Ubisoft says that MS & Sony are 'pressuring them' into 30FPS on PC; Phil: Not true

Wait, this report is actually real due to the photo evidence?
Eh...I guess joking around about MS moneyhatting for parity could potentially turn out to be true, geez...Great PR weeks.

I don't think the photo is conclusive. A school website showing the ubisoft conference would be more assuring, but I don't see the school name or even the presenter's names being tossed around.

Well, I didn't want to post in this thread since it's a baseless story with no credibility.
I also find a bit ridiculous that when the alleged developer said "Console manufacturers are pushing for..." everyone automatically assumed it was just MS (because Sony is made out of saints apparently)... *BUT* since you're asking:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend_and_extinguish
Embrace, Extend, & Extinguish was created by J Allard, father of the XBox, which followed exactly the same strategy
albeit a little too quickly
:

XB1: Hai, guys! Can we play??
XB2: Aren't conference calls amazing??
XB3: ALL YOUR GAME ARE BELONG TO US

They always have a "lead" studio, which handles most of the game. The other studios do small parts of the game, and are not responsible for optimization of the main game.

That doesn't preclude the fact that the main game design could be done in Montreal but networking and engine optimisation work could be done in France.

It doesn't preclude it, no, but the engine and optimization work were actually done in Montreal. The networking typically is done somewhere else, though, and art is often in-sourced.

I know a few people who worked on it.

This wouldn't surprise me in the least if true. Just another entry on the "list of scummy things MS pulled or tried to". And that's one long-ass list.
Still, one photo isn't the kind of evidence I would take at face value. But it would be nice if someone tried to substantiate this.

Holy shit at the console guys putting pressure on devs to sabotage the PC versions. That is an act of war as far as I'm concerned.

I don't know what MS (or Sony) would have to win from gimping the PC version. It's not a direct competitor to the Xbox.

It's most likely BS. But if Unity ends up 30fps locked on PC I'd have a hard time believing MS or Sony are involved, that would be a dumb decision by Ubisoft.

Assuming it's true of course.
I wouldn't put it past them, considering how this console generation almost went thanks to MS.

Just a lurker here, but I just happen to be a student at this school and I attended this conference yesterday. Quite surprised to see a thread about it on GAF !
School's name is Grenoble INP Ensimag, one of, if not the, best schools in applied maths and computer science in France (wiki).
Every tuesday, students can attend 2 or 3 conferences organized by various companies. Here is the list from last year (here), dunno why it hasn't been updated yet, but you can see Ubisoft also came here last December, should be a solid proof (btw these are not the same presenters, and I'm not going to reveal their names publicly).

Anyway, I can confirm everything said on Reddit was said during the conference, it was interesting to learn more on game development, and I was most surprised to learn that Ubisoft has to wait for Sony & Microsoft review and how they can change things before they release the game.

Edit : btw, i'm not the one who took the pic.

This is very interesting news. Can a mod please verify Footmax?

Edit: Excellent. Thank you for sharing this information, Footmax.

The reason for most of those 30fps pc port is most of the time very simple - sometimes the animations for the various weapons/objects/world were keyed at 30fps for the original console version, and sometimes, engines have weird shit timed at 30fps.

Thats why some of those 'fps framerate' unlockers on pc games have super bizarre side effects with physics and effects; the calculations were based on a basis that the game world would run at 30fps.

You can see a similar effects with people unlocking the framerate in older 3d emulated games.

So when the devs port the game to PC and they somehow decide to go for 30 fps, it's usually because it would be 'expensive' to redo all the timings, or that the engine simply doesnt scale well and that the bosses decided it wouldn't bring a good return on investment and that 30fps is 'good enough' for a functional shipped title.

theres no conspiracy.

PS: Thanks Footmax for speaking up by the way, good info and it clears things up somewhat, for better or worse i'm not sure,

These two sentences do not seem to make sense together, especially when the reason Microsoft changed its initial policies can be directly attributed to Sony's decision not to adopt new DRM policies.

Sony changed only after the huge backlash. And the fact that they still, seemingly, are hell bent on completely controlling every aspect of this industry is worrysome at best and disgusting at worst.

Ryse is published by Crytek and they own the rights to the game. Also its a graphical oriented company, they would never lock fps on PC.

---

Its not only Microsoft, but Sony too going by the quote.
Paid for by MS money..besides who publishes AC or FarCry or WD then?

here was me thinking it was Ubisoft! Unfounded FUD that some will believe if so inclined, even worse than MS paid for Parity

EDIT: Well damn so a Dev in a school came out and said all this....I find that really amazing and shocking. Yes console makers have a say on Quality that is normal but to tell them to lock down a PC version makes no sense and what sway can they have.

I see no such "locks" coming from EA or Warner etc why only ubisoft being forced into this..still makes no sense!

If all this is true, I am truly appalled. Money hatting for exclusive content to make one platform's version to have more content is bad enough. Money hatting to flat out hinder the experiences of people on another platform is just a new level of scum baggers.

wow, shit just got real.

thanks Footmax for the input.

its like 20-Feb and E3 of 2013 all over again with this kind of crazy news here and there

Yeah, it's just one fuck up after the other.
Ubisoft is on a killer combo now, although in this case, it's not much their fault, as it's more of an insight on a larger problem.

PC has no big company to lobby for them.
Considering how "weak" the new consoles are compared to PCs this shouldn't be a suprise.

I really can't believe the FPS lock on PC for an AC game is gonna be a thing. The backslash would be far too much considering all AC games to my knowledge have not been capped to 30 so far, and it would pretty much be in plain sight that there's some shady going-ons behind the scenes for it to happen. Not to mention the Nvidia collaboration still seems to be in place.

Part of me wants to see the excuses they'd come up with tho.

And the plot thickens...

We'll hear a response from Ubi when this gets bigger.

Parity is obviously beneficial to the weakest platform holder. I have no doubt this is "encouraged". The question is how strongly it's encouraged and how many publishers actually bow to the pressure.

So now we're supposed to believe Microsoft is forcing PC framerates to be locked at 30? lol

This is dumber than the forced 900p parity stuff.
Ohh no Microsoft is the root of all evil in the tech world, you just have to listen and believe! I mean its been established already as truth, you know, with all this Microsoft exclusives that were ported to PC, all are 30fps locked!

Assuming this is true, which it seems to be right now according to first hand reports, I find this more funny and pathetic than enraging. Do your worst, console makers. Nothing stops the PC train.

Thank God people have learned to mod stuff like this out, but yeah if this doesn't rubber stamp games being designed to the potential of consoles and nothing more, I'm not sure what does.

And if Ubisoft is getting this pressure, you know everyone else is too...

Honestly I think he said 'console manufacturers' to seem more even handed but I don't see why Sony have much interest in demanding parity with other platforms. They're not the ones who bet the house on gamers being more interested in a fancy webcam than decent hardware.

"Someone asked the Ubisoft employees "what the hell happened with Watch Dogs", to which the Ubisoft employee, who was the 'Online Programmer' said that just before they release a game, they have to send a copy to console manufacturers, who tell them what to keep in the game, and what to take out."

This just might be the most laughable piece of dribble I've ever read on GAF.

That quote actually choked me for a few seconds, i'm still laughing now.

Anyone that believes any of this are simply fanboys wanting to hate because of console warz.
