EA: Star Wars: Battlefront will recieve a Battlefield-sized marketing push

I always thought Battlefront was extremely mediocre, can't wait to see what DICE does, because I love them & Star Wars.

I wouldn't rule those things out. Tightened up, that gameplay can stand up well against, and perhaps above, the gameplay that has been proliferating the past generation and into this one.

They [consumers] buy what is fun, heavily marketed to them, and what all their friends are playing. Even being Star Wars, its sales may not reach Call of Duty, but that's not the goal and shouldn't be. But it can see similar aspects of success in that direction if it's treated to the above, and I can guarantee it will.

So, what wasn't FPS about Republic Commando? Don't think the game ever took the players out of that perspective, and the squad commands iirc didn't affect the game in a way that wouldn't detract it from the FPS genre.

Edit: Never thought I'd see the day a tactical FPS be less of an FPS than COD.

Tbh I agree with you, but this is EA were talking about here. I'm just saying what I believe is likely with them, I LOVE Battlefront and I'd be fine with it being closer to the older games. I think that's an unrealistic expectation.

Just to be clear, I absolutely love Republic Commando and I would murder a sequel. I just consider it an FPS sub-genre personally.

Sure, but those same people wouldn't give a damn about that terribleness you're advocating. The only people who care enough to find out about it see it as poison and would kill chances of them buying it. This is even ignoring the fact that even the audience you are describing wants that stuff anyways, and that nostalgia for Battlefront is enough to drive sales for this game.

And did you even play Republic Commando? It was more FPS than a lot of what gets classified as FPS today, and it wasn't slow at all nor was it tactical. The squad commands were a tiny part of the game.

Dude read my post before getting up in arms, I am not advocating anything. And assuming someone hasn't played a game just because they disagree with you is pretty petty, I even described it as tactical-light so clearly we agree to a small extent. It certainly was a slower paced game, as it usually involved light corridor traversal before opening up into a large area where you had to set your defences/attack up, I consider that slower than your average FPS.

I feel like that view might draw heat, but I can't argue with it. I really enjoyed the games, but reading some impressions here it makes it seem like I either missed some major aspect of the gameplay (doubtful given both console games on Xbox hardly left my console for months after they released) or there's some major overselling to combat the bloated design of the modern FPS genre.

I think that, provided they nail trans-atmosphere combat and [more importantly] functionality on a technical level, it'll be a really good game that Star Wars fans have been in want of for a long time.

Whatever shooter style they go with, I think if they nail the vehicle combat it will go a long way for both crowds. The old controls felt a bit floaty to me (probably due to the smaller maps for the time), hopefully they can tighten them up a bit and make them the most fun part of the game.

This should be everything. Really fucking solid BF4 with Star Wars paint with lots of modes and HEROES. Give me this!

also re: 3rd/1st person - I want it to work like MGSV but with options to use only one or the other OR a mix and all three are just as accurate/balanced. That would be my biggest wish but I don't mind if they focus on 1st person.

Probably. The main game will tie in with the new movie. I would buy the shit out of a "Empire Strikes Back DLC mappack" :(

If you think about it, it makes silly sense.

Game comes with Episode 7.

Then EA starts releasing "episodic" DLC.

Episode 1.
Episode 2.
Episode 3.
Episode 4.
Episode 5.
Episode 6.

Milk it to oblivion.

I'll likely get it just because it's Star Wars.
If it has a single player campaign I'll definitely get it.
If not I'll try the EA Access version first, see how I get on.

I thought we had people here to prevent such posts for being made. Someone grab a bag!

As much sense as it does make, I think we're safe in that regard. Could see a lot of minor skirmish, relatively passive locations (Kamino, Bespin, Mustafar, Coruscant) being DLC content, which is fine as long as it's reasonably priced.

I wonder if there will be 'levelution'/environment specific stuff going on. Sarlacc pits and/or dust storms on Tatooine for instance.

Hopefully it will not recieve a Battlefield4-sized launch & bugs.

Yeah, that would suck. But I get a 'this will never happen again' vibe from DICE after the whole BF4 thing, and hopefully they get their testing process down with Hardline as well.

I think it will be based on the Original Trilogy, and just create maps from that. I think it will have one or two maps from Ep. VII, followed by an Ep VII expansion.

Space battles are confirmed?

