Letter from Bonnie Ross in regards to MCC (Halo 3 ODST SP free to MCC players)

I'm enjoying reading the responses about missing out because you have the game but haven't played.

The content is literally for those who played and "suffered" from launch till the announcement. You haven't played a single second, so you haven't "suffered" a single second, so no, you get nothing.

I'm quite happy that they chose Relic as the map, I've always liked relic. Though I kind of wish they made a map that could support Ricochet.

That's a fantastic anecdote, but my store did not. The store manager said they do not give refunds for opened games.

It's not really an anecdote, it's pretty common knowledge. I guarantee you I could get that particular manager to refund your money with minimal effort. The game hasn't been working for many people. That's a completely valid reason to get a refund and Wal-Mart of all places is the easiest chain to return items that don't work as intended.

Anyway, this is getting off topic. Do whatever you want, as it doesn't affect me either way.

Man ODST was so good. Can't wait to play that again.

Tbh they should also do Reach at some point. Make it paid DLC. It would suck to have one game never coming out at 1080p 60.

Damn, you're such an Internet badass and clearly I'm just a shitty customer who doesn't know how to talk to a store manager, even though my family has run a business my entire life and I know all about this stuff.

No one at that store budged and they wouldn't give me a refund. Should I fly you into my town and let me watch your wizbang ways of acquiring a refund that I clearly know nothing about?

Well, the game wasn't fucking free, I payed for it at launch. I didn't download the 15 GB update, and try to play online, because I knew the game was broken.

I understand there's really no other way to do this, but giving notification on the day the offer expires is lousy.

lol alright man.

Call their corporate office or write a letter.

But did you play? If you did, it's still on your account you'll get it.

Otherwise, how else would hey know? Who played it when?

The point is, it's for people who played it online. If you didn't, regardless of why, you didn't get the experience others did. Single player was pretty solid. The offer isn't for that.

Anyone who buys and plays for the first time now gets a much improved first experienced...not fixed, but much improved. 343i judge that the current first experience isn't anywhere near as bad or deserving of freebies.

Maybe they'll add day, maybe they won't. There dates and timing make sense though.

How about release a game that works you fucking piece of shit.

Better watch out before the 343i defense force accuses you of GAMER ENTITLEMENT because you expect a game you paid for to work. They're out in full force in this thread. It's like I'm on the Halo Waypoint forums here sometimes.

lol some are actually encouraging you to get a refund.

... why are there so many people here that bought MCC day one but didn't even try to play it once...? I'm so confused.

It's weird that people wouldn't even try it for themselves after reading it doesn't work properly online. I can understand not buying it before issues get resolved but buying it, installing it and then not even trying it even for a couple of mins is weird.

Not at all. First, a massive number of people already explained that souring the situation would be worse than just sitting it out and waiting for it to be fixed. I think that's a completely legitimate reason to not try it out until you know that its at least somewhat working for the majority and then putting it back into your library. Nothing at all weird about it. Second, rushing into almost assured frustration on a title that is, for the majority, a collectors/fans title, isn't the smartest thing for a fan to do. No for many they are not going to want to jump on that grenade.

I wish I had been given the choice:)

Lol, so it's UNREASONABLE and GAMER ENTITLEMENT now to want a game to be fixed 5 WEEKS after I gave them $65 for them to hand me a broken game? You're a riot, man.

Oh boy, I got an apology from an indirect, unpersonable press release from Bonnie Ross! Yay! Meanwhile, they got my $65 and vacation days from work I'll never get back for something that DOESN'T WORK.

Serious question: do you work for 343? Because you fucking sound like it.

What?

You took days off work to play a game? Well more fool you.

I'd understand taking the release day off for a new console or even new game. But for a remaster? Really? And why would you take days off?

You been bitching in this page for 12 pages now. They fixing the game and even working on xmas day to fix it. Like many have stated if you not happy then get a refund.

Its not unreasonable to want working games.

What is unreasonable is getting upset at getting free shit as an apology.

Because he was looking forward to it?

Regardless of how you feel about the whole situation, a lot of people did this in excitement for a game they were greatly anticipating. Who cares if it's a remaster? I can totally understand planning some free time to get it all in.

I think it's great 343 is still trying to fix this and the added compensation is a nice gesture. However, that doesn't take away the fact that the MCC never should've been launched in this condition in the first place.

More power to 343 for owning to the problem, though. Looking forward to playing through ODST again.

Apologies and free shit don't fix broken games. 343i has a track record for shitting on the fans of this series.

I'm mad I still can't play Halo CE Anniversary co-op online without horrendous input lag. That's on the XBox 360. Host is fine but guest is unplayable even if you're on a cat fucking 6 lan connection in the same goddamn house.

So a free game, free map, 1 month xbl, and some in game extras. That's cool, people here are complaining that it's "broken" but I have over 60 games played and while it's not working perfectly, it's definitely improved a lot since launch. Thanks 343.

I know, that's why I said I know there's not really any other way to do this (I haven't even put the disc in the console, by the way).

If they gave people a few days to get to their consoles, would that be so terrible? Are they afraid millions of people will go out and buy the game in that small window of time, just to get some free DLC?

They shouldn't have released the game in the state it was in, and trying to minimize their losses on this apology sucks as well.

The sad truth is I will buy it anyway, because ODST is fucking awesome:(

I think buying a game, and not playing a game and waiting out the fixes is "suffering" enough. Only reason i didn't play was worth to mouth. Why would you play something someonr warns you about?

I think it would have been a better solution to move the deadline by a day.

That said, if i don't get it i'll probably just buy ODST. It's just that awesome

Because the only thing you have to lose is like 5 mins of trying it out and it makes sense to see the state of the game for yourself.

