1. Legend of Grimrock 2 ; Easily my favorite game this year. I absolutely loved the first Legend of Grimrock, and would have been completely happy if the sequel was just set in another dungeon. Instead, it's set on an island with forests, a swamp, a cemetary and crypt, a desert, a pyramid, and multiple dungeons. The puzzles are again great, neither too easy nor too hard, and the real-time combat is improved even more with new AI behaviors on the enemies. Legend of Grimrock II is a fantastic game.

dc5ZgR2.jpg

2. Operation Abyss: New Tokyo Legacy ; (JP Import) Another dungeon crawler, and not the last on my list either. A more traditional, Wizardry-inspired game from Experience Inc. The dungeons and enemies can get pretty difficult, which is what you want from an Experience game. Crafting and item enhancement is improved, and the UI looks great. NISA is localizing this for next year, those who liked Demon Gaze should definitely check it out.

J2gqJmi.jpg

3. Bravely Default ; The best Final Fantasy game in years. The mostly traditional battle system is spruced up with the option to Brave or Default. The main characters are enjoyable and the story is (mostly) solid. Great soundtrack.

jM5WIEl.jpg

4. Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth ; I love Persona 3. I love Persona 4. I love dungeon crawlers.

cAXgncC.jpg

5. Driveclub ; Even with the problems at launch, Driveclub would have been in my top ten. Now that everything is fixed, and with weather update, it's moved up a couple places. The driving feels great, and it's one of the best looking games available.

C1bVzgT.jpg

6. Dragon Age: Inquisition ; It's a lot like Dragon Age: Origins, which is a good thing. My only problem with it is that I think Bioware swung too far away from Dragon Age II and added too many sidequests that feel hollow and meaningless.

hRylTXt.jpg

7. Dark Souls II ; I'm in the minority that likes Demon's Souls more than Dark Souls. An actual hub area and the ability to warp between bonfires from the start address some of my biggest problems with the first Dark Souls.

DTHIOSe.jpg

8. Freedom Wars ; I enjoy most hunting genre games, but Freedom Wars is different enough in its presentation and battle mechanics to prevent it from being "just another hunting game." It's not without problems, like the weird crafting system, but the good far outweighs the bad.

jUH3WHz.png

9. Flowers ; (JP Import) An all-ages yuri visual novel from Innocent Grey could be at the top of a biggest surprises list. The first installment of Flowers, spring, is beautifully illustrated with a fantastic soundtrack. There isn't much closure at the end, but as the first installment of a four-part series, I expect things will wrap up by the end.

WQLkFSc.jpg

10. New LovePlus+ ; (JP Import) The biggest change from the previous installment is the addition of seasonal vacation trips. The trips all use the real-time clock advancement from LovePlus + on the DS, but with a new option to view all the events you missed in a row, so you don't miss out on anything.

1. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze ; Even though I enjoyed DKC returns on the Wii a lot, this game took me completely by surprise. Just non-stop pleasure on every front. Great mechanics, beautiful world design, detailed animations, fun boss fights with personality, a ton of secrets, one of the most wonderful OSTs of all time, the list of great things about this game goes on and on and on. I'm ashamed I was ever in the "retro is working on F__ing Donkey Kong!" camp. Retro if you want to go ahead and make it a trilogy of this quality, you'll get nothing but praise from me.

2. Shadow of Mordor ; I got suckered into buying my PS4 earlier than I expected. I saw a good deal with Destiny packed in, and thought even if the game is just a bigger, cooler version of halo it'll be amazing just to see what bungie can achieve with an unprecedented budget and years and years of development time. A tedious skeleton of a game with a lot of corners cut and content gutted to be sold to you piece by piece, apparently. I felt like such an idiot...Fortunately Mordor came along and made my PS4 purchase worthwhile. It's not just Arkham Creed, though it executes stealth and batman style combat very well - it's a whole new ball game because of the way nemesis system can lead to fun, unique confrontations. I can feel good about my PS4 purchase until Bloodborne comes along and the generation really gets started.

