LTTP Phil Spencer is a cool guy after listening to his Podcast Unlocked interview

Can someone with photoshop skills put Phil's face and name onto this picture or a similar one?

I like Phil and the moves he's made to right the X1 ship. The X1 is doing mostly well with game content so far, which is what Phil's job is/was before getting promoted. I like how he trolls us with potential games, ala Gears Collection recently because those could become real if they generate enough hype/momentum. I also reserve my right to criticize him if/when it suits me.

I think Phil being in charge of Xbox will be the best thing to ever happen for the brand. So far, he's just been fixing mistakes that shouldn't have been made, but his comments about wanting to rival Nintendo are what convince me he's legit.

If I have an Xbox 1 and I can play Tomb raider why should I care about people who don't have an X1 and can't play Tomb Raider?

... Seriously?

Okay, let's review. If you have an XB1, and can play Tomb Raider, which you already would have been able to... You've gained nothing. You've lost nothing. This does nothing for you. Yay, breaking dead even!

Now, despite the inherent arrogance of that perspective, that's still fine, because that's your consumer perspective. However, the group of people that would have played it on other platforms, i.e. PS4/PC/NGAUGE, is much, much larger than the base of XB1 owners. They aren't locked out of buying the game, they just have to wait however long for that period to end, because MS cut a check for it.

You didn't win, just a lot of people 'lose'. So congrats on your nothing.

The PS4 owners who want to play TR will just buy an Xbox to do so.

What's exciting about 2015 and beyond, is that we are going to see what Phil has planned for the future of Xbox. The games that have come out so far, would have been greenlit by Matterick, but from now, its all Phils decisions about what gets made etc.

Why would they bother? They know they'll get them game, just with a different release date. The idea that they'd spend several hundred dollars to get the game a bit faster than otherwise is silly at best, and stupid to be honest.

Will a few? Sure. Will it be a significant percentage? Haha, no.

Because the majority don't know that the game is coming to the PS4? Tomb Raider has a new fanbase now, and it's those that will buy the Xbox for the sequel.

But you're just factually incorrect. People *do* know it is coming to the PS4 and other platforms, just not right away. They've clarified it to death. Timed timed timed timed. You assume because of your bias, I am *informing* you based on retail trends and perception.

Posters assume that people won't buy Xbox for TR lol, yet I assume they will. Yet I'm the one who gets called out on his assumption.

That's not what you said. You said PS4 owners will buy an Xbox to play Tomb Raider. As in people who have already forked out $400 for a console will fork out another $450 just to play Tomb Raider 3-4-5-6 months earlier.

If the shoe was on the other foot I can almost guarantee your assumption would be that people wouldn't buy a PS4 to play Tomb Raider if they already owned an XBOne.

Didn't Sony pay Red Thread Games to keep Dreamfall Chapters a console exclusive for the PS4? It was potentially coming to all systems prior. There could be more to it, but I was a disappointed to hear it. I really enjoyed the original The Longest Journey. http://n4g.com/news/1566916/dreamfall-chapters-no-longer-coming-to-wii-u-or-xbox-one

I made a post about this on n4g before but here it is again -

The Wii U version was never confirmed it was always a possibility like the XB1 and PS4 and mobile versions. The only platforms confirmed were ones on the Kickstarter campaign -
Hello, peoples!

We've talked quite a bit about bringing Chapters to consoles already (for example this) but of course this won't negatively affect the PC/Mac/Linux versions, since we're using Unity. Most of the work we do is on the content side, not the engine side (this game is all about story and art and interesting gameplay challenges, not about fancy new features & bullet points) and the content will remain the same across all platforms. Also, the PS4 and the Xbox One are basically PCs -- and they both support Unity. As does the Wii U.

We actually haven't confirmed that we're definitely, absolutely going to be on ANY console. Yes, we're "exploring" the Wii U, and if we can make the game look great and play well on Nintendo's platform without compromising anything, we'll definitely consider porting & self-publishing the game via the eShop. We'll reach more players and a larger audience, and that's A Good Thing. But we'll see how it plays out and how well the game works, and then we'll take it from there.

The same goes for other, next-generation consoles, without committing to anything or announcing anything right now. Our development focus right now is on PC/Mac (and, by extension, Linux) but since Unity does the hard work and makes porting extremely easy, and since all the content is shared, it's really a no-brainer for us to also take the game to other platforms. Yes, even mobile, although we have said we'll wait with that until the game is out.

Someone mentioned controls, and we're already supporting both mouse/keyboard and joypads for the desktop versions, so consoles won't affect this at all. I love playing with a joypad (the Xbox one for Windows, obviously) and Martin is a die-hard keyboard-and-mouse guy, so we're going to make damn sure the game plays well with both setups. The original Dreamfall worked well with the joypad, not so well with mouse/keyboard, but we've completely changed the latter for Chapters and it's already a huge improvement. And we'll keep testing and tweaking until November 2014.

I hope that cleared up some things! Don't hesitate to poke us and ask us questions about this, we're more than happy to answer whatever we can answer.

Ragnar

Reason Wii U version was cancelled - http://i3.minus.com/jbtoXPyg1rECFV.JPG

Also there are no signs Sony paid for it because the game is getting self published on PSN and the devs say they are using their own money to fund the console version not Kickstarter money.

