Etrian Odyssey x Mystery Dungeon cross-over announced during livestream

jj984jj

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
It's going to be mostly MD with an EO skin, but that "skin" will include stuff that EO is known for like character creation for the party, a menu driven town, the various classes in EO, a HP/TP system, EO themed dungeons and monsters, and stuff like resource gathering at points of the dungeon. But the majority of the gameplay - dungeon exploration, combat, presentation, will be MD style.

Those are some great things to take from EO (well aside from a menu driven town maybe), really interested in this.

God I'm so excited about this, I wanted crossovers that kept the awesome EO characters and I'm finally getting one.

Seeing the Dancer in the trailer made me so happy.

Awesome.

I dabbled with Mystery Dungeon via the Pokemon games and I had a good time, so this should be good. It looks like you can still choose your own designs too, which is awesome.

(Please, please, PLEASE tell me hunger isn't a thing though)

I just noticed this in the official site:

セーブデータ数: 1 (別途中断セーブ:1)
価格: 6,980円 (税別)

What the fuck Spike Chunsoft! It's going backwards. Single save slot with an additional suspend save. Fuuuuuck. And it's going to be 6980yen? Really pricey for a 3DS game!

Now this could be fun.
I've never gotten into the Etrian Odyssey series, they just seem to static for me. Mystery Dungeon games I do enjoy a lot however (such a shame we only got the first Shiren).
I do like the art style from the Etrian Odyssey games though so a Mystery Dungeon set in that universe will hopefully be fun.

Hopefully this comes to europe in a timely fashion.
Lets just hope Segas recently new focus on digital only doesn't mean we will only get it digital.

Get EO4 if you want to get into the series, it's available in Europe and you might like it.

It will also help as most of the EO4 classes seem to be in the Mystery Dungeon game.

I'm sure it will. All the EO titles have been, and a lot of Mystery Dungeon ones have been also.
Depends where the asker is from. Not in Europe, only NA has seen localisations of all the EO games, we missed II and III.

The eshop really helps though, and we had EO Untold, so I'm mildly optimistic.

God damn, I hope this isn't the kind of game that I want several save files for.

But when looking at actual Mysterious Dungeon games, they have tended to have multiple save slots. Although not all of them do, IIRC.

Err, yes. The first Mystery Dungeon game was on SNES, and it starred Torneko from Dragon Quest 4. Then Chunsoft created its own series of Mystery Dungeon games called Shiren the Wanderer, the first of which was also on SNES. Since then, there have been several more Shiren games, several more Torneko games, three Final Fantasy Mystery Dungeon games (Chocobo's Dungeon 1 and 2 on PSX, and Chocobo's Dungeon on Wii), in addition to the Pokemon games.

Here is a list.

Oh wow, I knew there were Torneko spin-off games, but I'm not even sure I knew they were Mystery Dungeon games, much less that they were the original Mystery Dungeon series. Wow! (Also sucks, since it seems like SE won't allow for rereleases of anything in the DQ series on VC, PSN, etc, even in Japan, just remakes and apparently mobile ports, so I'm sure I won't get to play those any time soon).

Also, I guess this will be my first foray into the Mystery Dungeon series, since I'm not about to let an EO game pass me by.

Koichi Nakamura, the founder of Chunsoft, was actually one of the co-creators of the Dragon Quest series. He was the main programmer for Dragon Quest 1, and he and his company worked as the programmers for all of the games up through 5. One of the staff members loved Rogue but they felt that it was really difficult to get into, so they decided to take a similar approach to that type of game that was taken with Dragon Quest with regards to Wizardry and Ultima, and the inspiration for that came specifically from chapter 3 of DQ4, Torneko's chapter.

Oh, huh. Today I learned that the Mystery Dungeon series started with Torneko, not Shiren.

I've always thought that their inspiration came from Dragon Crystal, for the Game Gear. I mean, Torneko was released almost three years after Dragon Crystal and it's remarkably similar to Sega's game. This can't be a coincidence. At all.

Straight into my veins please. Sunk a ridiculous number of hours into Shiren for DS and was always bummed more of them were never localized. Very hopeful this will be and will give some more exposure to the genre. Trailer gameplay looks solid so far, can't wait to learn more details.

They're similar because they're both based on Rogue.

The genesis of the Mystery Dungeon series is well-documented.

1UP: Yeah, the Sound Novels have never come to the United States, but a few of the Mystery Dungeon games have. I'm actually big fan of those. I was wondering if you could talk about the inspiration for that. I guess they're based on the game Rogue, or they're very similar, at least? Which seems like a very challenging sort of source material for a video game. Could you speak about that?

KN: Exactly. There was a staff member on the team that really liked Rogue, but Rogue is a difficult game, a very hardcore game. You use the whole alphabet [Rogue used ASCII text in place of graphics]. In the beginning, I played it for a whole week and didn't see what was supposed to be so much fun about it. But after that, I started to understand the game. Ultima and Wizardry are also difficult games, but what we did with those games is, they took those games and made a more easy-to-understand version of them, which was Dragon Quest. We wanted to approach Rogue in a similar way, make a more understandable, more easy-to-play version of Rogue, which was the Mystery Dungeon series. Torneko's Big Adventure was the first title that we put out in the series.

Huh. Neat info. Thanks for sharing, cuz I never knew all of this.

I'm so happy I got on the EO bandwagon.

I'd always seen them as SMT's weaker, less atmospheric cousin and had written them off for that reason. I tried Untold a few months ago and was hooked.

I still have to give EO4 a try... and now with Persona Q, this new spinoff and EO5 coming... niiice!

Did anyone take a good look at the classes available during the stream? I thought they were only using classes from EO1 and 2, but during the stream they also mentioned the Runemaster, which is from 4. There were also 3 locked classes in the character creation menu.

There's Dancer too.

The only roguelike I've spent a decent amount of time with was Shiren the Wanderer on Wii. I loved the game, but I wasn't a fan of having partner characters. They were often more of a liability than an asset.
Sensei's refusal to equip shields made him so frail. Protecting him was a pain at times.
I'm wondering how well party members will work in this game considering they are a big part of EO.

I checked out the video of the reveal again. In the character creation screen, the classes are
Landsknecht
Protector
Gunner
Runemaster
Medic
Dancer
Hexer
and 3 locked classes. One of them will be Princess, judging by one of the screenshots in the Famitsu article.

If I can only have 4 characters then I'd go:

Dancer, Gunner, Hexer, Princess.

I'm sure Princess will be in, it's the second favorite class of everyone(Gunner being #1).

Watching the video, having the Ariadne Threads seem like quite the reduction in risk, and I am a bit disappointed that they went with the menu-based town. Still looking forward to it, but hopefully the gameplay in the upper levels are more interesting than what they showed. The branching paths seem neat.

Are the Chocobo games actually Mysterious Dungeon games or just knockoffs? I don't think Chunsoft developed or published any of them.
