The Evil Within PC Performance Thread

I'm halfway through my download. I'll inform how it performs on my laptop...

My laptop specs are:

i7 4500U 1.8 GHz with Turbo Boost Upto 3 GHz
8GB RAM
2GB Radeon 8850m GDDR5 VRAM

If I could play it at 1080p/30fps or even at 768p/30fps (laptop's native RES) then all will be swell.

Will update when I get it started.

And here I am, as you requested.

A little update for anyone who wants to know what we're talking about:
PC Specs: i5 2500K @ 4.2
4GB RAM Gskill Pi Cas 7
1 GB 5770 Vapor X @ 900/1400

Long time since I last upgraded it, as you can see, but still I tried and my home's not burning!

-Everything high, enabled and FXAA.
-720p: Fraps shows 30 fps almost all the time and upper 20s during heavy lighting effects scenes. Those using sub 1080p monitors will be pleased.

-900p: 20+ fps most of the time. Noticeable drops, but still... "playable".

-1080p: Not so different from previous resolution.

I'll wait for DF and then think if I should get it for X1.

Thanks, sounds like it should be playable at 720p then!

My settings with default framerate option:
D114E621E63ADBB4AE755FD95F9D9EE09041878E
My specs:

AMD Phenom II X4 955 @ 3.2GHz
Radeon 6870 2GB
4GB ram

How the game looks with those settings:

Now it's just the beginning and I havent actually measured the fps, but it does look like a steady 30 at first glance. I was worried I wouldnt even be able to play the damn thing lol. Still looks really REALLY good with the settings posted.

Graphics are pretty nice on max!

You know what? I have a greater appreciation on 30fps. 30fps was absolute garbage on the PS3/360 games. But playing them on max settings, it ain't too bad.

Of course I prefer 60fps without bugs, but so far this game is looking great and playing well.

Cant wait till they patch this!

Wait until the next two chapters before being happy, as they'll take place in more open areas with more effects and enemies.

Yeah i'm cautiously happy about it. At least all I think I need to improve is my video card, since somehow it skipped my mind that its like 4 years old now. Got my eye on the New PC thread just in case. I wont need to go top of the line, but at least something that hit within the last year or so from Nvidia.

It's probably best to go with the 970 if you think about upgrading.

I can't notice any difference with the film grain adjustment.

Anyone notice the difference?

I see a difference, you're probably noticing some else though as it's not the only filter the game has.

i found out how to edit the texture resolution for those who have only 1gb or lower video card.

run with +vt_pageimagesizevmtr 4096 commandline, the default was 8192 (8k textures). it didnt make any difference at all for me quality wise, and i think it made it run a little bit less stuttery.

it does start to make a difference if u go as low as 2048, or even 1024

Can someone summarize for me? Game sounds like a shit PC optimization hack job. I don't like supporting these half ass ports with my money. Will it run well with a GTX780?

I was playing with everything maxed at 1080p and at a stable 30fps with a 280X. But there are reports of people with a 780Ti not managing to play it at max.

What's going on?

Also when I unlock my FPS I get around 50-55 in the forest part in Chapter 2. Is that the normal?

Have we found console commands to improve performance and the Fov? I don't think I mind the black bars.

It's shit on all platforms, not just PC. The majority of the discussion is surrounding the black bars, field of view and performance outside the default 30 FPS cap.

I have a 780Ti and am playing at 3200x1800 with SMAA without ever dropping below 30 FPS. Steady 60 FPS isn't possible for me even at 1080P, if you keep the framerate locked though it can be downsampled very easily and looks good.

If nothing else it isn't a half assed PC port. Unique interface, completely customizable controls(with dual input option), prompts change depending on your setting, in-game console, etc.

I think it has to do with the fact a lot of 30 FPS console games means "capped at 30, dips into 20s." Which is pretty much what Evil Within and Alien are on console. I don't think 30 is too bad overall, it just seems like very few games actually keep it locked.

Personally I think the PC version is fine, runs alright and looks great.
All I want is the FOV to be completely adjustable, it's the one and only thing bugging me about this game.

So no one can maintain 60 stable FPS but as soon everyone stays at 30 FPS everything is ok?

What a technical mess.

I thought the fix would be making it available outside a console command.

Performance fix I guess. They built the game without any real thought for performance and just capped it at 30 FPS.
It seems like a mess of a game to be honest. The whole field of view black bar thing was comical when they tried justifying it with their cinematic excuse.

Yes, but it does mention going through the console command has quirks.

And it really does have quirks, lots of them. I crashed a few times, lots of studdering and choppiness, and higher temps.

I don't think this game is demanding enough to have those kinds of problems.

What baffles me more is that iDTech 5 is built to give a stable 60 FPS naturally.
The fact that the game is capped at 60FPS feels like they are bending the engine in unnatural ways to do it

About the FOV and Black Bars, I do think they did it for artistic reasons, unless it was something that was changed recently.

Just skimming through the thread am I right in that the game is playable in 60fps and not super demanding like first thought? Might pick it up if that's the case.

For stable 60 fps you need minimum gtx 780ti, i don't know if that demanding for you or not.

It varies. I don't think anyone can achieve smooth 60fps at this point. I can't even reach 60fps with 2x GTX 970 and a i7 4790K. I'm playing at locked 48fps, works fine, but I'm still tweaking and waiting for a potential fix.

Been trying to pick through the different experiences people are having here and I need to check. I have an i7 860 and a GTX660, I don't care about max settings, I'm happy with 30fps and want to have a 1080p resolution. Am I right in thinking I'll be fine if I get this?

Oh okey, I only have a 680GTX so I would probably be screwed. Will hold on for potential fixes then or until I get a better card. Thanks!

I don't have personal experience with that particular card, but here's a benchmark to give you an idea:

Though that's with a slightly better CPU. Expect some dips into the 20s.

That's also with Very High settings. You can do better than that by turning some stuff down.

Quite sure I've seen others on here saying they were able to do 30fps just fine with a GTX660.

I've noticed that too, but they had a better CPU then me also. That also concerns me, my CPU seems to get left off benchmark charts a lot.

Like what? My framerate doesn't change no mattter what I turn off, except maybe Ambient Occlusion.

Not to mention there are like 3 adjustable settings.

I wouldn't say that. After inital issues and after disabling the reflections I've been able to play @ 1080p with everything maxed at 60fps. Yes occasionally it does dip to 50fps depending on the environment but for the most part its clear sailing. And that's with a GTX 780.

Flawless widescreen fix is out

Where is my precious?

I've seen someone stream this game and I noticed you could only invert one axis (I think it was Y). Can you fix that? As in can you invert both of them? Inverting only one axis is really pointless and stupid and would make this game unplayable for me if I decided to get it and play it with a DS3.

If you're on an Nvidia card Reflections should be the first thing. To be fair there are next to no settings anyway and shouldn't take more than 5-10 mins to see what their performance cost is each and work it out from there.

Same place as they always crop up, WSGF or on Flawless Widescreen's site

I suppose what I'm really asking for, is my performance going to be comparable to a PS4. As the fact is probably I'm getting one of those before any future PC upgrade so if I'm going to be struggling I might as well wait and get it on that.