3. Diablo III Reaper of Souls; I kind of dropped Diablo III with a "meh" back in the day. The type of excitment and fear I used to associate with Diablo when I was young I get from the Souls games now. Diablo III had a ton of "cool" stuff in it but it just didn't fit together properly in a way that was deeply fun, more like something alot of people would enjoy for a little while but no one could enjoy deeply. The expansion pretty much addresses that directly. The hard difficulty levels are challenging and force you to creatively use your huge arsenal of interesting skills. The loot is rebalanced not to support real life transactions but to keep playing interesting and rewarding. And adventure mode is designed so you can jump in, crush a dungeon with or without friends, and then go do what you gotta do, its great! I imagine in a few years from now, after adding a ton of content and balancing things out, Destiny can be a good loot game too. But not this good.

4. Mario Kart 8 ; Endlessly fun multiplayer with lush visuals and beautiful music...Just another day at the office for nintendo. And now my mii can wear Samus' helmet! Looking forward to even more high quality DLC!

5. Dark Souls II ; The honour of being the worst Souls game puts this title head and shoulders above the majority of the industry. I could deal with so many of their mistakes but removing the perfect feeling of control and movement you have in Dark Souls and replacing it with an awkward, less responsive control scheme breaks my heart. It's a real shame. Watching those less smooth animations on the weapons that don't have a great feeling of weight...I don't even...All you had to do was make it like like game of the generation, Dark Souls! Oh well. Bloodborne cometh.

x. Honourable mentions abound for games I just haven't spent enough time with like Bayo 2, Bravely Default, Smash, Dragon Age, Persona Q and the like. Life is just busy when you are old. Sometimes you come home exhausted and playing a game sort of feels like more work. Plus alot of the games I did find enjoyable are the type you play over and over after beating like Mario Kart 8 and Reaper of Souls, which makes it hard to play more games because you spend so much time replaying the same ones.

I think I'm working SO HARD on my list, and then TheGeoKing comes along and makes me look like a chump.

In all seriousness, great stuff. Nicely done, man.

1. DRAGON AGE INQUISITION ; 86 hours in( single player, have about 20 in multi), level 17, haven't finished it yet, haven't stopped exploring, great story.

2. Super Smash Bros ; Megaman (there's more....but Megaman)

3. South Park SoT; Funniest game I've ever played, also a fantastic RPG.

I would add these but I have to put in more time/beat them;

DK Tropical Freeze
Bayonetta 2
Transistor

1. Divinity: It had a wonderful combat system and well designed quests with multiple ways your could resolve them. The story wasn't amazing but it was well written for what it way, and more crucially the writing/design did an excellent job at rewarding exploration from the player discovering sentinel wells to reveal side-quests to falling upon wily treasure chests who'd scamper away to protect its innards, It still lacked a compelling narrative or decent characters.
2. South Park: It's kind of sad but this game was consistently enjoyable. It was probably my least favourite Obsidian release, but the only single player game released this year I didn't see any downsides to.
3. Shovel Knight: Fantastic retro sidescroller.
4. Transistor: I didn't love the game like I did Bastion but it was well designed and Royce was my favourite character of the year; his melancholic delivery along with how that fit within the context of the story really set him apart from anything I'd seen before.
5. Lethal League: Really fun multiplayer game.
6. Nosgoth: See above.

It was a pretty bad year for games for me. Nothing had the emotional resonance that I had with Infinite last year and Dota was way more fun than anything else.

1. Divinity Original Sin: Best RPG to release in the last 6 years, and does something interesting with the co-op gameplay
2. The Talos Principle: Interesting mechnaics with a fantastic atmosphere and message
3. Legend of Grimrock 2: Improves on the original in almost every way, a centrepeiece dungeon crawler.
4. Endless Legend: Great visual style and a unique take on the 4X genre, let down by weak AI
5. Bayonetta 2: One of the best action games in recent years

1. Persona Q ; Characters from the most popular Persona games, SMT combat and character building that begs to be broken (for fun), and tremendous Etrian Odyssey dungeons combine to create easily my favorite game of the year.

2. Dragon Age: Inquisition ; This game casts a wide net, which is why so many people think so highly of it, but ultimately, I think going as big as it went caused this game to feel super shallow in some areas (most noticeably in the decision tree department and though I think the incidental sidequests are leagues better than Skyrim's they, too, feel insubstantial in the end). I think cutting down on a few of the zones (you can easily finish the game without touching two or three of them) and creating a deeper connection in the remaining areas would have made this game much better than it already is.

3. Bravely Default ; "A very promising beginning" is a phrase that applies to Bravely Default on multiple levels. Not only is the game itself a very promising beginning for a new series that hopefully represents Square-Enix returning to what it does best, but Bravely Default also has a very promising beginning... that it unfortunately doesn't quite live up to by the end. Still, FFV's job system is my favorite JRPG mechanic ever (it is the only reason I consider Blue Dragon a good game), so I rate Bravely Default very highly if for no other reason.

x. Dark Souls 2 ; To me, this is just more Dark Souls, which is fine, but not worth any GOTY points for it.

x. Broken Age Act One ; Development drama aside (there was a point where I felt that even if the game never came out or was awful, the Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter was worth backing for the 2 Player Productions documentary alone), Broken Age was a beautiful, well crafted adventure game with a nice cliffhanger act break.

x. Pokemon Alpha Sapphire ; GEN III is still my favorite Pokemon generation (even if GSC had my two favorite moments in the series), but really, this is just another Pokemon game.

x. Diablo III: Reaper of Souls ; I played over 1000 hours of Diablo this year, which is pretty shameful, and I really wish I had spent half of that playing other games instead. There's just something about being able to mindlessly grind away at rifts for minimal gain that had me hooked for a few months, so credit for that, I guess.

Wow a lot of diversity in the picks this time around. The contest is much more open than previous years. It will likely go to Dragon Age seeing as it's one of the best multiplatform games. It's also going to be on my short list so I'm kind of okay with it, on the other hand, the missions are a real step down from Mass Effect 3 and so I think people mistake time spent with the game for how much fun they are having a bit, but ymmv.

Seeing as we're already in the double digits, there's no need to hurry, nobody will read my list but me anyway, so I'm going to take my sweet time probably.

1. Dragon Age: Inquisition ; Simply amazing game that I've sunk more hours into than any game this year. It may not be perfect (bloody Sera avoiding my advances) but easily deserves my GOTY. Wish some of those fetch quests were cut a bit though.
2. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor ; I don't like Ass Creed games in general, but even though this took a lot from them I really enjoyed this game. Almost made me rage-quit a couple of times early on but once you get the hang of it (and level up a bit)... wow. The Nemesis System seemed the first time this generation a game implemented something unique and new..
3. Transistor ; The style of this game is astounding. If games are ever considered an art form then this one will be held up as a shining example. I really liked experimenting with the different modules & slot combinations to keep mixing stuff up.
4. Infamous: Second Son ; Beautiful game that blew me away at times. Ok so the combat was a bit shallow and the main character a bit unlikable, but something about it resonated with me. It was... *gasp* fun?
5. Papers, Please ; One of those games that doesn't come around very often, but when it does... makes you laugh, makes you think, and you had fun doing it. Never got round to playing it on PC so I got the iPad version, which seems like the perfect fit.
6. Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition ; Another game I never got round to playing on PC, I got this on the PS4 and sunk far too many hours into it.
7. Jazzpunk ; Funny, and so so random. If you haven't played this I really recommend it, I'm sad this didn't get more love.
8. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter ; Discovered this thanks to those YouTube 'Lets play' videos that sprang up around it's release. Got a little frustrating at times, but overall very enjoyable. Perfect example of how not all games need to hold your hand.
9. TowerFall Ascension ; I kicked my best mate's arse on this game and he rage-quit. That alone was worth it for me.
10. Civilization: Beyond Earth ; Haven't managed to play as much of this as I would like, but Civilization has always been my drug of choice and this game, much like Alpha Centauri, is like a perfect storm of Gaming & Sci-Fi..

1. Mario Kart 8: It's easy to be biased towards this game when we are four roommates with the same skill level playing it every night. The competition is fierce and addictive. Also, best DLC!

2. Super Smash Wii U: Might get the same status a Mario Kart 8 for us, but it hasn't been out long enough for us to get at a similar skill level. We got drunk and played 6 player smash once, that was awesome!

3. Super Smash 3ds: Pretty cool, but it get's lonely compared to the wii U version

4. Monument Valley: Beautiful. It's like the mobile game version of Journey: short, poetic and hypnotising.

LTTP games:

Super Hexagon: Where has this been all my life?? Beating the final level was so rewarding. I love insane shit like this. and the Music!

