Majora's Mask 3DS announced!

Have you guys seen the Japanese footage? It's Twinmold that got a redesign of fight.

Got a link for it? The NA version showed of Odalwa and Gyorg's new designs with the Majora eye.

I mean if it was just for that it'd be similar to the Scarecrow except instead of sending you 6 (or was it 12?) hours ahead it's to a specific time. Nobody got mad at the Scarecrow sending you several hours ahead or the Grandmother sending you a full 12 hours or day ahead.

Well you could do that (12h) with the Song of Double Time already, but what I mean is if you're jumping to specific points in time, you're cutting out downtime. But iike I said, it's not some terrible change.

Right, yeah. If it's only forward in time allowed, then it's fine. But if it's also backwards then that's not... cool. :/

They say in the gameplay video you have to play the Song of Time to go back before the end of the third day or else it is game over, but you lose your items etc. If you could just go to a statue and move backwards in time there would be no point to that, so I'm pretty sure you can't do that.

Oh thank goodness they have that limitation then. You never know with Nintendo sometimes...

I hate to be one of those people who says "don't use the mechanic if you don't like it," but don't use the time savings if you don't like them.

They are not forced upon you and add only options to minimize on downtime, which is a great thing for a handheld experience.

Having a numerical timer, ticking down the minutes (or real world seconds) is great. Really makes it more tense while also adding some precision to planning out events. I kinda miss the ornate and interesting looking timer in the original but screen space is at a premium on the 3DS screen.

Moving the bank to the back of the tower, right infront of the Owl statue is also smart, especially since there are still transitions between each part of Clocktown.

I wonder if that part in the Twinmold fight is just a finisher or something to make it faster. There was a lot of waiting in that fight. Looks like all the bosses have the Majora eye as a weakpoint.

What was said during the saving part? I didn't quite understand what was going on for that and the Bomber's notebook part.

I think if today has proven anything, it's yes. yes they can be that stupid.

but hey the original was just tedious and frustrating, right? thanks for "fixing" everything, Nintendo.

Are we really complaining about not being forced to equip the bunny hood and run to granny or a scarecrow whenever we want to skip forward in time and no longer being tethered to owl statues?

Just play it without those amenities if they're crucial to the experience for you.

I believe Anth0ny wrote that under the assumption that the move to any time meant moving back any time as well, which would be terrible.

But moving to a specific time in the future does take away a bit. I don't think that moving forward to hard 12 hour midpoints was a pure design decision, so moving in even smaller increments is hardly fundamentally flawed but I do think it added to the experience. The best comparison I can think of is fast travel in open world games. Not quite the same since this isn't a case of the design being compromised under the assumption people will just fast travel but part of the game is that downtime where you happen to notice that the Postman paths through at a specific point while you're waiting for something else.

Not a chance.

I wouldn't be that sure:
Take a look around the world with the Nintendo 3DS system’s motion controls. You can also use the Nintendo 3DS Circle Pad Pro (sold separately) on Nintendo 3DS or the New Nintendo 3DS system’s C Stick to adjust your view!

Straight from the offical website.

Wait, are you saying they took out first-person view? Where are you getting that idea?

There's no icon on the touch screen. I guess the first person view has been replaced by the Picto Box, which does have an icon.

By the way, also from the official website:
But be warned: returning to the dawn of the first day no longer automatically saves your progress.

I think this is far from optional.

I have to admit, watching the 6 minute JP trailer, this is probably the best looking game I've ever seen on the 3DS.

Still holding up hope for a hard/original mode that keeps the original save system. If you REALLY can travel back in time? Wow.

Makes sense to me. The original was the most disappointing fight in the game. Without the Giant's Mask it's long and frustrating, and with the mask you just hack and slash for a little bit. Boring.

It also had horrendous framerate, dipping even lower than 20 FPS -- even if you weren't using the Giant's Mask.

Uh no, youre wrong....

...majoras mask on the N64 ran at 20fps max NTSC, and 17fps max PAL. The twinmold fight dipped to around 7 or 8fps.

I think it's amazing that they are going out of their way to make that fight amazing, or someone was fooling around and someone came up to it and said "Let's use it."

I'm not crazy about the new Eye redesign in every boss to show off their new weakspot, it sort of takes away the feel of all these bosses in some way. Especially the first boss! I'm going to cringe when I see the 2nd dungeons Clockwork Horse boss have an eye on it. HOW CAN A EYE EVEN FIT ONTO CLOCKWORK METAL? Unless he is the only boss that doesn't have some weird eye on it.....

But it looks like Nintendo is pulling a Pokemon game remake on this game even more so then on Ocarina of Time. I'm interested to know if a Twilight Princess 3DS version is inevitable or out of the question, but I feel satisfied with Majora's Mask 3D.

Advance press copies are out.

Waiting for a confirmation of what firmware it requires. Absolutely not willing to upgrade past 9.2 until the Gateway firmware update hits.

But, but... It's Majora Mask, and before the launch date no less.

I'm dying here. I know people that have it, but no extra codes, can't beg for it.

Was Majora's Mask ever that difficult? I played it a decent amount as a kid, but never got all that far.

Does the time limit/control aspect make things more challenging, since you can essentially fail?

You can always try again. And it's not a time limit, so much as a "structure." What I mean is, you can relive those three days an infinite number of times. And you can reset them at any time. And you can slow them down so they last twice as long each cycle, giving you two real-life hours to accomplish something, whether it's activating a warp point, or acquiring a new item, or learning a new song. All of that is retained when you reset time.

So it really just comes down to choosing what you want to accomplish each cycle. When I played, I'd explore a new area until I reached the warp point at the entrance to the next dungeon. Then I would reset time. Now back at Day One, I'd slow down time, and warp to the entrance of the dungeon I found last time. I would then have a full two hours in real life to complete that dungeon. And time stops passing when you pause the game or talk to someone, so there's really no pressure.

If two hours isn't enough to beat the dungeon, it's probably enough time to reach the dungeon item. And that item is kept when you go back in time. So if you have to reattempt the dungeon, the dungeon item will let you bypass the first half. Meaning you now have two real-life hours to do the -second half- of the dungeon.

In other words, there's plenty of time, and no real fail state. A lot of the "pressure" in this game is imagined by people who don't quite understand how it works. But I'm confident that if someone keeps at it, they'll learn the system quickly enough. :)

Hmm.
Shame that nintendo typically puts big barriers on what they're allowed to talk about. I doubt a confirmation of any changes involved in a master quest mode is something they'd let a random journalist announce early.
