An extensive look at the first year of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One - Your opinion?

I thought it would be interesting to take a detailed look at the first year of the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, partially because I was bored and wanted to know the exact number of retail, downloadable, remaster, sequel releases etc. I think the result is quite interesting for the first year, in part because the amount of remasters and ports is quite obvious. I don't really mind for games like The Last of Us and GTA V though because I hadn't played them yet. I also think it's interesting to see how many games at this point are next gen only and how good the new IPs are doing. I made an entire list and I spend a few hours making this so now I can share it with everyone.

Final stats

The first year of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One had about 146 game releases, probably excluding a few lesser known titles here and there. About 76 of those releases were “AAA” retail, while 70 games were downloadable titles. From the 76 retail titles, you have 13 remasters & ports, 45 sequels and 16 new Ips. The 70 downloadable titles include 36 ports, 10 sequels and 24 new IPs. In the retail AAA category, both Sony and Microsoft have similar output, with a vast majority being third party. In the indie/downloadable scene however, the difference between PS4 and Xbox One is quite noticeable. While about 37 games are exclusive to the PS4 (and other PlayStation-systems), only 9 titles are exclusive to the Xbox One.

Summary

  • The three best scoring games are remastered titles.
  • Of the 36 third-party sequels, only three games are next gen only.
  • Assassin's Creed: Unity is the only non-sports third-party sequel that is exclusive to PS4, Xbox One and PC.
  • The best scoring sequels are Dragon Age: Inquisition, FIFA14 and Forza Horizon 2.
  • Sunset Overdrive is the the only new "AAA" IP that is exclusive to one platform and has a metacritic higher than 80.
  • The PlayStation 4 only has two new IPs of "AAA" quality and both of them received mixed critical reception.
  • The majority of the new AAA IPs are still cross-gen.
  • The best scoring new IP is Titanfall followed by Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Sunset Overdrive.
  • While the PlayStation 4 has about 37 exclusive downloadable titles, 23 of them are ports and remasters.
  • The Xbox One only has 2 downloadable ports: Halo: Spartan Assault and Pinball FX2.
  • The best scoring new IP of the PlayStation 4 is Resogun. It is also the best scoring new IP of all the downloadable titles.
  • Most of the new indie IPs were met by negative or mixed reviews. The better scoring titles are multi-platform like Child of Light or they include a pc-release like Transistor.
  • Of all the games released during the first year of "next-gen", we have 33% remasters & ports, 38% sequels & remakes and 29% new IPs.

So, what do you think of this first year, GAF? Are you satisfied? Are you looking forward to 2015? Did you find 2014 disappointing?

not disappointed because the first year is always like this

I guess it could be better on both sides but i have enough to play until february. Would give 2014 a 8/10.

Own both the PS4 and Xbox One, not disappointed in either, first year I was expecting it to be like this. Had a better time with my PS4 because I enjoy the exclusives it had and the generally better 3rd party performance over the Xbox One

2014: the year that almost everything I was interested in either shipped with tons of problems or was delayed to 2015.

Disappointed overall. Hoping that 2015 will make up for it. Shadow of Mordor was awesome at least.

It's sad that all the best scoring games are remasters...

I haven't really used either the Xbone or PS4 that much this year. I'd perhaps give the Xbone the edge just because of how much I enjoyed Forza Horizon 2 though.

PC is the clear winner imo.

If you don't have PC, Diablo and Dragon Age are really great games worth owning a new console for imo. Lots of great indies and F2P too.

Love my PS4, I almost regretted it when I only had Destiny to play but now I have CoD:AW, GTA V and TLoU:R I love it. Throw in a handful of Plus games and it's keeping me pretty busy.

And yes, I know two of those are remasters but I never played GTA or TLoU and coming from a PC I appreciated the extra fidelity.

Also, I'm a sucker for Indies so the PS4 is an obvious choice there

It's incredible to see how well Xbox went through this first year, after all that mess in the beginning...

But I think It was a really weak start of a generation ... I still think that there ain't nothing NEW.

Just PS4 for me, I have never bought so many games in the first year of a system before. Sure there may not be a lot of AAA exclusives but the amount of really good games is incredible and I have a huge backlog and haven't touched my PS3 since I finished Left Behind.

Best first year for a platform that I have experienced.

Even when people say the exclusives were poor, I can't agree. I loved inFAMOUS Second Son and First Light, I love DriveClub ( it's been working for me recently ) and then you have gems like Resogun which is still my favourite game on PS4.

I'll quote myself from the other thread since it's a good summary

Xbox One:

Like
-Amazing Exclusives in the first year of life
-Kinect Integration and Voice Commands are something i can't get enough of
-Xbox Fitness
-Controller is perfection
-Reviving some of my old favourite IPs (Killer Instinct - Phantom Dust)
-Insanely quiet system
-Snap Feature
-Smartglass
-Controller battery life
-EA Access
-Media capability
-Meaty monthly updates
-Decent out of the box headset

Dislike
-Original pricing with Kinect was an awful choice, they should've gone with 450€ with Kinect 350€ without
-Installing times are slow, but i heard this is getting adressed so there's hope
-UI can be sloppy at times

PS4:

Like
-Great piece of tech
-Best multiplats
-DS4 is a HUGE improvement over the DS3
-Screencap feature
-Quick installs time

Dislike
-Awful first year for exclusives
-DS4 battery life
-PSN is still not on par with Live
-Media capability
-System is too loud
-Awful out of the box "headset"

Year ended strong - Forza 2, Sunset Overdrive and Halo MCC - really happy with those purchases.

Being on the preview programme really is great as well - loads of updates so far.

still need to finish D4, Horizon 2 etc after i finish with DA:I

Ill grab a PS4 once Bloodborne is out. Nothing on it that interests me right now.

Resogun and Wolfenstein were the good games, Ground Zeroes an P.T. damn impressive demos and by now my PS4 would be a paperweight if it wasn't for my abusive relationship with Destiny, which says a lot.

Thank god for PC and Nintendo.

Next gen? ...more like lame gen.

PS4:

Disappointed with the lack of high quality AAA exclusives.

Pleasantly surprised with the amount of indies and the PS+ games though.

I'm disappointed with this generation so far, it seems we're immediately in 'targeting 30fps' territory and trying to do too much shiny.

Maybe I'm getting old, but I think it's a shame.

I admit, that the first year is often hard/weird, but this time for me the only interesting titles are remakes and ports from the last generation.
The new IPs and games are all somehow inferior.

I really want to buy a PS4/XB1, but every time I review the available games I'm interested in I end up saying, "That's not worth my money yet"
I'll wait at least till spring (or a really good Christmas-Deal) when, weak as I am, I won't resist FF-Type0 (even if it is another Port) and the first real big next gen titles are getting closer.

I think the PS4 has had a belting year, and I don't give a shit that many of my favourite games this year were available in lesser forms last year. All I care about is that there has been a steady stream of great games that I wanted to play.

I don't have an XBone but I'm itching to buy one as it looks to me like that console has had a cracking year too. If I had a little more free time I'd have already picked one up by now and I'm sure I'd have been very happy with my purchase.

It's been a pretty trash year for these two machines on the whole it seems. Xbox One ended up being such a chugging disappointment on so many fronts I got rid of mine before I even had it a year. I've only had a PS4 a couple of months but it's mainly just a Destiny box (Though I am still working my way through the exclusive titles for it), but I can at least see a lot of titles for it to look forward to.

Judged at this point in time, it's been a jank ass, unfinished trash gen so far. At this point last gen, we'd already had the likes of Gears of War come out ffs.

This is a really good year-end summary.

2014 has been a pretty great year for me though, and I've never felt that I've been lacking in games. I was able to play TLOU for the first time, and I had a lot of fun with Infamous. Destiny is also a good game to play with friends that I've poured way too much time into. And now LBP3 caps off the year in a nice way. I haven't even tried games like Shadow of Mordor and Wolfenstein yet, which will probably happen at some point.

And I haven't even mentioned downloadable games yet. Velocity 2X, Transistor, and BoI:R are all utterly amazing.

Only reason I haven't and won't pick one up is due to time, my backlog for PS4 alone is ridiculous and my gaming time is now down to 5 hours a week ( not including my Vita time ).

I just can't justify a purchase of another system with so little time to play.

Bought a PS4 expecting to love the hell out of it and was disappointed.
Bought an Xbone expecting to be disappointed and love the hell out of it.

Next year will probably be different, though.

My opinion is that in terms of exclusives, this has been worse than WiiU's first year.
Didn't really care about the ports since most were also on old gen and PC

PC is the clear winner imo.

This. It got a ton of great exclusives, and most of the multiplatform games the ps4 and XBO got.

As a pc gamer who only buys consoles for their exclusives, both systems failed to get enough of those to justify a purchase for me, but I didn't really expected them to reach that point on their first year.
I did end up buying an XBO because its future looks bright, hopefully I wasn't wrong.

I had the same experience.

Overall though, despite my objections it is becoming clear that these consoles are quite a bit underpowered and although the technical differences seemed large between them at first, the reality is is that they're about the same and are both very limited compared to current/PC tech.

I'll still enjoy this generation but there's not much really new (other than maybe voice commands on both).

Had a PS4 from launch until sometime in May. XB1 from may until now.

I played a lot of Ghosts, as awful as it was. Resogun was solid, but I'm not a huge shmup fan. Killzone was wretched. After the initial burst of launch games, my PS4 started to collect dust until Infamous. Good game, but the control scheme really brought out how much I hate the triggers on the controller. That would only get worse when I started to look at my next most wanted game - Wolfenstein. Another game that pushed the triggers. Trials fusion had me pining for better triggers. The big diskinect was announced and I took some time to look at the lineup for both systems, at least what was announced for the time. I wasn't interested in much coming out for the PS4, aside from the superior multiplatform titles. So I made the jump. The terrible triggers combined with a weak lineup, and an air of reform at Xbox was enough for me to switch sides (for now anyhow (i switch sides a lot)).

The first game I bought for my new system was, once again, Trials Fusion. Immediately I was happy with the decision. The triggers were fantastic. The rumble triggers game changing. It is still one of my most played games today. Wolfenstein was fucking amazing. I knew that the XB1 version of the two games that I owned was worse than the PS4, but I no longer had to deal with DS4 triggers. That was a tradeoff I was happy to make. Since then I've loaded up on a bunch of games, and still have a ton of games to pick up.

My favorite, and most played, game of the year has to go to Diablo 3. Roughly 300 hours played, all single player. Any friends that I have must love the shit out of me, because I have given away oodles of gifts (and received none, you lazy fucks).

My year was a year of unexpected change. A year ago I expected to be playing Driveclub and The Order. Instead I ended up playing a lot of Diablo 3, Titanfall and Advanced Warfare. Both systems are solid. For the majority of users I would have no problem recommending a PS4. It's a great system with the best version of nearly every multiplayer. An XB1 recommendation comes with the caveat that you are giving up graphical fidelity in exchange for something you don't like about the PS4.

Nice summary. These are available at retail as well under remasters/ports:

Minecraft
The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead: Season Two
The Wolf Among Us

edit: I guess Season Two doesn't technically count as port/remaster since the retail release dropped same day on all systems.

Owning both I have to say overall I have to give my edge to PS4 as I is my general gaming machine. I don't need qualifiers like cross gen, indie, multiplat, exclusive remaster, etc games are games I played most of them on the PS4. I do enjoy some of the smaller Xbox One titles like D4 and KI, Sunset Overdrive is fun so far but I can see where it might fall into the trap of you're doing a lot of the same thing eventually. 2014 really was the Wii U's year (which I also own and plan on diving more into it's exclusives this Holiday) more than anything which is to be expected it's a platform that had more time on the market to hit it's stride the other two will get there as well so that's cool.

Not disappointed with the PS4 in any way. While most of the games are available elsewhere (PS3 or PC), I prefer playing them on PS4 anyway for the better graphics, better controller and even trophy earning and the party chat with my friends who all have a PS4.

I could complain about the excess of remasters but I understand the companies just can't take risks as before on such a small installed base of new consoles. Let's enjoy remasters and smaller games while the consoles' userbases grow enough for the more numerous AAA games to hit and sell better. Also, looks like they need more time to develop the games so the remasters and remakes make for a nice filler in between releases.

I'm throughly enjoying Sleeping Dogs and Diablo 3 on PS4. Also, haven't finished Resogun DLC trophies yet, Warframe keeps getting updates, Tomb Raider isn't done... Didn't even download some PS Plus games such as Towerfall, gotta buy Transistor, GTAV that I missed last gen, etc. And I'm not even adding the usual multiplats such as CoD and AC. All in all PS4 got more than enough content to keep my busy.

I won't speak for XB1, but by and large I'm happy with the PS4.

I would just like a more communicative and open Sony, with a unified / standard approach to issues along with rough plan.

Do I respect a need to not communicate sensitive issues or things they may not be ready to announce? Sure.

As a platform holder do I like them saying things like 'ahh Driveclub issues, refer to Evo's Facebook page'. 'PSN issues? Please understand' or feeling completely guilty for wanting clarification / a rough 'in the next three - six months' answer to relatively straight questions like 'When / Will the PS4 get MKV / Media playback like the XB1 has'? - No, I don't like it.

As a console though its pretty good. It'll be better in 2015 with everything that was delayed.

Enjoy my PS4 a lot, could have done with one more big exclusive this year but the lack of software greatly exaggerated.

My GOTY is probably Forza Horizon 2, but I think PS4 takes the cake for me this year. Between the few exclusive games I've loved, and the deluge of great PS+ stuff, I had the most fun on that system.

Going by Holiday releases alone though, XBO has it hands down.

Very satisfied with the Xbox now. Forza Horizon 2 and Sunset Overdrive have taken the games lineup from decent, to stellar for me. Project Spark and Xbox Fitness are great free tools if you put the effort in and the OS is pretty impressive now.

The only reason I buy consoles anymore are for the exclusives. So far, the Wii U is getting the most gameplay time for me this year, and that's including PC gaming.

But yes, they are definitely underpowered and it shows.

I've enjoyed myself. I've not played as much as I thought, but then I've had a lot going on and just not played much of anything.

I'm totally fine with the remasters too, but would like to see more games drop last gen support and just work on 8th gen.

Every gen the start is slow, but the remasters have added some extra games that people didn't play and have boosted that library a bit.

I didn't play Tomb Raider, TLOU or GTA5 on my PS3, but I have the first, I want the second and I might one day play GTA5 on the PS4.

Hell, watching the new Batman trailer and watching the new Gotham TV show has just made me wish for a PS4 remaster of AA and AC despite completing the story and all the Riddler stuff on my PS3. I could buy them on steam for like £3 and play on my 30" HD+ monitor, but I don't want to.

2015 is going to be great for us I think. MS is learning more every day what people want from their console so are fighting hard for your money and Sony will finally start to reap the rewards of the huge portfolio of studios they have that were busy supporting the PS3.

Looking forward to it!

If memory serves correctly, PS4/XB1 will be getting a 3pack with Asylum/City/Origins in it.

Disappointed overall. Hoping that 2015 will make up for it. Shadow of Mordor was awesome at least.

It will. The first half of 2015 is looking ridiculously stacked as it is, with a decent amount of true next-gen games that aren't cross-gen; The Witcher 3, The Order, FFXV Demo.

That's been the problem so far really. Not enough next-gen exclusives, too many cross-gen games. Indeed at least for me the PS4's first party next-gen only offering has been underwhelming so far, so I'm hoping the third party next-gen only offerings is where the fruit lies.

Nice OP!
In conclusion I would seem both have had great years.

PS4 has clearly had an advantage over xbox with the numerous Indy games supporting the platform, even if not all of them got great reviews.

Unfortunately, it's exclusive AAA output has not been as great thanks to some delays. X1 has had better AAA exclusives it's first year, however, the difference isn't anything to go shouting about from the rooftops.

I think the best thing about these consoles at this point is their bright future in regaurds to upcoming games like Witcher 3, Evolve, Batman Arkham Knight, Halo 5, Uncharted 4, FFXV, and MGS5 just to name a few.
I lookfoward to years of equally great support from both consoles! This next year will be one heck of a ride!!
....for my walet that is...

Yawn inducing frankly. Mediocre at best hardware. Very little in the way of new game ip's 'made up for' with a barrage of remasters. And very average and pedictable AAA multiplat sequels.

I feel it's the weakest gen of them all both now and looking forward.

Something i didnt expect from my Xbox One is for it to rule my living room. Did not expect Plex this early (game changer for me), absolutely did not expect TV (thought it was US only) in UK. Extremely pleased.

The OS is one of my favourite aspects of X1.
