Time: 13 Reasons I’d Still Pick Nintendo’s Wii U Over the PS4 and Xbox One

#13 is not a reason.

For the power that it has, it is absolutely not worth (to me; in before someone says something) $300.

I wish they would cut off the basic version (if they haven't already) and just sell me a WiiU without the GamePad.

So.. Wonder who's the one who'll win this threads: Nintendo sucks - troll award..

I kind of miss those "Nintendo is doomed"
days.. I somehow felt even the trolls were giving more to the conversation..

Been very happy with my Wii U. With how bad some of the 3rd party games have been this year, I made a good decision to wait until 2015 to jump in to Xbone/PS4. My PS360 is running solid so I'm good for now.

I like how he writes off the PS4/Xbox One remasters as "recycling bin material" and then lists Wind Waker HD as one of the Wii U's standouts.

How many remasters have Wii U gotten, and how old were those games, vs the PS4/Xbox One remasters, that is what 1 year old?

Who could argue with that list? I mean because Nintendo has opened up a new studio and because Smash has sold well I'm rushing out to buy another WiiU tomorrow. With the likes of CoD and Destiny selling so poor and Sony never invests in new studios imma sell my PS4 to fund it.

What an awful list. Though to be fair it's probably 13 more reasons then I could think of for owning a WiiU over a PS4

This.

1) Price Drop
2) Zelda

For me, those are the only 2 reasons that I'll need to buy a Wii U. Until then, no sale

How low does the Wii U price have to drop? Zelda has been announced, so we know it's happening.

I'm waiting for Fallout 4 or Mass Effect 4 to get a PS4, those havent even been given an approximate date of release. So that's why the PS4 is a no go for me.

Ok.....that took a lot of words to say "Because I like Nintendo games". It does not change the opinion of the vast majority of the gaming public that they don't want to buy a $300 primarily Nintendo game only console.

Here is a hint. If you want to win over more people to your side, you have to give arguments for the people that don't already agree with you.

The statement is still correct though, as there is no way MS or Sony would be able to support their consoles with 1st party only, while the WiiU sure as hell isn't as popular as the PS4 but is still able to carve a niche and make a profit.

The 64 million dollar question is for how long this will remain a factor in the future.

You think Nintendo will be profitable with the Wii U? Covering what costs exactly? R&D for the console itself, marketing for the console itself, potential losses from lossleader exclusive software like Bayonetta/TW101/Devil's Third [presuming it follows the same sales trend]?

Or do you just mean that Nintendo can still have a profitable fiscal quarter even with the Wii U selling so poorly and not that the console itself can be seen as a profitable endeavor?

In UK its £ 300 (if you can find a shop selling it). Its roughly same price as Ps4 / Xb1.

In the PAL latest sales charts there is NO Wii U game in top 40. None.

Maybe different in USA.

I thought pasting an entire article in the first post like that wasn't allowed, unless something's changed?

I had no clue if that's the case. I only added the rest of the article because people would see something on the list and call it stupid without bothering to see why (The Kyoto building especially)

Well you could get a refurb Wii U for $200, but year Zelda ain't coming for a bit. For me Smash was the breaking point, I couldn't resist anymore. I really like Nintendo games and they still know how to make fantastic software. I personally won't shed a tear if they gave up hardware but I don't see that happening any time soon, so I don't mind buying one of their systems when the right kind of game comes out that I really want. I gotta also give them credit for making titles like Splatoon which looks fantastic and it's a very interesting new IP from them. Hopefully with them expanding their internal dev teams we'll see more unique stuff from them in the future, the constant updates to Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong is fine but they need more variety and stuff like Splatoon is what I want to see more of.

I think I agree with number 2, actually. Nintendo hasn't had good third party support since the N64 (and even that was shaky) and they've done just fine. They don't need third parties if they can keep growing their fan base.
I don't think they're really doing that now, but it seems that they're gearing up to do just that in the near future. Honestly, I think that's the smarter way to go about things at this point.

Sonic Boom?
Still the least amount of broken games. At least tied.

Good thing the article specifically says 13 Reasons I'd Pick Nintendo's Wii U... and not 13 Reasons You Should Pick Nintendo's Wii U.

Electricity costs money, doesn't it?

Playing on Wii U for 5 hours costs the same as playing on PS4 for 1 hour.

Yes, that 40 vs 180kWh/y is an incredibly significant difference.

household1s6eci.gif

"I'm sorry Timmy, but you can't have a PS4, because we'll reach 11,880kWh/y. Have a WiiU instead, it'll get our bill down to 11,740"

For fun, here's the cost of each console's yearly online added to their average yearly energy cost.

  • PS4: Online: 50$ Energy Cost $~22 Total: $~72/year
  • Xbone: Online: 60$ Energy Cost $~27 Total: $~87/year
  • Wii U: Online: Free Energy Cost $4.44 Total: $~5/year

How many remasters have Wii U gotten, and how old were those games, vs the PS4/Xbox One remasters, that is what 1 year old?

Still, a little desingenious calling them cheap remakes. GTAV seems to be the prime example of putting effort beyond the line of duty.

8. It’s powerful enough…
9. …while not at all power-hungry

da fuck does that mean? Does the writer actually care about how much power they use?

