DSFix 2.3 taken down after DMCA complaint [Up: Was mistake; being resolved]

Automated search trying to go after sites distributing the debug .exe and DSFix got flagged by accident?

I mean, I'm trying best case scenario for Namco here, otherwise they just look like complete fucking dicks.
Let's hope so.

I seriously cannot imagine any other reason which is remotely sane.

I mean, even by corporate publisher standards of sanity.

Edit: Holy fuck at that Vitafit post.

Not only is this claim bullshit, it's also completely nonsensical.

Also, the idea of automated DMCA notifications just seems really bizarre to me. Weird world we're living in.

Looks like they needed some sort of bad PR to overshadow the DX11 "upgrade" DS2 version they're releasing in April and likely charging full price for.

DS fix is literally the reason why I even have this port in my library. If they were going to pull this crap, should have did it on day 1, not some years later and after thousands of sales made of an sub par port.

Yeah, this seems too bizarre to be malicious. Why would a corporate publisher actively try to take down something which makes their product more attractive and gives it better market presence, which they don't pay to support, and which they have no legal grounds for even being able to take down?

It has to be a mistake.

Until the day they make false DMCA claims have consequences, companies will just randomly machine gun them.

It fixed everything shitty. Allowed 60fps and >720p for starters.

Dark Souls II already supported 60 FPS and arbitrary resolution on PC.

GeDoSato is the generic downsampling tool released alongside DSII that added supersampling, higher quality/alternative AA, AO, and DoF, color correction, etc. I'm not actually sure if the original DSFix works with Dark Souls II at all.

Well we can only hope the A-Team of From Software continues to make high quality Exclusives for the PS4 from now on and the B-Team does their thing for Multiplat.
So at least the biggest part of the community can enjoy good games.

To be honest - I wouldn't put much effort into it either.
How many people buy the game for full price?Probably a lot less who buy it for 5$ on Steam Sales.
Buy 2 Million Units for full price on release day and then you probably gonna get a well optimized PC Version full of love or at least patches/fixes.

Hope for Durante they are just making an Error.
Otherwise stuff like that isn't helping him to put effort into future projects and without him 9/10 PC Games aren't working properly.

I'm sorry, what the hell am I reading?

There are consequences, they're just not very strong. You can sue for damages, but you really only get economic damages. Basically, you'd get any money you lost because there was a false claim made against you. Which is virtually nothing in this case (and many others, I'm sure).

No, Dark Souls 2 did not need any fix to unlock resolution or framerate

I haven't bought DS2 for PC yet, still waiting for it to get cheaper. But DS2 is locked to 30fps/720p!!!!!?????

edit: read post below, phew, Bamco can't be that incompetent.....

I was answering for Dark Souls, not DkSII. Sorry. I should've made that a bit clearer.

lol

what a dumb comment. how much do you want to bet, ds2 sold better on PC than it did on consoles? juniors

For those who missed it, while things tick over with DMCA and Bandai Namco - DSFix 2.3.1 is now available for all your broken Dark Souls needs - http://blog.metaclassofnil.com/?p=655

Downloaded! Let's see you delete this from my hard drive, Namco.

Really? Don't do that shit. Someone being new isn't something to criticize.

Can someone explain the debug version and the implications of it? Because I have no idea what anyone is talking about with this. Obviously, I don't have DS1 on PC :/

That's up there as the most stupid thing a PC video game publisher could do. Way to kill every hard earned goodwill you may have and at the expense of the single person responsible for a lion share of your success in this platform. So their next step will be to consider any player using dsfix a pirate?

Wow the fix is the only reason to buy the game on pc, I don't want a broken game. Are the planning a definitive version of this or some shit like that?

You know, I'm really happy I have an automated filtering + manual approval policy for comments on my blog.

I understand that people get upset, but the amount of threatening/violent/racist comments directed towards Bamco posted over the past half hour or so is pretty sobering to say the least.

They're technically right, but this is fucked.

No they're not. DSFix doesn't contain any copyrighted content, it just modifies the behavior of DirectX in a way that happens to be tailored to Dark Souls. It's generic enough that people got it working with several other games in the days before GeDoSaTo.

I'm 13.7 hours into Dark Souls thanks to Durante's DSFix 2.3 and that great person who fixed the framerate issue right after the steam update. I literally couldn't get over 15FPS no matter what resolution or graphics options I chose with the normal and broken release (you'd think the game would have been patched to perfection years after release).

Namco can spend the rest of their days in a room with an infinite health Capra Demon if they did this knowing how significant Durante's work has been for the Souls series on PC.

I still have no idea how that kind of behaviour manages to occur in these instances. I'm torn between thinking that either the internet is filled with 9 year old children, or it's just that people lose all moral integrity when they have the anonymity of the internet.

Edit: I should probably say something on topic. Hopefully whoever made the mistake will wise up soon. I knew this DMCA stuff was bad news when they talked about it in 5th grade.

I have contacts in Bamco, but considering what a big (+international) entity it is, I'm not too sure if my contacts themselves would even know what happened.

Will see what I can find out sniffing around.

I got to give it to you junior you almost had me with your bait.

Anyways, the only reason I bought DS1 was being of the fix. This shit is ridiculous, hopefully it is some sort of mistake.

I still won't forgive Durante for not fixing Metal Gear Revengeance.

Enough people bought their shitty port that they decided to make a decent port for DS2, so they made enough money to not have an excuse to be lazy assholes and fix their shit.

Hell, they recently patched the game and didn't fix it.

If it helps, here's what people in this thread have pieced together: Bamco Europe seem to have hired File Defense Service FDS to take down files related to a debug version that leaked alongside the GFWL removal patch. To do this, FDS used an automated tool that identified DSFix as infringing content when it really wasn't.

I know you're probably kidding about the last part, but Durante's a busy guy and he has to pick his battles. MGR wasn't really broken compared to some of the other games he's put work into.

So hopefully this should be resolved. I'd be surprised if Bamco were so oblivious that they don't realize the impact DSFix had on their sales.

Wait... what? I bought Dark Souls because of your fix Durante.
This is baffling.

Yeah, I actually read through the entire thread (ouch :E)

Thanks though! Good summary.

The hurdle is that these are people from Bamco Japan (and audio/music people at that), so explaining what's going on in the PC world, what DSFix is, why it was amazing, etc will take time, not to mention timezones.

Dumb comment, yes, but you honestly believe that it sold better on PC than both 360 and PS3 combined?

Anyway, there's no numbers to back any of this up so it's a pretty stupid bet.