TLDR -

Wii U version cancelled because of low resources and focus needed on one console and underpowered compared to PS4/XB1.
PS4 timed exclusive(As of now) because for them they are making one console port at a time. PS4 was chosen, game is not getting funded via kickstarter money, being self-published on PSN.

Its to bolster the lineup. TR was a fine game, sometimes great, when the trailer for next gen TR hits people will be licking their lips along with the collection of games that will come out in 2015, it does make the X1 looks stronger regardless of it being timed. And no, it's not that it was already coming to X1 its about the dev team fully focused on x1 (360 is an afterthought most likely) to bring the best experience they can. While I don't encourage it, I don't see anything wrong with it, its been a part of this industry for years. And to be honest MS have deep pockets so I don't believe we're losing out on a piece of their gaming budget, they just bought a 2billion dollar company, if the business opportunity is right they'll invest.

If the game is coming out on PS4 a few months later, this talk of the game now being developed with the X1's strengths in mind is complete nonsense either way.

Dev team fully focused on X1? What, do you think they'll only start making the PS4 version once the X1 version is on shelves? No, they'll be developed simultaneously, they announced the game to be multiplatform from the very start. I see no reason why they'd even alter the development roadmap for either version. Nothing aside from the PS4 version having a few extra months in the pipeline.

Phil being a nice guy just like Albert Penello does not eradicate Microsofts lies in my book and does not make Microsoft suddenly an honorable company while making Don Mattrick the scape-goat.

They are still trying to obfuscate and confuse the consumer with the word "Exclusive to X1" when Sony whilst of course not perfect uses words like "First to Playstation" when talking about timed-exclusives. Buying games and not making them to their rivals same output will likely always be the same with them too.

Microsoft Parity clause with Indys and their still harping on about the power of the cloud. Confuse the customer + get the cash. I have never been a fanboy, always owned both consoles when available until this Gen, they opened my eyes, perhaps I am not as naive as I used to be when I was younger, probably a factor.

By all means if what games MS make appeal go for it though if it offers "Value" Fun+Performance = worth the $$££?

No I won't, why would I want to pay out for a XboxOne for one game? It would also mean paying out for online again. I am still interested in TR and will buy it when it eventually comes out on the PS4, but I can't justify spending arround £400 for a £40 game.

The roadmap has been altered though as have (most likely) resources to a) satisfy MS under whatever deal was made b) review and focus headcount on most immenent release c) continue with others but not at the expense of X1 version and d) risk lowered due to deal removing certain amount of pressure from the studio

Titanfall deal is an example how wrong a lot of people here were, of course until we know the facts we will never know. Ultimately its Phil job to build on Xbox, and this move is acceptable for Xbox owners and future owners.

Yeah he's cool, but what he recently said about the indie parity clause was kind of bullshit... Other than that, he seems like the right guy for Xbox.

"dev team fully focused on x1" LMAO! It's like developing PS4 and PC version is going to handicap X1 development.
The game would had always xbone as lead platform, CD don't do PC or PS versions, they always outsource ports to other devs.

Wishful thinking.

So you won't accept the simple and most logical conclusion, but instead rely on your own narrative that Microsoft now demands a higher quality title with a bigger personnel investment.

That's not how it works. As far as we know, Microsoft bought exclusive time. That's it.
A few months is not going to substantially shift PS4 team staff over to X1 development all of a sudden. It wouldn't make sense. Especially not when both teams set out to reach their targets before holiday 2015 and their current development roadmap would suffice perfectly.

I honestly don't think Microsoft cares that much about potentially making the X1 version a smidge more polished when there won't be anything to compare it to for months.
They made the investment to be able to prop up a semi-exclusive AAA title during the holidays. That's what they paid money for and it's probably a business-savvy move, albeit a very anti-consumer one.

Let me try to spin this MS PR style.

The game original release target was Q2 2016 all platform, MS send "resource" and tech support to help finish Xbox one version 6 month earlier.
Everyone still get to play the game at the original date, Xbox user get the benefit of playing it early thanks to MS help.

People are actually pretty smart at figuring other people out. Other than a few master manipulators people who come off as down to earth and reasonable generally are. Most of us have lived long enough to call BS when they see it. I'm not saying people don't have legitimate concerns about MS or their original policies, but think most people who think Phil is just an "act" are basing it on pre-conceived notions based on their hatred of the brand.

Honestly there is no reason you should. PS1 owners didn't give a shit when Sony did basically the same shit with TR 2. Now people want to act like it's the worst shit ever when MS does it. Please...

TR2 released on PC the same day it released on PS1. TR3 was on the PC. TR TLR was on PC and Dreamcast. Every game has been on multiple platforms. Considering TR1 appeared on the Saturn, is it a big surprise the two follow ups did not?

This is some outright revisionist nonsense to try to compare the two situations.

I doubt there are many who would buy a console for only one game. I say I bought PS4 purely for Naughty Dog's games, but I'm also interested in other games Sony publish; SingStar, The Order, Ratchet & Clank, etc.

Having Tomb Raider might not be enough to persuade consumer to buy an Xbox next year, but having other exclusives plus Tomb Raider might be just enough.

And what about us PC gamers?

Well you've got this ;)

Never been a TR fan but if folks really are upset about this and rightfully so, well, the only thing to do is make UC4 last 6 months until the PS4 version of TR. Shouldn' be that hard.
