Sega Saturn Appreciation and Emulation Thread

Powerslave, everybody!

Actually getting back into that game lately. I mean, I've had it since I was a freshman in college, which was eight years ago, and I still haven't beaten it (still using the same save from back then, tho!). Trying to rectify that, and it's been quite fruitful; got all the artifacts, got all the transmitter pieces, I think I got all the weapons, even got three of the Team Dolls for good measure; just need to beat all the stages and rest easy.

I just wasn't expecting a dev team member's head to grace my title screen today, is all

Wait, seriously? That is the first I've seen that happening. Do you even know what you did to have that title screen happen? I beat Exhumed with all the dolls and everything and never saw that.

If it's a game that was released on a popular system like pc\playstation 1-3 etc, then most chances I've already played it if i wanted to(like SOTN,for example).

Therefore I'm asking about saturn only games, since I surely never played those.
Though games that were also released on Dreamcast and Arcade also count,i guess, as I never owned a DC and not interested in arcade games(nor do i have arcades where I live).

DO you consider arcade conversions ?

Recently played through Last Bronx and did a quick writeup. It's right up there with DOA for most visually stunning 3D game on the Saturn - it's one of the titles that really showcases what the system could do in the hands of a capable developer.

I challenge your claim that LB lacks distinct gameplay features - guard cancelable attacks appear much more significantly than they do in VF, and the game doesn't have ringouts like SC or VF. The tutorial even teaches you how to use guard cancels in mixups iirc.

I've been playing the Saturn version of RE lately, i feel like there are some differences in descriptions, namely the room with the aging paintings and the camera angle in the underground lab, the room were you gotta cover the gas vents in order to get the MO Disk code.

Been trying to chart out the differences outside of the ones that everyone's familiar with.

But yea, sega saturn is awesome.

That's fair, and that tutorial is pretty awesome, even if you don't speak Japanese. Tekken kinda beat it to the ring out thing though. Was going for a "casual" vibe with the writeup... I'm far from a definitive authority on fighting games. Thanks for the feedback!

Played through In the Hunt last night and had a blast, even though I am far from good at shooters.

I hear that the game has less slowdown on PSX - Any truth to that rumor?

Yes.

A while back I ended up selling my NA copy of Saturn In the Hunt and getting the JP PS1 import on the cheap. Great game on either platform, and neither is supposedly arcade perfect. Less slowdown and not having to worry about what combination of RAM cart + controllers won me over on the PS1 version though. The Saturn NA version is really finicky, lol.

I always play with a PAR plugged in, so I had no idea this game benefited from the RAM cart. Interesting. What do you mean by "combination of RAM carts/controllers?"

It doesn't. Mine just didn't boot with one inserted. I'm surprised yours does! Do you have a model 1 or 2 saturn?

The Playstation version has a lot less slowdown, a code to get rid of the rest of the slowdown, an alternate (and great, and PS1-exclusive) CD audio music option in addition to the arcade PCM soundtrack in the arcade and Saturn games, and it saves your high scores to a memory card too, something you can't do on Saturn for some stupid reason. No stupid bugs that keep it from working, unlike the Saturn version, either. It's the far better version all around.

Some Saturn or Saturn + Arcade or PC but not on other consoles games that I've got and like:

Willy Wombat (J) - overhead isometric 3d platformer
Bulk Slash (J) - 3d mech action/shooting
Cyber Speedway - racing
Galactic Attack/RayForce/etc. (also on PC, PS2 in Japan only, and arcade; only US release is on Saturn)
Bug! - early 3d platformer (I like it a lot, anyway!)
Bug Too! - early 3d platformer
Panzer Dragoon II: Zwei (the first PD is on Xbox as a bonus in PDO so I'm not counting it, but PDII isn't) - rail shooter
Panzer Dragoon saga
Sakura Taisen Hanagumi Taisen Columns (J) - puzzle
Steamgear Mash (J) - isometric platform/shooter
Baku Baku (also on Game Gear and PC) - puzzle
Die Hard Arcade (only US home release) - beat 'em up
V.R.: Virtua Racing (really is a separate game; great if you have a wheel!) - racing
CrimeWave - car combat (hard but rewarding game!)
Clockwork Knight 1 & 2 - 2.5d platformer
Solar Eclipse (US exclusive; also on PS1 in EU and JP) - rail shooter, basically
Magical School Lunar! (J) - RPG
Assault Suit Leynos 2 (J) - side-scrolling mech run & gun/shooter
Solo Crisis (J) - strategy game
Grandia: Digital Museum - RPG (Saturn-exclusive extra content collection)
Blazing Heroes/Mystaria - tactical strategy
Wachenroder (J) - tactical strategy
Vatlva (J) - 6 player multiplayer car combat (single-screen, topdown)
Terra Phantastica (J) - tactical strategy
Farland Saga: Toki no Douhyou (J) - tactical strategy
Mobile Suit Gundam Gaiden chapters I, II, and III (J) - first person mech action sim
NinPen Manmaru (J) - 3d platformer

And plenty of others, many of which have been mentioned.

Okay games, might be worth looking up, or maybe not: Robotica, Battle Monsters, Ghen War, Bouken Katsugeki Monomono (J), F1 Challenge, Hang-On GP (another one to get if you have a wheel, not so much otherwise), Linkle Liver Story (J), Waku Waku Puyo Puyo Dungeon (J), plenty more

Also on Playstation, but better on Saturn: Mass Destruction, Soviet Strike, Mega Man 8, all Capcom fighting games that support the 1MB and 4MB carts, Dead or Alive (J), etc.

PDS is a cool experience but not worth $300 at ALL. Buy it, beat it a few times (doesn't take long), then sell it. Ideally it won't have costed you a dime.

100% agreed. Dragon Force is FAR more worth the price and has infinitely more replay value.

Yeah, this is probably what I'm going to do. Might as well think of it as a (very expensive) rental at this point.

I would pay the going price right now for a copy if I could be sure of the quality. Biggest thing getting in the way of me buying the high priced games is not being able to tell if there are things like cracks in the manual/cover art or scratches on the disk from online listing pictures.

Cross-posting from PS1 thread just in case anyone can help:

So I've been playing Spot Goes to Hollywood and there's a secret level I can't find the secret exit for, for the life of me. My wife and I have been scouring the level preceding levels in World 2 - Adventure for quite a while, these are Ancient Ruins and Wooden Walkway. The secret level is right after these so we suspect it's in Wooden Walkways but...we can't find it. Anywhere. We also can't seem to find any walkthroughs or Let's Plays that go through the whole game and find the secret exits. There are some for the Genesis game but that one has different levels. There's one in Russian but we don't speak Russian and it's not clear where the secret exit is. Ah, man. We would really like to figure this out. If anyone can help please let me know! Thanks!

I'm not much of a JRPG guy and I really liked PDS. The combat mechanics are only a little more interesting than the usual, but the aesthetics really sell everything.

Really regret selling it in 2010. It wasn't worth what it is today, either. :(

Well, I think DF having more replay value is pretty much a fact, with all the campaigns and variety.
Depends. I didn't have any motivation to do another campaign with someone else, myself. I like the game but I don't think it's that good to replay with a different path. But, I do it all the times with the Souls games, for example, whereas for most once is enough.

What are everyone's favourite "wait, that was a Saturn game to?" Titles. I keep meaning to get my hands on Wipeout 2097 to sed how it plsys with the Saturn controller, but its a bit expensive in these 'ere parts (especially when compared to the PS version.

I fired up Space Hulk the other day. An abdolute cracker regardless of format. The modern version actually feels like a step back in the imagination stakes.
