I guess we don't know yet, but what is to stop me borrowing an amiibo and unlocking the costume in Mario Kart and then giving the amiibo back?

Do I have to unlock the costume/tap the amiibo on the gamepad every time I want to use it?

No, once you scan the amiibo, the item in question stays unlocked. The only thing is, for games that write data onto the amiibo (like say, SSB), you can only store one game at a time & if you want to use it on a new game to write data onto said amiibo, you have to erase the data in order to make room for the new data.

Thankfully, this doesn't apply to games that simply just read the amiibo, like Hyrule Warriors & Mario Kart 8.

...unless you get a Kirby like this!

I guess cos it's so small it's not as easy to keep as upright as the others.

I just realized something that might have already been obvious to others. So far we have only seen Amiibo costumes for ten characters.
But there is a second batch of DLC coming in 2015 and more Amiibos will have been released by that time; maybe we'll get more costumes! Maybe they will eventually release costumes for all Amiibos?!

I'm still holding out hope for a Wii Fit Trainer costume.

So I've seen space cleared out for Amiibos in the Nintendo sections of multiple Targets and now Best Buy (just went to preorder Smash bundle).

Target:

Best Buy:

Sorry for quality hard to get a complete shot with the space between aisles.

In both Target and Best Buy the Wii U aisle faces the Skylanders/Infinity aisle so it's located well. I'm sure others have seen space cleared out too. Haven't been to Gamestop or Walmart in a while though (especially Walmart).

I wonder how much Nintendo had to pay for that space. And I'm going to assume Rosalina will be exclusive to Target, and Metaknight to Best Buy (Maybe Vise Versa), since Nintendo likely had to offer an exclusive figure to each store to secure the deal.

I remember talking to the employee at GameStop & he said they had no idea where they were gonna put them (I joked they could hang a shelf from the ceiling) since they had dedicated stands/shelves for Skylanders & Disney Infinity and the one in town is a bit small compared to others.

Only exclusive at the moment is Shulk at GameStop...which makes the 2nd Xenoblade-related item exclusive at GS.

I assume nothing they've just moved space in the regular Wii U aisles. I mean in Target the Wii U shares and entire aisle with Wii U so there is plenty of empty places where games used to be. They easily have space to have tte Amiibos take up the entire left side section and just move the Wii I games directly to the right.

As for Best Buy they just completely took out the Wii section and replaced it with Amiibo. I don't remember seeing any Wii games at Best Buy.

It's basically just taking Wii space and considering how long the Wii U has been out it works out well.

Lucario, Meta Knight, and Rosalina are all not available for preorder on Amazon, so its rumored they may be store exclusives. I would likely peg Lucario as a Toys R' Us Exclusive, Meta Knight for Best Buy, and Rosalina for Target.

Or maybe Amazon just screwed up putting them on their store.

Plan on getting Marth(...depending on how bad he looks when I get to see him in-store), Meta Knight, and Ike, of the announced figures.

I went to my local gamestop a couple days ago, didn't see any shelf space for amiibo, but it is a very small store, maybe they're waiting 'till last minute, I'm not sure.

yes, those will be retail exclusive too, imho, in the US
I don't think Nintendo paid so much for the space on shelves: we are talking about a toy (physiacl object) based on popular franchises (Nintendo ones) already known among hardcore fans (usually attracted by "special editions, limited editions, collectibles) and kids (usually "hot target" during holiday season.
considering how popular the "toy aspect" (not talking only about Skylander, but think about all the LE/Preorder bonuses) has become popular at retailers for the videogame business (to partially compensate the spread of the digital distribution), I see amiibos as a very interesting item for retailers, indipendently from the Wii U struggles (that in any case are not so hard as in middle 2013, thanks to MK8 bundle and the incoming release of Smash), especially knowing how Holidays are a driver for "family items" as Nintendo consoles could be seen.

Are there any good Canadian deals for the amiibo's, such as at Best Buy? I want to get my favourite characters, but I also don't want to break the bank.

Zonic

Yeah, that's not really a good deal considering Best Buy GCU members can get them for about $10.40 each & Toys R Us is doing 3 for $30 next week, meaning both places allow you to get 10 for about $100 + tax.

Also no Link?! He's the one that works with the most games at the moment!

I assume the images shown are examples and the assortment is random.

Yeah, those are the ones you get. It's not random otherwise you might get dupes, and that would be pretty bad.

Yeah, or if you're a Best Buy GCU member, you get 20% off on them, making them about $10.40 each. Those are basically the best deals at the moment.

I hope Nintendo makes an NES open Mario, they did ask in a survey if people would be interested in alternative colors.

Just a thought...

The only game we know that is coming to the New 3DS exclusively is Xenoblade Chronicles
xenoblade-chronicles-new-3ds.jpg

One big push for the New 3DS was NFC for Amiibo communication
amiibo.jpg

What if...

The big push for releasing Xenoblade Chronicles on the New 3DS is so there would be a critically acclaimed RPG that many people have yet to play AND you can now add select Amiibos as party members in this version of Xenoblade Chronicles, justifying the need to be on New 3DS?

Just a thought

I think that it is overwhelmingly reasonable to expect this.

While this is an early call, IMO it is looking like Amiibo is going to be quite successful for Nintendo. I'm fully assuming that Amiibos are going to be tied to every major Nintendo launch in 2015 and onward. The benefits of additional review and cross promotion make it an option that I doubt Nintendo will be able to resist.

Btw, I still want that original Mario Amiibo. I wish they had offered it as a special promotion at some point. I would have braved ebay to get one if necessary.

