They were, but back then the writers were a thousand times better and effort was put into making the references a part of the episode, and not just some easy, worthless gag.

Off the top of my head, there's the Malibu Stacey episode, the one where Marge tries to cancel Itchy and Scratchy and the Be Sharps episode.

Nowadays, we just get shite like 'Mapple' or 'ZiiU'.

These days, modern Simpsons horribly dates itself. It doesn't help when it tries to parody recent movies with scripts that were written when the movie came out, but animated two years later. Looking at you D'oh-cial Network.

Not to mention immediately dating themselves with this. Who even remembers this, and in 4 years who is going to get it?
