection. And it's the same (or similar) on Geforce-GPUs... In fact, I was using one when I first noticed...

Amazing, never knew you could do this. I only used Durantes program for it before.

Lol, seriously? - you've just missed a couple of years of Downsampling-bliss ;-) It also works on AMD as well (well not just as well - but it does since a quite some time... actually it got worse after the HD 5000- and 6000- Series. Before that, 4K-Downsampling was kinda easy.)

Sorry for double-posting, btw (again), hit the wrong "quote" button... (it's somewhat getting late here)

I was worried about this game but it's running fine for me.

GTX670 2 gig
3770k
16 gig ram

Running smooth at 1080p with the FPS limiter off and without the letterbox. It's like they're trying to scare people with these insane recommended specs.

To be fair I haven't ran FRAPS or anything to check the FPS but it feels fine to me, haven't noticed any stuttering.

I hold 60fps almost the whole time, it just doesn't always feel 60fps. Others seem to be having the same issue.

Hope they fix the game up soon because it's fun as hell, hiccups aside.

You don't need 900 card. Nvidia just being an ass to sale them cards. With mod drivers, any recent Nvidia card can do it. I am doing it with SLI Titans.

Yeah, big bad MF moneygrabbing duchebags they are...

(actually, they're going to enable DSR on Kepler with their upcoming driver which will also have some performance-enhancements. Just be patient for a few days. - It's not gonna take long, those Ryse-benchmarks pissed them off quite a bit)

i7-2600K @ 3.6 GHZ
GeForce GTX 570
8GB DDR3

I hear this game is really brutal on machines. Should I even bother?

I think you'll be fine if youre okay with the 30fps lock. Basing that just on what i've read in this thread and on other sites.

Is the 720p resolution setting messed up for anyone else? When I set this resolution, the entire rendered aspect ratio of the game is squished (beyond the already letterboxed presentation). 1080p and 1600x900 are fine, but anything below that is distorted.

Edit: Seems like what's happening is that at 720p the game is actually rendering at 1280x1024 (4:3), which my (16:9) monitor then stretches horizontally. Uh, cool.

Well I'm disappointed in the performance numbers I'm seeing others are having with this game. Looks like I will be barely maintaining 30fps with everything up on my GTX 760. I'm down sampling Alien Isolation from 1620p > 1080p with everything up all the the way maintaining a smooth 45-60fps and find that to be a better looking game. Well here's hoping they patch it or something.

I am playing on a 560ti with i5 3570k with everything high or max except for aa i turned that off and it seems to be working fine im on chapter 2

I have a 760 and I've been running at 1080p 60FPS just fine.

white balance = fixed! i knew something looked off. pretty gross filter imo, wasn't adding anything. thanks again.

after
So you can turn off the filter which makes the game look better....or not? I mean they put the filter for an obvious reason - to make it feel more creepy? idk, but is everyone turning off the filter or?

There is a huge difference without the filter, makes the adams family house look like it was on desperate housewives.

So no.