Not as far as I am aware. A lot of the details are up in the air, we would probably know more but I doubt they want to steal Hardline's thunder.

I expect this will come with a hellacious amount of DLC/pre-order/microtransaction bullshit.

Star Wars is too much of a cash-cow for them to be anything but massively exploitative of the fan-base.
I'm expecting the original trilogy content to be locked behind a BATTLEFRONT PREMIUM pass, pre-order requirements for the Bounty Hunter class and a million retailer-exclusive/microtransaction purchases for cosmetic stuff like claymore lightsabers, character skins and the like.

It will aslo release with a stupid amount of bugs because it must be released with the movie, rather than when it's actually in a fit state.

I really hope it'll be good, but I fully expect it to suffer all the negatives of a movie tie-in game and all the negatives of a Star Wars game (i.e. put "Star Wars" on the box and you can automatically sell a million copies of any old shit to the devoted fans).

The only optimism I have is that EA/Dice will want to avoid negative feedback after getting so much shit over BF4's broken release.

How much power does Disney have in terms of how this game is designed?

I would think they have some control whether its a microtransaction-fest or not.

If consumers dont like those practices, it could damage the image of the brand

Geniune question though

It just saddens me that we likely won't ever get PS2 era Battlefront--where there was a bajillion maps(on disc, not dlc) and various custom options for game modes. I miss those days.

This will easily sell in millions even if it turns about to be shit. Star Wars is fucking huge and EA knows that.

If it plays the same way as Battlefield 3 and 4 I'll give it a wide berth. The over the top movement speed and low time to kill is something I can't deal with anymore in shooters. Don't get me wrong I played a ton of instagib UT but that was when I was in high school. I like my shooters a bit slower paced these days. Personally I think a slower paced, higher time to kill fits the Star Wars universe better anyway.

I really can't see the TTK being like Battlefield. I'd expect it to be pretty similar to the first two.

God I hope this game turns out good. I know it's a Battlefront game, but what I am really hoping it for is Jedi Knight 4 with the all out combat aspects of Battlefield. I desperately need that game. I just hope they don't mess up the lightsaber combat... and by mess up I mean have anything other then Jedi Outcast style.

It being FPS only would not bother me at all (on the contrary, having 3rd person view would bother me) but i'm more worried about it having ADS. And Sprinting. And just about every fucking thing from modern shooters.
We don't need any more of that crap. Star Wars especially doesn't need that crap.

You have an issue with Aiming down the sights and sprinting? Those are like the two best features of modern FPS gaming

I remember they said it's not going to be Battlefront 3, but rather their own take on it. That doesn't give me much hope that it's even going to be close to what the previous games were. That suggests to me that they are going to change the important things that made the games Battlefront, rather than just a Star Wars battlefield game.

Well that saves me $60 then. No local multiplayer, no buy.

please don't squish my dreams and hopes....pleasee

so this game is supposed to release this year right? and we have seen hardly anything of it except tech demo or something. sounds legit
It's EA's big game for FY16. It could technically release by March next year but they need this as their major software release for the holidays, and they're not going to miss capitalizing on the Episode 7 film.

They must be changing quite a few things if they don't consider it Battlefront 3. I'm expecting it to be nothing at all like the previous games, considering the 'requirements' for it to count as a a Battlefront game aren't exactly complicated.

DICE historically doesn't start really unveiling/talking about their major products until GDC of the year it releases.

It actually does sound legit though, especially when we have games like Forza Horizon 2 or LittleBigPlanet 3 that release 5-6 months after they are revealed. Battlefront was announced in 2013, I don't see the issue lol.

Well, that's what I understood from the first post in this thread.

edit: read the gamespot article; its still pretty much up in the air. But from a marketing standpoint it would make sense that a (big) part of in relates to the new movie.

I want this game to be great, but part of me is just waiting for the other shoe to drop and EA to screw something up.

Watch the online be fucked for awhile, level up based loadouts being a thing.... Ugh... I need to stop thinking about this game....

So this a multiplayer-focused game like COD and BF? I honestly never played a Battlefront game, for some reason.

The old Battlefront games were single player and multiplayer. You could play single player through the story via playing against the AI on the maps, or coop with your friends.

I'm imagining the same with this game, if they hold true to its roots.

Right, I'm sure it will have both, but is it MP-focused like COD and BF are? I'm looking for another great online shooter to get into.