VVVVVV: Pretty cool too, doesn't feel as streamlined as super hexagon though. Did the Veni, Vidi, Vici thing and it felt awesome finally nailing it.

Tinder: Best dating sim. ever!

1. Grand Theft Auto V ; Even as a Remaster it's still better than everything else released this year. The new First Person mode is literally a game-changer.

2. The Last of Us: Remastered ; Just like the remastered GTA V, the game was so good last year that it was hard to outdo this year with its new coat of paint.

3. DriveClub ; this is the best-looking, most fun racer I've ever played. It's an almost surreal experience now with its weather patch and tweaked physics.

4. Watch Dogs ; this game definitely got too much hate. It has good graphics (maybe not "mind-blowing") and a lengthy campaign with plenty to see and do in its virtual Chicago.

5. Outlast ; One of my earliest and best experiences on PS4. It's the scariest game I've ever played. Good graphics from a small team, too.

6. Metro 2033 Redux ; Finally had a chance to play this game and I'm glad my first experience was at 1080p/60fps with decent textures on PS4. Much like Wolfenstein, it's open-ended nature and varied guns really add to the replayability.

7. Wolfenstein: The New Order ; Finally a classic-style first person shooter. It felt so good to play a shooter that encouraged exploration, collecting, and branching paths/planning.

8. InFamous: Second Son ; it may have been a little on the short side, but the story, controls, and graphics were the best the series had ever seen.

9. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes ; I know it's basically just one mission, but man was it replayable as heck! I really enjoyed seeing the series finally reach its full potential with an open map and great graphics, due to the Fox Engine.

10. Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition ; rounding off the list is another remaster, but these games simply hold up so well one year later. I'm glad, as a console owner, I got so many games re-released this year that basically run like they should have in 2013 on a good PC rig.

1. Sportsfriends ; Johann Sebastian Joust, Super Pole Riders, BaraBariBall, Hokra. Sportsfriends is the game that reminded me how much I love games. If there's one thing you should know about me when going through my list, is that I have a very specific taste in games. I love narrative, I love the new, I love games that have vision. But what Sportsfriends has, what I love about it, is its pure, unadulterated, straight-from-the-fucking-tap mechanical perfection. Never in so many years have I literally jumped from my couch in sheer adrenaline filled joy at a game - I can't remember the last time I yelled in triump while playing a multiplayer game. But Sportsfriends is special, it's intimate, it's what I'd forgotten that this hobby was so good at: getting four friends together and having an amazing time. This year especially has been a resurgence of the same screen multiplayer game, and Sportsfriends is the defacto, gold standard of fun.
OotZfoc.png

2. Nidhogg ; For much the same reasons as I fell head over heels with Sportsfriends, Nidhogg is a game so delicately crafted. Its systems are simple, its interactions fast and brutal, and all together the game is profoundly tense to play. There are very few elements to Nidhogg - you have a sword, the person sitting next to you has a sword, and you need to murder them. What Nidhogg does so well within its design limitations is make every aspect feel so dramatically powerful. Every swing, every sword throw, is done with equal parts passion and desperation. There are few games with such an intense, immediate response to every action you make, Nidhogg is rewarding and frustrating and hilarious in equal measure.
wyFGSjZ.png

3. Sunset Overdrive ; Great soundtrack, fantastic visual design, fast and fluid gameplay, and impressive character customisation options that feel on the level of Saints Row 2. Sunset Overdrive is the game I wanted to hate, but once the game opens up it turns into an incredibly enjoyable popcorn game, with great weapons and cool abilities - even the game's over the top meta-punk humour ends up with you on its side. Sunset Overdrive is a remarkably solid game, and the best reason to pick up an Xbox One that Microsoft could ever hope for.
LoGNoKG.png

4. The Banner Saga ; A cold, long pillage through some jaw dropping visuals and entertaining turn-based gameplay. The first 3/4rds of this game are an epic, with a world filled with interesting lore, weary folks and long term ramifications to the most unlikely of decisions. The final act of the game is a little disappointing, but with the second game coming next year, I'm eager for more.
LWT4vxA.png

5. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter ; A late addition to the list - Ethan Carter is a quaint, melancholy tale of a long lost mining town and the last story it has left to tell. By far and away the most impressive looking game available, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter's vistas, caves and nooks alike are filled with wonder and mystery.
gp3MMIL.png

