Sprites that look like things they're not supposed to

The Black Omen is a Star Destroyer and not some sort of weird-ass flying tower.

And then I thought I saw everything in previous similar threads. Here I am, stunned.

I'm not seeing this one. I even covered the other side of his face with my thumb and I still can't see how you thought that...

Part of the process of the brain's cognition of something is the disregarding, to the point of near-invisibility, the data that it does see as relevant to what it's already decided is "right"

You're still ignoring over half the sprite, though.

Even with that GIF posted earlier, I still can't see it at all.

Can anyone explain what this is supposed to actually be? I mean, at best it looks like a trainer is down on his knees and yanking the guy's shorts down if not in the middle of already... servicing him.
The left announcer looks like he's giving us the finger and the one on the right looks like he's holding both his hands under his chin, pouting.
Actually, I think the trainer is giving advices to the boxeur on some specific punch, that's why the trainer is moving and the boxeur is nodding.
Still hard to think that way tho

Yeah I don't understand it at all either, and when people started posting and were actually agreeing I was dumbfounded. The only way I kind of see it is that gif that removes over half the sprite, but I feel like as soon as you'd try to make sense of the right side of the sprite, you'd instantly realize the other eye, ear, and tusk.

(Link's death sprite from the GBC Zeldas)
That sprite confused me for years. I thought Link got a bowler hat and sat down all depressed with his arms in front.
I still don't know what it's supposed to represent.

Played all of them but never saw this sprite.........................

This one is messing with me. I CAN cover the right side of the sprite and see the face you and others have seen. But as soon as you uncover the rest of the sprite the illusion is lost. What did you interpret the rest of the sprite as?

Most things I get. Even the ones that make no logical sense like crouching Mario turning into a bird. But this one seems impossible to view incorrectly unless you are ignoring 60% of the visual information on screen.

I also saw that peon face portrait completely wrong for the longest time. Keep in mind that when playing Warcraft 2 originally, it was on a low resolution screen where the image wasn't blown up to the size where you can see all of the pixels like that. The left eye just disappears into the rest of the image, and your brain starts reinterpreting the image based on it having only one visible eye. The right yellow tusk looked like a smirking mouth to me as a kid. After looking at the portrait properly, I can clearly see what it is supposed to be, though.

I think the illusion would be easier to see if the image was smaller though.

I know Square has always been big into SW references (anyone that plays FF12 without realizing how much of a boner they had for SW regarding the plot and character archetypes needs a refresher course, besides other references throughout the series) but it's crazy to keep finding more as time goes on (I personally never knew Black Omen = Star Destroyer before).

For a while I thought the eyes were the red part, not the white on the side. The OG sprite didn't help, IMO.

I was super disappointed when I figured this out. The intended look is so goofy.

Also, the Gen 1 and 2 sprites for Metapod always threw me off. It only became clear later on when they changed position on the sprite.

I'm pretty sure that's Jesus riding a horse.

I see an unused Star Wars poster. Helmets from left to right: An Imperial Scout Trooper, a tiny Boba Fett (you can even see the rocket on his back) and a Death Star Gunner that's turned in the opposite direction for some reason.

The bottom of the image shows a tiny Millennium Falcon flying next to Cloud City.

What is the real reason for this?

Most likely had to do with the rabbit Link color palette. They had to make the rabbit a color that would stand out and wasn't being used (pink) and because of sprite limitations, it made Link's hair pink as well since it was originally the same color as the rabbit (yellow).

Can't remember where I read that at.

That and Gestahl not being a dog-creature are facts for the mindblowing facts thread.

This seems like a very poor rationalization. This sort of thing wouldn't have had to be a problem on the NES, much less the SNES. Especially when the rabbit is such a small part of the game, it's not worth sacrificing your hero's hair color for a little 15 minute jaunt.

Yeah, that's how powerful it is. It's not a conscious ignorance, it just gets cognitively discounted.

It's the same thing with your perception. You've seen the way it's actually supposed to be, and your brain is having a hard time seeing an alternative.

The most convincing theory I've heard is that it was just a design decision to make Link "pop" more on the screen.

You should also consider that at this time it was quite popular to very loosely interpret hair color on characters in Japanese media. I've seen blonde characters depicted with green hair, and of course Mega Man with his helmet on has been shown as either black, dark blue, or brown over the years.

I can't believe this hasn't been posted.

Yeah, I clicked this thread to post this.

It took over a decade or so before I actually saw a plausible explanation for what is going on here. The trainer is pulling the fighter's belt away from his stomach to let him breathe more deeply/ easier. Those belt are padded and put on tight to protect the fighter from borderline low blows, so I'm guessing it makes it harder to inhale. You can see the trainer do it here briefly between rounds:
