Has he been charged with breaking copyright laws in New Zealand? I thought the legal proceedings against him was an extradition case initiated by the US to transport there and charge him there. The evidence against him will not be revealed in full until he arrives in the US.

I don't know if he has been charged. If he hasn't, he should be. But if the New Zealand is too lazy to do their part and enforce their copyright laws, then they should let the USA do it.

Make fun of him all you will, but the way Megaupload was taken down was incredibly shady. Its a shame that now that he is out of money he won't be able to prove it. He probably was doing illegal stuff but that doesn't make breaking all kinds of laws to arrest him legal either.

If his wife is just funnelling money from Mega while they're divorced on paper, why would he go to prison? It just seems like a stupid move if the end-game leads to you being thrown into prison.

I'm far from a lawyer, but maybe in her divorcing him she's protected from the copyright holders coming after the money she and her kids got from the settlement.

Shame that this dude is going to jail, but bankers, politicians, insider traders, war profiteers, energy magnates et al are running around scot free. Who had their wells poisoned? Who had their pension drained? Who had their home foreclosed on?

Megaupload was a place where people could just upload stuff, and some people uploaded illegal stuff. They could have went after Youtube just as hard, but they haven't.

Look at shit like this: http://www.reddit.com/r/fullmoviesonyoutube

If dude truly cares about his kids' upbringing, that may be the angle. Give the wife the company so she has the money, then trust that she will raise the children using that money.
He would likely end up in prison either way, since I can only imagine his accusers wouldn't stop the legal shenanigans until they won or he ran out of money and gave them the win by default; taking the road that ends best for his family is the proper road to walk at that point.

It's particularly disgusting that "Sue until the other guy runs out of money and goes out of business" is a valid legal tactic for getting your way.

I think its more that in case the government comes for all of his money, well, it's "gone." It belong to his ex-wife and kids, and them only. They can't touch it because it's not affiliated with him, or his legal proxies, any more.

If they were still married, there'd be a link, allowing them to go after the couple's finances.

Now, there's nothing stopping the ex-wife from just running off with all the money and leaving him with nothing, but because they're no longer married, the government can't go after her assets unless it can link her to the case against MegaUpload.

whatever precedent allows a man or woman to "win" their ex-spouse's company in a divorce, against the founder/owner's wishes

assuming that is what happened, of course

If you a high net worth individual, you should not get married legally at all. Put a ring, throw a party, get life insurance, put them in your will, but don't let the state get involved.

It's not even a gender thing. Halle Berry is paying out of her eyeballs in child support to her former husband. Same with Britney Spears.

I would have never thought 10 million dollars was a significant amount of money for him. I was convinced the dude was loaded in the hundreds of millions.

If i remember correctly he is loaded big time BUT government froze his accounts so he can´t access it

He had a lot of money in singpore or taiwan and the government bascially said "ours now".

Money can't buy love but it helps folks tolerate being around someone/

He doesn't own her.
Didn't imply he did? If he helps set up a new organization under her name to get back on his feet and she runs with it, that's pretty fucked up. If they're both in it together still and this is a publicity stunt, then it's not so bad.

More to get around the US Justice Department having his assets frozen, but your point and inquiry still stand.