6. Transistor ; Its story may have been obtuse, but there's no denying that Transistor is still a treat to play. Its mix-and-match loadout makes combat consistently engaging (despite being a tad too easy), and the soundtrack is absolutely the best of the year. While it never hits the highs of Bastion, Transistor proves to be a solid title worthy of a playthrough for anyone interested in the medium.
0YA2FEc.png

7. Jazzpunk ; At its first look, Jazzpunk appears to be an offensive knockoff of Blendo Game's 50 Flights of Loving. But within minutes I came to realise that Jazzpunk was something of its own, and an incredibly special game. I would dare say that Jazzpunk is the first game to ever be off the 'slapstick' genre, in turn becoming the equivalent of a Saturday morning Warner Brother's cartoon.
oDYv3FE.png

8. Wolfenstein: The New Order ; Cuz you got big guns and you shoot a buncha nazis. Wolfenstein may be made under a new developer, but it still oozes Starbreeze's wonderful pacing and world design. Fans of The Darkness especially should check out Wolfenstein, as it feels more of a sequel than The Darkness 2. Wolfenstein gives a shit, and proves there's still blood to be squeezed from the linear shooter stone.
tB5U51n.png

9. Broken Age: Act 1
UdHesf5.png

10. Divinity: Original Sin

I played 9 games from 2014 in total, so not enough to make 10. Rather than include it all in the list and then just rank them, i cut it down to the 5 i enjoyed the most with 1 honorable mention.

skq9GJt.jpg

5. Mario Kart 8 ; This was the first game that got me to bite on the Wii U. The core game isn't really any different to how it was 20 years on the Super Nintendo, but the colourful range of levels and characters, funky music and simple fun rejuvenated my love for gaming at a time when i was fatigued like hell from serious and gritty games all over the place. Online is great fun too.

ewEhFWw.jpg

4. World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor ; I hadn't played WoW for over 4 years, with the time consuming nature of the game catching up with me. Nothing during that time ever really tempted me back, but Warlords of Draenor really appealed to me with a return to the continent i loved back in Burning Crusade and exploring the characters of old Warcraft games who i always found way more interesting than panda's and shit. Luckily the game is streamlined a lot now so i can enjoy all the content and still have a social life, with awesome new features like the Garrison giving this monolithic MMO a fresh kick into 2014.

lPFoNSs.jpg

3. Dark Souls 2 ; I had so much hype going into this game, with Demon's Souls and Dark Souls being two of my favourite games of the generation just gone. It's maybe fair to say Dark Souls 2 was a tiny bit disappointing at first, with the fast travelling making the world feel all that smaller despite the fact it is actually bigger than the first 2 games combined. That said, core experience of experience a brutally dark fantasy land alone was just as enjoyable as it was in the first 2 games for me - with highlights like the Looking Glass Knight right up there with the best of the series. I didn't try the DLC yet, i am waiting for the PS4 release next year before returning to what was ultimately one of the greatest games i played this year.

OHZVpB6.jpg

2. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U ; How much content can you fit in a game? Smash Bros for Wii U is like a love letter to anyone who grew up playing Nintendo consoles with how much it has to offer. It is the biggest and best game in the series yet, with content to keep me going for months on end. It's still at its best when played locally with friends, giving perhaps the ultimate multiplayer experience this year and enough meaningful single player content (i'm looking at you, Street fighter...) to keep you happy when you're at home by yourself with it.

5zf4dVo.jpg

1. Hearthstone ; This game has forever changed my thoughts on free to play. For starters, free to play doesn't mean you aren't going to spend any money on it. In my case, i've spent about £80 so far and can see myself spending more next year. The game is perfect for when you want something to do in a short break, whilst watching the sport and can be played without interrupting everyone else. Yet unlike other mobile games, it has the quality of a AAA console product oozing with Blizzard magic and polish through and through. The simple mechanics are great for learning the game, and the varied classes and ever growing range of cards offer enormous breadth for strategy and deck building. Ultimately though, unlike other card games i've tried, it's really fun and that's what kept me coming back to Hearthstone all year to make it my GOTY.

x. Super Smash Bros. for 3DS ; Almost as good as the Wii U version. Fundamentally i see them as the same game, but i can see how they will different on this list.

I can't believe a game with such horrid gameplay is gonna win GAF GOTY.