Time is for adults or young adults. Power is a big factor since it's the cost you have to pay every month to play the console. Some people pay electricity pretty heavily.

Which GAF Nintendo fanboy wrote that? Wii U is great, but for most people looking to buy one console this gen, it ain't the Wii U. It's a great secondary console for sure and Nintendo's own games are ace.
I share the same sentiments with you. This whole article is written with the premise that the reader likes Nintendo franchises. If you don't, I have no idea what the person is going to do. However, it compliments a PS4/X1 nicely in my opinion.

Correction, PS4 is $22. Significant savings though, especially for a casual user. Especially coupled with free online.

I used Illinois as a basis for my numbers, so explicitly stated PS4 was coming out at 21.3$ but, I was going by ballpark the numbers being the same. But yes, all in all, the savings are actually an appreciable albeit not staggering, amount of money. Add up the PS+/XBLG subscriptions and it adds up for your casual user.

Couldn't you make a list, "13 reasons Why you should buy a PS3 instead of a WiiU", without reaching as far as this guy had to ?

Anyone who says "Wii U is powerful enough" should be forced to include PS3 and Xbox 360 in their comparisons. Both of which are inexpensive, with robust libraries full of exclusives.

The fact that some people enjoy nintendo games is really offensive to other people

No it's not. What's offensive is people coming up with all sorts of stupid lists for why the stuff they like is so superior even though the rest of us couldn't give two shits. If you like Nintendo games, great, but don't invent reasons like this list to tell us why the Wii U is so amazing. Half of this list is padding in order to make an article out of what could have been said with these five words, "I am a Nintendo fanboy". Here's a newsflash, it doesn't matter how many times people tell us it's the best console of the three, or how many "best of ever" games people claim are on it, it's the also ran of this console generation and it will never be anything else. Enjoy it for what it is, but accept the fact that most people couldn't care less about it and move on. I realize this site can get bad with the Sony slurping, but there is nothing worse than a Nintendo zealot, and that's what the guy who wrote this article is.

I liked the lineup for the Wii U last year, had good use of out it. This year, I'm not getting much out of any of the consoles I own, including my freshly purchased PS4. Instead, two PC games and two 3DS games are my holiday gaming lineup. I just really need to start waiting until later in the generation to buy hardware. I'm too impulsive when it comes to any kind of tech.

Gotta comment on the power bit though: no one is counting the handful of dollars when buying a new gaming device.

If you're on a thin budget and penny pinching in general, sure, you look for ways to keep utilities down but no one is buying a new gaming console with 40-60+ dollar software with this in mind and it takes some asinine levels of fandom to try and prop this up as a talking point.

13 is the only legitimate reason you can use in an article being distributed by Time. The rest sounds like a fanboys interpretation of how feel validated, I mean using the opening of a new studio as a reason why the games are better wat???

If half of those games are actually released in 2015 then it will certainly be a great year for Nintendo.

For me I couldn't justify getting an XB1 in addition to my PS4, too many similar titles and not enough exclusives to make it worth it. Also 2 different online subs, no thanks, it already sucks paying for one. With the Wii U you get Nintendo games which are arguably some of the highest quality games on the market and very different than the stuff everyone else produces, also no sub for online (and online games that work really well too!). It's a really great secondary platform for people that can justify buying a second system for Nintendo games. It's too bad it has to be like that, it would be really nice if Nintendo had a system that had all the big 3rd party titles along with their own great games like the NES/SNES was. I don't think that'll ever happen again though.

It's a great second console and the de-facto platform to own if you already have a gaming PC. But I could never be satisfied with just a Wii U

What's with all these publications jumping on the Wii U train all of a sudden?

It's a pretty balanced article, even if some of the actual points are like what.

1 "remaster" for all 3 platforms. All of them has more than 1 ports. Remasters from 3rd party games shouldn't matter because MS/Sony has nothing to do with them.

How many major remasters have Sony and MS put out? 1 each? Nintendo? 1. It's not Sony and MS's fault that they've actually successfully engendered third party support to the degree that third parties also feel compelled to release remasters of their own.

Bad for you that you didn't read the article. Specifically this part...

You could buy them all, of course, but that’s a hardcore move and financially impractical for most. You could pick two, and even if you’re dead set on owning gaming with a PC, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, there’s a powerful argument here for the Wii U as a must-have secondary system, given the caliber of its exclusive content.

You are accusing the same guy that wrote the same article called "Nintendo probably can't save the Wii U" a few months ago a Nintendo zealot... Sounds like you are stretching more than the author who penned this article.

It definitely has the better games. Frankly, there isn't a single non-remake on either PS4 or XBONE that looks remotely interesting. In fact, the only PS4 game I even care about is TLoU. But that's really it.

No, it's just that a lot of people here live in homes that have two or three times the space they need, and they have to heat and cool all of it depending on the time of the year.

How about turning the lights off then, Now there's a thought. Same with petrol consumption and those large ass cars.

Global warming is a thing and North America is definitely near or at the top of worst offenders.

Reasoning is terrible.

I understand the need for a colorful minority opinion, but there are more valid reasons than anything he listed.