That's pretty cool, I didn't think they would add a whole other game in.

Relic is a favourite too.

Just need the game to be fixed first

As far as apologies go, this is pretty damn good.

They shouldn't have released such a broken game, be it due to pressure from above or just insufficient QA, but I feel satisfied with the communication from 343i and the efforts they've put in to fixing the MCC.

I hope what Bonnie Ross said is true and that this has truly been "a humbling experience". They need to learn from this and ensure it never happens again. I still won't be pre-ordering Halo 5, they need to earn that trust back, but this is a good start.

So I bought MCC on launch day but after hearing that the multiplayer was busted I just installed it, redeemed my preorder code and tossed it into the backlog thinking I'd play something else until things were fixed. I'm screwed out of the freebies aren't I since I didn't want to play broken matchmaking? I loaded up a match tonight (it took FOREVER to find a match and the load times are terrible) but it was after midnight here.

and yeah I'll probably buy ODST anyway but it still sucks to miss out. ODST I think was my favorite single player Halo game.

try contacting xbox support, they'll probably understand.

I'm assuming they had already planned ODST as DLC for next year, so now they can announce this. I very much doubt they decided to start on ODST because of this.

Does that increase the likelihood of Reach too?

Oh, so now I'm getting attacked for taking vacation days from work to play a game I had been excited about for the whole year?

343 defense force is fucking unbelievable in this thread.

All this because I refuse to see how getting more content for a game that is still broken 5 weeks after release is supposed to make me forget about the problems the game still has. I'll bet my entire life's savings that this ODST/H2A DLC free thing will also be a gigantic botch at release.

You're posting on a dedicated gaming forum do you really think there aren't people on here (Me included) who take days off to play video games?

Great that ODST is coming, Relic isn't my favourite map but I always loved playing 1 flag CTF on it. I just hope they fix the multiplayer for Christmas I have some time off and I'd like to go back and play it without getting frustrated with the long matchmaking times and uneven teams.

Why not?

I did just that and was able to get a few matches in a couple of weeks ago. It didn't hurt to try.

Dude, the only thing you do is shout how much wrong has been done to you. I have read numerous posts over the span of weeks, and they are all basically the same ;)

Now we know it...

You just don't seem to grasp the concept of correcting your mistakes and putting effort into it, I see 343, working around the clock to fix it, with weekly updates and weekly blog posts, and communicating and listening to fans.

And now they crawl again through the dust, with this blog post.. and even giving us free stuff.

What more do you want?

I only attempted to play multiplayer once and couldn't connect. So I guess I'm ineligible for the compensation?

I bought these games primarily for the single player component which has been fantastic so I'm more than satisfied with this apology. Looking forward to playing ODST in 1080p/60fps.

The idea that someone would buy a game and never play it cause they read bad things about it on the internet is ridiculous to me. Don't you have a mind of your own? You spent your hard earned cash on a game and just because some random ppl on the internet told you its broken, you're never gonna try it for yourself? Not even to see if your experience is different in any way? So you can form your OWN OPINION.

Wow.

The game I paid $65 for to work. That's what I want. It's been 5 weeks. This shit is unacceptable. Throwing free crap at me that probably won't work properly either isn't going to budge me.

Yeah, everyone else in the world could be wrong.

It happens all the time.

Honestly, I don't think 343 is even attempting to satisfy a person like you. The game could be fixed 100% tomorrow and MS could give you five free games as compensation for the botched release and you would likely still complain that since it didn't work at launch, you're still angry. Nothing is going to make you happy, so again, just move on. Get a refund. If your retailer won't do so, e-mail their corporate office. Or call them. Or write a letter. You DESERVE a refund. The game has been a mess. I don't blame you at all for wanting your money back.

NO ONE is defending this game's insanely shitty launch, by the way. I know you've decided that's what is happening here but it's not. The MCC's broken release is an embarrassment and has honestly made me a little regretful of my XB1 purchase. That doesn't mean I can't appreciate the company's attempts to fix their mistakes.

I'm all for correcting mistakes but the problem here is the time its taking. There are a lot of issues (if we count campaign issues and dedis) that need fixing and if you have a small team correcting them then those corrections could take months at the rate we are going before we have a fully stable game. I haven't even touched the single player - I'd like to but the last time I tried halo 4 I got an untracked build error which I understand from the patch notes hasn't been corrected yet.

343 have a large team of developers, the game development process for halo 5 has taken priority and understandably if you remove developers from one team to fix bugs for a month in MCC you jeopardise halo 5 hitting next year since that's how tight the timeline is for them. So small team correcting MCC bugs could take a long while before its stable and that's of concern.

Unfortunately that's a 343/Microsoft issue and we should be black boxed from that. Okay the product released broken but is it beyond reasonable expectation that MCC should have a majority of fixes done in 5 weeks? We have had progress, certainly matchmaking is better however 1) its really laggy (especially in the uk) due to not having dedis that we were promised pre-launch, 2) no ranks mean people drop out of games like flies 3) people are still suffering from maps no loading where the white progress bar on the map screen never carries on moving (I get it in parties) and one person gets into the game and others drop out.

I'm happy with the recompense that 343 have stated they will provide, however I'm still worried that MCC multiplayer won't be working well into the new year. At least bring on dedicated servers as a minimum. That's why Mr Enigma has a right to be pissed still.

I'll caveat this by saying that halo 2-3 multiplayer is most favourite gaming experience in the last 20 years, I have lots of multiplayer halo games played (10's of thousands) and I just want MCC to work so that I can carry on playing it. I'm not anti 343 and hope that halo 5 proves to be a step up.