Then I remembered last year. Journey and The Walking Dead hahahaha

1. Destiny ; I have never felt like this for such a long time. I'm sure she'll break up with me in the end though. She can be a bit abusive, but it's really all my fault.

2. Hearthstone ; I thought I was through with card games such as this after Magic the Gathering. Boy, was I wrong.

3. Transistor ; The music and gfx are seldom what makes me love a game. This time I love all parts of the game equally. A wonderful game.

4. Dreamfall Chapters ; Ragnar Tornquist is back. The best dialogue and plot in adventure games today.

also what's with all the "reserved" posts past the first page, I can sort of understand wanting to be on the first page, but after that it seems completely pointless

Ha!

It's so strange. I've quite been enjoying reading through everyone's Top 10 lists, but seeing all the "reserved" posts makes me chuckle.

i.e. The chances of me going back pages & pages to read updated Reserved posts: 0

For you. Going by this thread, it doesn't seems to be the majority opinion. Power rangers like characters? lol, what's that shit. He even used that pre-release gif with the buggy archer.
Power ranger characters is kind of trolly (though a number of them are also not that good) but I just got to level 16 some 40 odd hours in and pretty much agree with him.

op_ivy

Fallen Xbot (cannot continue gaining levels in this class)

1. Sunset Overdrive ; A truly unique new IP with a new twist on gameplay which, in this day and age, should be celebrated. Insomniac nailed virtually every aspect, but absolutely killed it on the movement and traversal options which are neither automatically driven, nor cumbersome, but allow you to quickly and effectively move through the city-scape in fun, fast, and exciting ways.
2. Destiny ; This is an utterly amazing, high flawed, but still fun game. Despite having almost no story whatsoever, destiny manages to still evoke wonder and awe at the universe they've built. Combat is second to none and feels oh so satisfying.
3. Forza Horizon 2 ; While this feels a bit too similar to horizon 1, its still a bloody fantastic game with great handling, a fun collection of events, and a wonderful, if phony, collection of European locations. My biggest complaint is that the game didn't carry over the very best from horizon 1 and feature true rally p2p events complete with co-driver.
4. Titanfall ; Call of Duty with mechs is a fairly apt description but doesn't really do the game justice. Incredible movement options, great scale, and fun gameplay between two distinct experience of pilot and titan, especially when those experiences overlap in pilot vs. titan.
5. Rayman Legends ; Beautiful 2d graphics, awesome music, and a fine tuning of origins gameplay. This is the best 2d platformer I've ever played.
6. Halo: The Master Chief Collection ; This is a toughy, but at the same time an obvious inclusion to a top 10. Halo is my favorite gaming franchise and its amazing to play through all 4 mainline titles in high res and at (mostly) 60 fps. But the game is pretty busted at this point beyond that. Looking forward to one day playing more online when the experience isn't so frustrating. This really should be higher on my list, but for all the issues, I just couldn't place it anywhere else.
7. Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition ; I didn't expect much from this but it turned out to be almost as good a metroidvania as the GAF led me to believe. Enjoyed it immensely, despite feeling some of the mechanics got a bit over-complicated and problematic latter in the game.
8. Tomb Raider Definitive Edition ; I never played this when it originally came out and admittedly only purchased it in the present gen post launch drought. Glad I did though, as I found the presentation and world enticing, the platforming fun, and the combat satisfying. A fun romp and I'm very much looking forward to the next game in 2015.
9. Super Time Force ; Really interesting and unique gameplay mechanic and the game's humor rightfully finds its place in the year's best.

My List so far:

1. Divnitiy OS; Best turn based combat system in a long time. A shame the later maps aren't as fleshed out as the first but overall i'ts been a while since an RPG absorbed me like Divinity did.

2. Transistor; This one was short but sweet. Another great combat system with lots of customisation and combo options. It's also the game whose presentation i liked best. I whish the story was a bit deeper but especially the first playthrough was a great experience.

3. Smash 3DS; It's been a while since i played Smash and i was sceptical about playing it on a handheld but it turned out great.

4. Shadowrun Dragonfall;

5.The Banner Saga; Loved the structure of the game, while some decisions were simply luck rather than getting it "right" through deduction, doing my rescource management through story choices was a great idea. I wish more VN style strategy games implemented this.