Well I just had a weird 5 minutes. My mom called me to say that she canceled my amiibo preorder on her Prime account so she could do the 3 for $30 deal at Toys 'R Us and get two for my brothers. I pointed out that I specifically got Link on Amazon so I could get it release day and that she could just buy a different one, but she wouldn't budge. Eventually after much poking and prodding she finally admitted that she actually bought every amiibo in Wave 1 + 2 and was planning on them being a Christmas gift.

On one hand, my mom is really into surprises, so I kind of feel bad for accidentally spoiling it. But on the other hand, I'm getting every amiibo! Woo!

oh god now i'm going to have to collect them all

never bother with parents around Christmas!!!

Btw, disappointed that Zelda amiibo is just adding generic 3+stars weapons in HW, if tapped in daily. I was hoping for another new weapon, as for Link.
Still buying Link, now I'm doubtful about Zelda.

I just got an email from Amazon with the subject line "Nintendo Amiibo: Last Chance to Pre-order on Amazon.com". It's interesting to see a direct email from Amazon like this, especially since they have historically had a pretty icy relationship with Nintendo.

Amiibos seem to be doing fairly well on the Amazon sales charts:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/videogames/471304/ref=pd_zg_hrsr_vg_2_2_last

It will be interesting to see what sorts of numbers Nintendo will have done with these come January.

The official website for amiibo is up.

One of the features they list is: "Add a character to the game." Might hint at a future Skylanders/Infinity style game. Or maybe it's just their way of describing the Smash feature.

Also, one interesting thing I noticed was the new Fox art in the header. It used to be the Assault design:

It's based off his Smash design, but the art is totally new and slightly different. The headset on the right side of his face is a different color. I wonder if this is going to be the standard Fox design from now on.

Hmm, Hyrule Warriors has this about the amiibos that aren't Link:

"Tap the Zelda™ amiibo figure once per day to get a weapon rated 3 stars or higher."
"Tap any other amiibo figure once per day to get a weapon rated 3 starts or lower, Rupee bonus or crafting material bonus"

The fact they can be used more than once is nice. Though sucks Zelda didn't give you a new weapon like Link.

"Currently compatible with the following amiibo figures: Mario™, Luigi™, Peach™, Yoshi™, Donkey Kong™, Link™, Captain Falcon, Kirby™, Samus™, Fox"

Hope that means more outfits down the line.

I would laugh if there was racing suits that are based off of the Wii Fit Trainer & Little Mac, just in the sheer ridiculousness alone would brighten up my day. Though I think a Pit & Olimar/Pikmin costume would be pretty cute.

Haha, they actually put them out a couple of days ago, but they denied me the sale. They also denied me the sale again today. Oh well! My Amazon shipment will be here on Friday :D

Hey, I totally didn't realize that there was a dedicated Amiibo thread. Neat.

Just a note, I went to my Gamestop last night and they informed me that they were no longer taking preorders for the November 21st Amiibos. So if you put it off till the last second like I did, you'll have to go somewhere. It's a shame, because I have a bunch of credit there. Oh well, I have Link preordered there from previously, and I've got WFT preordered on Amazon for my wife. I want to still get Mario, Samus and/or Peach, though. The Gamestop rep did recommenced that I drop by on Friday to see what they have that hasn't already been purchased, so I'll check there when I pick up my Link.

EDIT: I also saw this cool video on Amiibos in Smash, which I thought I would post in case someone else hasn't seen it. It offers some thoughts on training the Amiibos, and using them to grind items. It does unfortunately point out that Amiibos can't be used for special co-op.

Whelp.

I intentionally didn't preorder any Amiibos as I want to be able to select the best paint jobs myself in-store.

I hope this plan doesn't backfire on me. I think I might make an Amiibo run during lunch on Friday.

wait UOT!?
I was very annoyed to find this out a few days ago. I had hoped to use Amiibos in the co-op modes, specifically event mode.

Oh well.

It kind of makes sense to me, since a lot of those modes involve special instructions. (Attack this guy, protect that guy, etc.) but I agree that it's a huge disappointment.

If you're looking for Amiibos in good packaging you might have to go early so that you have the time and supply to be able to do that. This morning when I was looking through the ones they had already out at Walmart, I noticed lots of packaging damage. Lots of them were warped, had slight tears in then and where the plastic meets the cardboard was kind of fucked up on a few of them (like not completely sealed or small wrinkles and airbubbles in the plastic).

Overall, the paint jobs seemed fairly uniform on the Amiibos themselves though, so that's a good sign if you just want good looking figures!

Nice! All toys face varying degrees of paint inconsistencies (especially detailed ones like some of these), so I'm still going to scrutinize the ones I buy. At least the early ones.

Yeah, I'm not planning to keep any in-package so I'm not really that concerned about the prospect of shabby boxes. It's funny, I could imagine caring more about that with most other products, but my concern over the paint issue totally outweighs any potential pet peeves over packaging. I'm just going to throw it out, so why get hung up on it.

Haha! Fair enough! I'm the complete opposite. I don't really care what the figure looks like so long as the packaging is as immaculate as possible. We'd probably make a good wingman for each other, haha.

Not being able to us amiibo in Classic co-op is a huge letdown for me. That was the main things I was going to use them for!

So how long until we learn of an Amazon exclusive amiibo?

& that link underneath the Lucario/Toys 'R' Us news is about Meta Knight/Best Buy. Where are you hearing about the 3rd retailer exclusive?

Edit: Hmm, so Lucario, Meta Knight, & Rosalina aren't listed on Amazon or GameStop. I guess that hints at the fact they're the retail exclusives.