6. Civilastion: Beyond Earth; I still need to play more of this, but i like it so far. The change of setting is nice.

I played mostly old stuff this year. I think i'm slowly becoming the type of gamer that plays the releases the releases of the previous year to clear their backlogs :p

1. Dark Souls II ; For all its faults, still the game I enjoyed the most this year, putting in >150 hours and plat'ing (my first PS3 plat too) within a month of release
2. Ace Combat Infinity ; I want to hate this game due to the f2p model, but I just enjoy playing too much. Best online multiplayer title of the year imo.
3. Bayonetta 2 ; Quality sequel (yet to actually finish though, position may change before dealine)
4. Mario Kart 8 ; May actually be better than DD this time 'round, online makes it.
5. Shovel Knight ; Don't know if it's native or scaled but this looks sweet at 1080p on WiiU. Also controls nice, oh and it's fun.

6. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U ; Enjoying it for the large amount of things to do, not entirely enjoying how it feels like Brawl 1.5
7. Mario Golf: World Tour ; I don't know if I should admit to the amount of time I've put into the Mario Golf series, so, I won't. I think I cycled the clock in advance tour though.
8. Killer is Dead: Nightmare Edition ; Stylish, smooth, could've done with a little more complexity to combat though imo.
9. Hyrule Warriors ; Was never a huge fan of DW games but this may lead me to look at them differently from now on.
10. Astebreed ; Fantastic shmup, difficulty spike for final boss is insane though. Final level hard mode requires some crazy precision.

x. Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes ; As much as I enjoyed this, I can't be voting for a demo. Sorry, Kojima.
x. Atelier Rorona Plus: The Alchemist of Arland ; More enjoyable than I thought it was going to be, not entirely similar but would recommend the series to harvest moon fans.

Lot of games I didn't play this year that might've made the list if I had: Talos Principle, Donkey Kong, Valkyria Chronicles, Freedom Wars for example.
Also regarding the GOTY OTs, would like to see a return of the LTTP category, partly because they added a bit of variety, and partly to give people like myself running a year late on releases due to monumental backlogs a bit more to type.

Here we are again. I'm just going to vote two games because I mostly played Wii U this year (even if I have PC, PS3 and 3DS too) and they are my "truly GOTY material".

1. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze ; Amazing 2D platformer, easily my favourite of all I've ever played. The controls, the creativity, the difficulty, the music, the endgame... It gets absolutely all right. Masterpiece.

2. Bayonetta 2 ; I usually don't like hack and slash games as much as other genres like adventures or platformers, but Bayonetta 2 was just a blast to play and watch. Is just insane, in a very good way. Another masterpiece.

x. Mario Kart 8 / Hyrule Warriors / Shovel Knight / Smash Bros ; All great games, but I don't think they are close to the first two. Smash Bros lack of adventure mode and bosses is especially dissapointing after Brawl.

I looked back at the votes, and the influx of Bayonetta 2 being #1 really jumped very high once Dragon Age started getting a ton of votes. I wouldn't be surprised if it wins solely based on the fanbase's initiative to get it to win.

EDIT: For those who see this as an attack on them, I'm not suggesting some conspiracy. That's just you filling in the blanks with whatever makes you feel better about my statement.

I have noticed a lot of Nintendo only lists.

1. Mario Kart 8 ; I have played the series since the very first one, and this turned out to be my absolute favourite.
2. Metal Gear Rising (PC) ; Slicing stuff never gets old in this game. Combined with Platinum's perfect action gameplay and Kojima's hilarious Codec conversations, this is one hell of a title.
3. TowerFall Ascension ; This came out of nowhere. To my surprise, it wasn't just a perfectly designed local 4 player competitive game, but also a fun 2 player co-op experience. Interestingly, it was also much easier to get friends to play this than Smash Bros. (which everyone around me seems to detest).
4. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze ; Perfectly executed platformer.
5. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 ; Yes, it has a few poor stealth sections, but they only make up a very small part of this otherwise very enjoyable action adventure. I still prefer LoS 1 because it's a much more epic journey, but fighting gameplay, graphic design and music are still top-notch in this one.
6. Bayonetta 2 ; One climax after the other, but it can get a little overwhelming.
7. Infamous: Second Son ; The first really mind-blowing next gen visuals in a game that unfortunately feels like a small step back compared to its predecessors (which I love).
8. Hyrule Warriors ; Loads of mindless fun and Zelda fan service.
9. Captain Toad ; What it lacks in difficulty, it makes up in charm and cuteness.
10. Hohokum ; Finding out what to do in each of the sections is half of the fun. Worth to play for its incredible and varied visual design alone.

Honorable Mentions
x. Ryu ga gotoku: Ishin ; These games are always a lot of fun, although they went overboard with the grinding elements in this one.
x. Alien: Isolation ; Intense atmosphere, but I have a feeling it works despite its gameplay rather than because of it.
x. Smash Bros. for Wii U ; I haven't played it yet as much as I'd like, but it is definitely a good party game and an immense love letter to Nintendo fans.

Yeah,that's pretty pathetic.

I can't believe a game with such horrid gameplay is gonna win GAF GOTY.

Then I remembered last year. Journey and The Walking Dead hahahaha

Those games were 2 years ago. Last year was the walking dead.

I actually think Smash is going to win.

1. GTA V ; And AGAIN, Rockstar Games delivered a masterpiece, a Game which no one can develop better Rockstar Games achieved unbelivable progression, and its for me the greatest Game I've ever played.
I've waited for this game since the revealing, every day, damn. GTA V is my masterpiece.

22416-dai.jpg

2. Dragon Age: Inquisition ; Never played bioware's games so intense as DAI, spent more than 65 hours, and I'm not done! big areas, wonderful graphics with tons of quests, thats how do you develop a RPG !

lastofusRbanner.jpg

3. The Last of Us: Remastered ; It was probably the most emotionally game I've ever played, there are only a few movies which can deliver the same quality and emotions, Naughty Dog created a masterpiece, and it was wonderful to enjoy in 1080p and 60 Frames.

21072-infamous.jpg

4. Infamous: Second Son ; I always loved the Infamous IP, and Sucker punch delivered exactly that what i wanted, a beautiful World, techniqually A and a great character, and it was the first game which offered us the photo-mode. Console was out for 4 months and they already delivered such a great game, really proud of SP.

21150-the-last-of-us.jpg

5. TLOU DLC - Left Behind ; the 90 minutes i spent in this game, no one could achieve the same quality as Naughty Dog, it was an emotionally adventure, I'll never forget this game and DLC.

22588-driveclub.jpg

6. Driveclub ; Apart from the big server issues at launch, Evo Studios delivered for me the best Racing Game, handling was like Rushy said perfect, intense, difficult to master but always fair.
and now when i see the weather effects, it makes a completely new game!

seasontwoWDbanner.jpg

7. The Walking Dead Season 2 Episodes 2-5 ; Amazing Characters, deep and emotionally story, great adventure of Clementine, thats how you produce a sequel !

destiny-hp-fb-og-share-img.jpg

8. Destiny ; It's never easy to start new IP's but Bungie done a great job, it was one of the best games to play it with your friends, beautiful locations and it keeps you motivated to collect the best weapons !

19328-wolf.jpg

9. The Wolf Among Us ; I always wanted to play as a wolf in a game, telltale developed an awesome fable adventure game, characters have been created perfect, Bigby is an absolutely animal.
I really liked this series, was an intense game, with a lot of decisions to make.

ms_bonkchoy-punch333.jpg

10. Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare ; I was jealous when they announced it first on Xbox, after i played it on PS4 i was really satisified, MP makes so much fun, especially with Friends, really lovely designed world and characters, I'd say its been underestimate.
Great game with an awesome MP.

Honorable Memories: Alien Isolation ; Great Horror game, especially for Alien fans !

No, the idea is that there's a greater initiative to vote Bayo2 for some silly reasons. As in, more of the fanbase mobilizing and voting simply because they want it to win.

The trend is there. There's no arguing that.

EDIT: To be fair, it does seem like there's this whole subsection of GAF that gets insulted by the very idea of a game like DAI winning over it. I'll leave it at that, though

Ha. Isn't that the whole point of voting for your favorite game?! If you like a game a lot, you vote for it to win. You're trying to accuse people of some sort of "fanbase initiative," but that's the entire point of this thread! Fans vote for their favorite game. Simple. It would be just as easy (and silly) to look at the same anecdotal "data" and say that it worked the other way around: that people started voting for DAI only when other people started voting for Bayo2. Silly.
